Wow, the people writing negative reviews for this sure are melodramatic. Don't be swayed by their hyperbole, prospective buyers! The truth is, you're not going to find a computer with these specs for the price (I paid $1149 on sale)--computers with smaller SSDs, no HDD, less RAM, and poorer-quality screens sell for around the same price. Yes, you may have to compromise a bit if you're comparing this with computers that cost a grand more, but come on. Let's be realistic. Most of the issues people are crying about are fixable by tweaking the settings, and the ones that aren't fixable really aren't worth another thousand bucks.
Now that that's out of the way...
Thanks to Best Buy's great return/exchange policy, this is the third 2-in-1 I tried, and I'm very happy with it. First was this one's baby sister--the q324ua. I liked it very much, but as a biostatistician who likes to have multiple windows visible at once, the 13-inch screen was just not sufficient, even with my portable external monitor attached. For my next choice, I tried the HP Envy x360. I used it for a half hour and took it right back--the lack of SSD was obvious in its slow speed. I considered the HP Spectre 360, but went with this as it was on sale and I had mostly liked the other Asus. I'm so glad I did. Its specs far outweigh the Spectre's (though I admit the spectre is sexier).
It handles all the number crunching I need to do with ease and speed (I use SAS and R, and typically have 5-6 other programs running in addition to my stats software.)
I actually really like the very slick trackpad, and the keyboard is very comfortable for me, as a woman with slender hands. It's great having a number pad as well, and the machine stays cool to the touch, which helps avoid sweaty wrists when typing. I've had no issues with tablet mode after ensuring my settings were as they should be. It's also not hard at all to change your settings so things you download or work you need to save goes to the HDD instead of the SSD.
Battery life is better than I expected. I don't stream a lot of video as this is primarily a work computer, but I can easily run a virtual machine or two, my stats software, a browser with several tabs, open and close countless spreadsheets and .pdfs, AND keep my screen brightness at 50% and get a good 5 hours out of this. Only downside is the fingerprint issue, but I knew that going into it.
Highly recommended if you need a real workhorse of a laptop but still want a relatively sleek profile and the option to use it as a tablet. Just get a couple cleaning cloths and be ready to change some of the factory settings and you're good to go!
