Excellent performance, tricky "smart" features
on August 29, 2022
Posted by: Mike
This Frigidaire portable air conditioner is an excellent value for the level of performance it brings! The unit comes securely packaged in sturdy foam, with the unpacking instructions on top of the unit itself, not stuffed into the box somewhere. This makes it incredibly easy to find the unboxing and setup instructions, instead of digging for them amongst the foam, cardboard, and plastic inside the box. The guide walks your through the steps needed to get your new portable air conditioner setup and running in a traditional mode first, then instructs you to download the Frigidaire app, complete with a picture of the app logo to avoid confusion with the other Frigidaire apps in the marketplace. The traditional mode is very easy to operate, buttons on top of the unit are easy to understand and offer full functionality of the unit with a clear LED display, the remote is easy to read and offers the same functionality as the buttons on the unit but also will "update" the unit if you make changes that weren't registered via the IR commands prior. The cooling performance is very nice, keeping our second floor nice and cool, or at least closer to the first floor, and it is quieter than many of the competitors we had tried! The app is really the only downside I've experienced, with getting the unit to recognize the Wi-Fi network being the most challenging part. The app is not a critical part of the unit, but it is very nice once you're able to get it working, especially to remotely operate the unit when returning home from a vacation or trip!
The multiple day excursion of trying to get the Frigidaire app and the portable AC unit working together is the only reason I am rating this 4/5, everything else is wonderfully easy to use and I'd still recommend it to my friends!

Extremely smart, when you want it to be!

The Ninja Foodi Smart XL Indoor Grill is truly one smart appliance! The first impressions out of the box are excellent, with plenty of cookware pieces and accessories. Turning on the indoor grill is easy and operating it in "manual mode" is straightforward. Ninja makes this device very easy to operate if you don't wish to read the manual (I did not the first time through), but I would definitely recommend giving it a once over. The "smart" modes are really only unlocked after knowing how to correctly setup the features you may want to use, the best of which is using the smart thermometer to be able to prepare your dish, select it, and the Foodi does the rest! The Foodi grill will monitor your food until it reaches the correct temperature and then shut off the heat, leaving your meal at the perfect temperature! As a smokeless grill, this is truly smokeless! Cleaning afterward is also a breeze! After experiencing all that this smokeless grill has to offer, you'll find it challenging to use anything else to cook with! Highly recommend!

Basic bootup speeds won’t cut it — not at work, on the go, or in the game. But the Crucial P3 SSD is anything but basic. With NVMe performance that’s more than 6x faster than SATA2 and storage capacities up to 4TB3, the P3 leaves older storage technology in the dust. Get faster bootups, downloads and file transfers, and store all your files, photos, videos, apps, and games with room to spare with the quality and dependability you expect from Crucial.

Amazing value!

The Crucial P3 SSD is one of the best values you can find in an SSD today, especially at higher capacities! The box shows exactly what is inside, the drive is well protected, and the installation is very easy and straightforward! The actual ease of installation will depend on a few factors, namely what the device is that you are upgrading and how familiar you are with opening computers or consoles. The process is pretty easy and can be readily found through a Google search, YouTube video, or through Crucial's own website! The drive is still a PCIe Gen 3 SSD, but the speeds are still very good! The actual difference between this drive and my Gen 4 SSDs is negligible at best, especially once you have loaded a game or program and leaps and bounds over SATA SSDs and a massive improvement over a traditional hard drive! The biggest benefit this drive delivers is sheer storage size and price. This would make an excellent games drive and main storage drive for a desktop computer or laptop that has two M.2 NVMe slots!

Great performance, expandable, weird case
on August 14, 2022
Posted by: Mike
The Acer Predator Orion 5000 packs a lot of performance into a fairly unnecessarily large case. The selection of components is extremely well balanced with no real bottlenecks between CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage with very decent airflow for a prebuilt case. Acer's decision to add a lot of plastic molding to the metal case is an odd one at best, but it doesn't hurt the performance and its not as aesthetically "gamer" as many other computer manufacturers choose to do for their gaming desktops. The RGB lighting is addressable and well oriented, but the motherboard LEDs are a very strange implementation, especially given the relatively low cost for a manufacturer to incorporate RGB LEDs into RAM sticks, GPUs, or even just a cleaner implementation of flat LEDs on the motherboard. They honestly look like someone glued a bunch of random LEDs around the board instead of thoughtfully using RAM with a heat spreader that has lighting built in or LED strips inside the case. That said, when not looking at the motherboard, the customization available to change the lighting throughout the case and in all of the case fans is a huge relief compared to what some of Acer's competitors offer at this price point and they chose components that can easily be upgraded or reused down the road, even the case is able to be reused, if you wish, with a standard ATX layout and any weird supports or random metal oddities staying out of the way of switching the motherboard if something were to require replacing it or you decide to change CPU platforms.
In the box: the case is well packaged and everything inside was securely (in some cases, VERY securely... the GPU bracing) tightened down with a lot of reinforcement and bracing in the case. The tempered glass and case is all very well protected with nice quality, reusable foam that is form fitted. The I/O on the back panel is a little limited for the USB mega-users (me) but the front/top panel offers 3 USB-A and 1 USB-C, along with headphone and microphone 3.5mm ports. The keyboard is a membrane keyboard that is "gamer" looking, it is more than usable, but you may want to use one of your choice. Overall the keyboard is okay and has a nice implementation of RGB, same with the mouse. Both are wired and will probably be the first thing you will upgrade. The RAM is one of the bigger disappointments for aesthetics, as both sticks are green PCBs with not incorporated heat spreader or LEDs and do not match the black PCB of the motherboard and GPU, but with great performance and TWO sticks of RAM... and that's what truly matters.
Performance: excellent! I threw AAA game titles at this machine and it ate them up at high framerates, minimal noise, and cool. As odd as I personally find this case to be, the airflow is quite good! GTA V at 1440P all max settings was no problem, averaging around 140 FPS, Battlefield V and COD:BOCW/Warzone were very similar, with FPS matching my 165Hz 1440P monitor with ease and getting closer to 200 FPS average with frame limiting off! The i7 12700F and 16GB of 4800MHz DDR5 RAM was able to handle Cinebench R23 pretty handedly, with performance more in line with beefier productivity processors, like the AMD Threadripper series, and still with minimal noise and limited heat from the system.
Overall, if you feel confident in building your own system, the current GPU market allows for the ability to actually get GPUs like the RTX 3070 in this system for a competitive price and you will be able to choose your own aesthetics. From my prior experience with Acer gaming laptops and monitors, I am quite please by the look they decided to go with on the Predator Orion 5000 and the decision to make all of the LEDs addressable in an easy to use software system. The "bloatware" is the pretty standard stuff and really quite limited, which is very nice. This is a nice system, it would be something that is a great choice is you're buying a gaming PC for someone or yourself and you don't want to get lost in the weeds of custom built systems or which system integrator is okay or good. This is a very safe, great performing, very upgradable pick for a gaming setup that will work now and in the future.
I can say, I would probably recommend this system for anyone who is not comfortable building their own, looking for the name recognition of a larger manufacturer like Acer, and wants something that is ready to go straight out of the box while being able to handle demanding gaming and productivity loads. I am very impressed and the case has definitely grown on me in the past few weeks daily driving the system.

Excellent portable projector for the price!
on August 14, 2022
Posted by: Mike
The Yaber Buffalo Pro U9 projector is the perfect family companion for those nice summer nights to bring friends and family together to watch a movie or sports! The portability of this projector is made even more evident the second you open the box and find the projector, remote, cabling, and screen are all neatly tucked away inside a fitted backpack! This was an incredibly well thought out addition to this setup and makes storage and transportation incredibly easy. The build quality is sturdy and the sound quality is pretty good for the onboard speakers, more than enough to allow everyone around to hear what is going on. Setup is very quick and easy, especially with the ability to use Mirrocast, Bluetooth, and Airplay along with the dual HDMI and USB-A inputs! The screen is okay for quick use, but the creasing from being folded can be pretty distracting, I mostly just project onto a lighter colored wall for convenience. Picture quality is very nice for this price point, especially with a slightly dimmer LED lighting system, I could compare it to the laser projector that I use in my cycling pain cave, but that's not even close to a fair comparison (that is a $1000 projector). All together, this is an incredibly all-inclusive system that is ready to roll out of the box and will work with anything you can plug in through HDMI. I can definitely recommend this for family movies outside, quick projecting on a white wall for sports parties, and even a more permanent usage as a kids movie setup. The quality you get for the price is excellent and Yaber sets you up for portable projecting success!

Very good performance, very upgradeable!
on August 10, 2022
Posted by: Mike
When I chose the Alienware m17 r5 I had incredibly high hopes for the device, especially as a current owner of the x17 r1, and I have to say I am very pleasantly surprised! The build quality is very solid with generous cooling and slim bezels, good sized trackpad and a phenomenal fully addressable RGB keyboard! The I/O is nicely thought out and reasonably well equipped, though some decisions (mostly due to the AMD chip inside) seem haphazard at this price range, like the lack of power delivery via USB-C or even a second DP capable USB-C port on the back I/O panel to complement the HDMI port and/or the other USB ports. The webcam is okay to stream on, with pretty good color reproduction and video quality that will look more than fine on a game stream's small window showing you and on programs such as Teams and Zoom. I wouldn't necessary place this laptop in the "school first, games second" category of gaming laptops, but it's sleek appearance (especially in the all black "dark side of the moon" coloring and a low-key RGB mode) will definitely allow you to blend in the classroom or office without immediately screaming "gaming laptop." The trackpad is nice, but not glass, so smoothness takes a little use to get going. Internally, there are two DDR5 DIMMS, both populated out of the box (8GBx2) and both replaceable! There is also a second PCIe 4.0 NVMe slot that, after some complaints on prior Dell/AW laptops, comes with the mounting slider! It also comes with a heatsink ready to use for the second storage drive and the main SSD is fully replaceable, as well. The cooling system is the same with most of the newer Dell/AW gaming systems, with the CPU, GPU and heat pipes all on top of the board (facing toward the keyboard and you) for better thermal performance and longevity of the chips at the low cost of having to dismantle most of the laptop when it comes time to change the thermal past in a few years. All around, very well built machine with future upgradeability options and an easy to access chassis (with the right experience and comfort level, not comfortable, then go to a professional).
This laptop proves itself when it comes to gaming, I was able to average around 120 FPS in GTA V and around 200 in a competitive setting (all high, no RTX) and 140 FPS in a more cinematic setting (Maxed settings, RTX & DLSS set to quality) in COD:BOCW and Warzone! For more productivity tasks, this thing rocks for rendering and is a streaming beast! While streaming at 1080P, recording, AND playing games all through this system and OBS Streamlabs onboard, there were no quality slips, no lag, stuttering or audio issues and the gaming performance lost may 5% in heavy activity section of the map (COD). All the while, the laptop was still reasonably quiet (for a gaming laptop) and very cool, the keyboard never even got close to being "warm" to the touch around the WASD keys! The only drawbacks I would say are that you may have to play with the settings a bit to truly unlock the full performance of the system, but the BIOS settings and NVIDIA Control Panel both allow you to select the preferred GPU you would like to use, I set mine to the RTX 3070 Ti full-time as I am usually using the system as a portable workstation and am rarely away from an outlet for more that 2 hours. Which brings me to battery life... using the auto-optimize settings will net you around 7-8 hours streaming 1080P video over wifi and closer to 5ish hours in actual light browsing and productivity before being alerted to find an outlet, not bad at all for a gaming first laptop with this amount of power and the light productivity would be very akin to something you would expect for general school/college or office type work. Gaming on battery is like most other powerhouse laptops, using the RTX 3070 Ti in AAA or graphics intensive games will get you maybe an hour, two if you're lucky with a dim screen and lighter gaming can double those numbers. This is where the ability to control which GPU you use really comes in handy, as you can still get close to 60 FPS in GTA V off the onboard Radeon graphics with some playing around with the quality (mostly high/med in 1080P) and still get close to 3ish hours off a charge. Dimming the screen and turning off that sweet addressable RGB will be the key to that, but bring a charger. The charge in the box is the standard Dell 240 watt behemoth, not the newer GaN one that is 1/4 the weight and size. The inability to charge over USB-C hinders this as well, since the x17 can function as a "normal" laptop pretty well at 65 or 90 watts in an emergency, but the big adapter is a necessity on this unit for any power, much less the full 150 watt cap for the RTX 3070 Ti onboard! Luckily the Dell GaN charger can be purchased separately and functions perfectly with the m17 r5.
I would definitely recommend this system for anyone looking for a gaming, streaming, editing, and productivity powerhouse laptop that can easily work for school/college, and last through the day of courses with little fear of being away from an outlet. The power, build, performance, and capabilities definitely justify the cost, but look around at the x17 range if the prices are close, the gap is usually a little more than the Dell 240w GaN charger and the Thunderbolt4/USB4 PD capabilities might be worth the price jump, but for a very similarly performing laptop. All things considered, this is an excellent machine at a slightly more approachable price than the x17 series!

Easy setup and excellent peace of mind!
on August 10, 2022
Posted by: Mike
We have been using a different camera to keep tabs on our little on for a while now, but it is a regular indoor camera that is meant more for security than peace of mind. The Owlet Cam 2 not only offers quick and easy setup, but the peace of mind you didn't even know you wanted! The app is very easy to use and walks you through the setup process, including installation of the camera and safe practices for the cords to ensure your little one is safe from hazards like the power cord and the device itself. Included in the box is the charger and cable, mounting bracket, and cable covers to hide the power cable from becoming a danger and an eyesore. The unit comes with everything you need in the box, except a smartphone and young one! The app displays all of the usual items one has come to expect from a home camera, but also includes the temperature and humidity of the area to ensure they are comfortable. The camera is also capable of night vision, two-way voice communication, cry/motion/sound notifications to alert your attention to your young one's needs.
I would definitely recommend this for new parents all the way up to older kids, the feature set built in and the fun facts in the app ensure that you will be able to continue using the Owlet Cam 2 well beyond their toddler years!

A do-it-all 4K TV, but its a really good a monitor
on August 7, 2022
Posted by: Mike
To start, I wish this would have existed when I was younger as it is the perfect setup for a room that you either don't have space for a TV and a monitor or you just don't want the extra clutter of having both! This is the perfect monitor for a college student to have in a dorm or an apartment with roommates, because it truly can do-it-all! The picture is great for most things, not competitive gaming, but for most casual gamers (PC or console) this will match perfectly with their needs and offer a nice, crisp 4K experience. The included stand is easy to install and stable, with the ability to tilt and the option of mounting using a VESA mount for the wall or a monitor stand. There are two HDMI ports and two USB-A ports and a USB-C power & display port that will easily cover your computer, USB media, and a cable box or console, as well. The remote is intuitive and easy to use with buttons below the center Samsung logo if the remote is out of reach or otherwise unavailable. Setup of the "smart" features is easy handled through Samsung's SmartThings app to setup using your phone, but if you prefer to navigate with the remote to setup the monitor and built-in apps, that is also an option. The Tizen OS is very responsive and has a great selection of apps and more coming to the platform over time, the only major app I was attempting to use that was unavailable is Bally Sports to watch a Brewers game, but I was easily able to switch to my Windows PC that was connected for streaming that. The USB-C connection is a huge benefit for those with a laptop or tablet that can send display to the monitor AND power the device, greatly reducing the number of cables necessary! I don't know if the USB-C port is Thunderbolt 3 or 4 certified, but I am able to send video from my Surface Pro 8 and charge it through the one included cable! I have not attempted to power the display from my Surface Pro or Alienware's Thunderbolt 4 ports, but it would make this the ultimate tailgating monitor!
Overall, I would highly recommend this monitor for college students looking for one screen to run all that they need for school, gaming and streaming apps. This would make an excellent choice for new students that will be living in the dorms for the first time and will want something that has a small footprint and big features. Not a student? I would still highly recommend this for a kitchen TV, guest room, or a utility monitor/TV that can be moved around with ease and used wherever you need it! My significant other and I love to bring this thin and light monitor onto our balcony to watch baseball games and movies while enjoying great weather (not made for outdoor use and not IP rated, but be smart and keep it safe from the elements if you choose to use it outside).

Good sound, comfortable fit, bad interference
on August 7, 2022
Posted by: Mike
The Barracuda Pro headset is a very clean and professional looking headset that is very comfortable to wear for extended gaming sessions or for work and school, making it an excellent choice on paper for students and professionals looking for something they can game on, but also take into the office and not immediately signal "gamer" to everyone. The fit is fantastic, with a very comfortable and adjustable headband, the earcups are comfortably padded and large enough to fit bigger ears, and the materials are both durable and premium feeling. The box includes a very nice carrying case that holds everything you need to use the headset and keeps them safe while traveling, with a convenient storage compartment in the middle that holds the RF dongle, USB-A to male C charging cable, and USB-A to female C extension cable for the dongle. This latter cable is extremely important because this headset has some of the worst wireless interference I have ever experienced, whether it is connected directly to your device or via the extension dongle (laptop, PS5, AND XBox X)! Bluetooth works great and allows you to hear all that this headset has to offer: incredible spatial sound, great noise cancellation, and very good microphone quality. The latest firmware update has reduces this a little for me at home, where I run as much on a 5GHz band as possible, but in the office is terrible. I have not had a full connection dropout, but the constant buzzing and clipping from interference is horribly distracting while trying to chat on a work call or over in-game chat while playing COD. I really want to like these for a "do-it-all" wireless headset, but I suppose I'll have to continue with a multiple headset setup or using these purely with Bluetooth.
I can't really recommend these unless the wireless interference issue is solved or you use exclusively wired connections for everything else, but that's unlikely. I really like everything else about these and they are very well built with great sound over Bluetooth, but there are too many other options that don't have the interference problem this has to be able to honestly recommend them.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Powerful, light, and great battery life!
on July 29, 2022
Posted by: Mike
This is our first ever Dyson vacuum and it is incredible! From the moment you open the box, the attention to detail in the instructions, commitment to environmentally friendly packaging (ALL recyclable paper-based packaging!!!), and all of the accessories! I have had a fair share of cordless vacuums, including a second battery is basically standard after reaching a certain price-point, but Dyson does one better and includes a second charge, too! This is fantastic for someone that has a two story home and doesn't enjoy having to bring the vacuum up back downstairs to charge it if I get into a super deep cleaning mode and actually manage to kill the battery before finishing vacuuming. The controls are intuitive but I would still recommend a brief stroll through the instruction manuals to become completely familiar with the functionality, especially the different uses for the two rollers... the hair remover head, which is the main one we use since our dog sheds a little and my significant other sheds a lot and she doesn't care to vacuum or clean the hair out of the vacuum roller if/when it clogs. We have not had any issues with hair clogging any of the cleaning heads, or any other objects being missed by this vacuum. My favorite feature is the battery life estimator that shows the estimated amount of time remaining based on cleaning modes and power, this is an absolute game changer! Our old cordless stick vacuum would show this in the app and show the power level on the display, but not the battery life on the display. I could go on and on about how fantastic this vacuum is and how Dyson knocked it out of the park, but trying it out is the real winner. It's on the pricier side of vacuums, but it is loaded with everything you could want and I have heard incredible things about Dyson's support, if you need to contact them. I would highly recommend!

Yes and no, the RAM and SSD are on the bottom, easily accessible, and the CPU & GPU are mounted on top/ facing the keyboard. There is a healthy amount of venting above the CPU & GPU as well as vapor chambers to assist with cooling, but to get to them you would have to remove the motherboard. You can see the backplates for the CPU & GPU just below the white cover over the cooling.

Is the m.2 1tb pci-e ssd drive a gen 3 or gen 4?

Hey packersfan036, I am also a Packers fan! From my research, SSD 1 (populated with the 1TB gen 3 SSD from the factory) is gen 4 and SSD 2 (empty from the factory) is only gen 3. Should be able to swap the bay and use a gen 4 on SSD 1. I have not tested this myself as I do not have a gen 4 SSD yet, but Mash IT on YouTube did and it worked well.

The Brydge 12.3 Pro+ wireless keyboard with touchpad matches the quality and functionality of the Surface Pro 4,5,6, and 7 seamlessly. Designed to meet the standards set by Microsoft, the Brydge 12.3 Pro+ features a precision touchpad, adjustable viewing angles and 3-level backlit keys, bringing a laptop-like experience to your Surface Pro.

Does the laptop have a front camera and is it also the laptop with the key board?

This is not a laptop, it is an accessory for the Microsoft Surface Pro (4 through 7) Windows tablet PCs. The keyboard base does allow for full use of the Surface Pro's front and rear camera. You would have to also have the separately sold Microsoft Surface Pro to fully use the Brydge Pro+.

Wemo WiFi Smart Outdoor Plug gives you total smart control over your lights, holiday decorations and other outdoor devices. Featuring two splash-proof and weather-resistant outlets, you can set schedules and control two devices together from anywhere by using the app or your voice with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, or Hey Google.* It’s perfect for the patio, yard or other spaces where you’d like to manage electric outlets. You can also use Away Mode to randomly turn porch or landscape lights on and off when you’re not home. Sync lights connected to the Smart Outdoor Plug with the sunset and you’ll walk out to a backyard that’s ready for evening activities.

Does this Wemo WiFi smart plug-outdoor, connect to a mesh WiFi system. I have some Wemo smart mini plugs thatonly connect to 2 ghz routers. The Mesh system I have doesn’t distinguish between 2 and 5 ghz bands, so the Wemo mini plugs do not connect my wifi

Seems very strange that you're having issues with connecting to the 2.4 GHz band, the plug should only see the band it can use and connect. I am running a Linksys MX10 Velop mesh router system and have had no problems connecting this or my other Wemo plug (Wemo Insight). It might be a good idea to try WPS to connect to the plugs or reach out directly to Belkin/Wemo for further assistance, they're great help if issues arise! After its set up to your network, it is incredibly easy to use!

I actually have 3 questions. Is this device gfi protected? Can I control each outlet separately? I’ve yet to see a straight answer on that question What are the current and temperature ratings for the device?

It is not independently GFI protected, but most/all outdoor outlets that it would plug into are required to be. Both outlets are controlled as one, i.e. if you turn off the outlet, they both turn off. For the current and temperature, it claims 32-104 Fahrenheit, but mine worked great yesterday and today with temperatures below 32 degrees (29 with a light drizzle and 24 with snow/sleet/rain, respectively) and has continued to worked fine.

Is it possible to use a different keyboard for a specific language? Spanish? Portuguese?

You are able to change the default language and add multiple additional languages for the keyboard through the "Language" settings. These are accessible through the phone Settings or directly through the keyboard! It is very easy to accomplish!

Will unlock version work on sprint network

The unlocked version should work on Sprint/T-Mobile, I would consult with them on which company's SIM to use due to their merger. It will likely be a T-Mobile SIM, but they should be able to definitively answer that for you through Sprint/T-Mobile customer service and the new SIM, if needed. It's really an amazing device!
