Much better options available

Sound quality is mediocre at best. Better than TV speakers but $100 sound bars perform better. It's loud enough, but no definition and dialog lacks clarity. Utility as a shelf is nice, but sitting on my couch I can see the underside of the shelf and it is rather unattractive, like they didn't finish it. I'll keep it since it's already on the wall, but I would not buy again.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
