I've always liked Sharp Microwaves!

I don't normally write reviews, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up in hopes that you'll have a different experience than I did. The Sharp microwave R-309YW that is shown on this website is an older model, so it might not be what you actually receive. I did a search online before deciding which microwave to buy. I've always owned sharp microwaves, and after reading the reviews I decided to buy this one. I needed it quickly so I didn't order it online and went directly to Best Buy instead. They have a lot of microwaves on display, including the one you see in the picture online. I was able to quickly point it out to the salesperson and make the purchase. All was good until I took it out of the box and set it up. It's not the same as the one on display at the store, or the one shown here online. Sharp has changed the features, but kept the model number the same! If you want to see what the newer version is like I'd suggest going to the Sharp website. On the newer version you can no longer just press the number keys and then start. They are now designated as express keys. If you want to use them as number keys you have to press the power button first. Unfortunately the power button is small and not easy to notice right away. The number buttons are also smaller. I'm not sure what else has changed between these two versions of this microwave. I actually wanted the convenience of just being able to press the number buttons, so I was quite disappointed! If I want 15 seconds, I want to press 1, 5, and start. Not find the small power button first. Maybe this wouldn't matter to you. This newer model is very attractive in white. I like the looks a lot! Other things I've noticed so far: The light is only on while cooking, not with the door open; There are three beeps when the cooking is done. These happen all at once. There's no way to stop that from happening, even if you open the door. Early in the morning I'm trying to be quiet, so I don't really like that feature; The feet on the microwave are not rubber, so it does slide around a little. This might be common these days, since the microwaves are not as heavy as they used to be. They also marked up my countertop when I first pushed it into place, but easily cleaned up with a sponge. I hope this review helped. I would certainly recommend this microwave to a friend IF they hadn't changed the numbers layout. But if that's not important to you then you might like this microwave. I'd be happy to respond to any additional questions you might have.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I did contact Sharp, but no response so far!
November 10, 2015
I have contacted Sharp twice, but haven't gotten a response. The first time was to let them know that the online description of this microwave, model R309y, is not the same as what is at the store now....which is the newer version with the same model number.
The second time I contacted them with a problem I was having with timed defrost. There is no auto setting for frozen chicken broth, so I used the timed defrost instead. I didn't know how much time it would need. There are no suggestions in the manual, so I was guessing. I started with 2 minutes, but it was still frozen solid. then I tried 5 minutes, and still nothing. I switched to auto meat setting for one pound. It doesn't have a way to make it less than one pound as far as I can tell. The auto time showed 81/2 minutes. Which seems excessive, so half way through I stopped it and the chicken broth was defrosting. I don't know if there's something wrong with the microwave's Timed Defrost, or if I'm doing something wrong. I followed the directions in the manual. it would have been very helpful had the manual offered suggestions on how much time different foods might take. The Auto Defrost is only for meat, poultry, and fish.

Sharp contacted me today!
November 10, 2015
Sharp did end up contacting me via email, and gave me a number to call. I called them and told them about the timed defrost issue, and they said they would send me a new microwave. I will keep you updated on how it goes. Haven't figured out how to edit my above post, or give updates, other than commenting on my own post.
