I bought an Apple Airport Extreme, certified refurbished. Thought I was getting a great deal. It arrived... plain in box, no apple packaging, no instructions, nothing. Just the AE, in the box, with the power cord.
Fine, I thought, maybe the previous owner threw all that out. So I plugged it in, downloaded instructions on my phone and tried to work through installation. When I got my computer to recognize it, it came up as "Kelli's Airport Extreme" and asked for a password. My name is not Kelli and I hadn't set up a network yet. So, this immediately tells me that this is not refurbished, it's returned. Still trying to keep an open mind, I googled a little and discovered other people who had purchased used items and recommended doing a factory re-set. I did that and tried to get going. I eventually called my ISP and tried to work with them on it (for TWO HOURS) and still nothing. I can connect directly via my modem, but as soon as I go through the Airport Extreme it's touch and go. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. So basically, someone else returned this, probably for the same reason, and they just re-sold this as a refurb. This is ridiculous. Oh, and the best part... I did try to call the 800# for the Geek Squad since there was a card for that in the box and even though this is supposed to be an item they refurbished, they would provide NO support. They basically told me to call Apple. (Or I could purchase a service package for Geek Squad.) Seriously? Bottom line: don't buy a Best Buy refurb.
