GeekGuysWife's Reviews

When it comes to rediscovering dated electronics or old children’s toys, having the power cord can mean the difference between a fun-filled afternoon or hours spent searching for a cable you last saw years ago. Save yourself the headache and the fuss with this Insignia Universal AC Adapter, designed for devices requiring a round-pin connector (not for use with laptops). A total of seven interchangeable tips let you switch between multiple electronics or find the one that’s perfect for the job at hand. Its adjustable voltage gives you the flexibility to choose the precise voltage you need, while an included USB port lets you power devices such as phone chargers. Take back your afternoon with this multi-voltage power adapter.

Polarity Matters
on June 15, 2015

I've done a ton of research on this adapter and I am not going to purchase it. However, I thought it might be helpful to explain my findings for all of those who are wondering if this will work for you. Buried in other reviews is a mention that this cannot be used on devices with negative polarity. I have an old portable CD player and 2 portable cassette players (yes, I'm old), and one of the cassette players requires negative polarity. You can easily recognize this by looking at the symbol near the DC power input of your device. It's that barbell looking thing with a + and - on opposite ends. If the center "c" shape opens to the +, it's positive polarity. If the center "c" shape opens to the -, it's negative polarity. I found this text in the user guide (online .pdf) to confirm that this won't work for my cassette player with negative polarity:
Compatibility
Your device is compatible with this adapter if:
• The correct tip is available
• Your device’s voltage is between 3 and 12V DC
• Your device’s input does not require more than
1300mA (1.3A) of current (or 2100mA (2.1A) for 5V
connection).
• Your device has a positive polarity
My devices don't actually claim the necessary current, but if the voltage is right (3-12V in increments of 1.5V), the unit will draw the necessary current, but only up to the ratings shown. If your device requires more than 1300 milliAmps (except for the 5V exception), then this adapter will not work for you.
I'm giving it 5 stars and recommending it because it probably works just fine for exactly the right devices. I just don't want to pay that much for an adapter which can't charge ALL my old electronics. I've seen AC adapters in the past which can change polarity, so I'll keep looking.

I would recommend this to a friend!
