The Origins of Punk Rock
on February 23, 2015
Posted by: PoolmanProgger
I purchased this collection from BestBuy.com when it first came out. Being a big Ramones fan, but only being familiar with their familiar songs and punk standards, I was excited to get my hands on this collection and hear for myself the beginnings of punk rock. This is a fantastic bunch of songs, and it is really a treat to hear firsthand how the Ramones developed their iconic sound over their first six albums, from raw, gritty punks to polished hard rock veterans in only five short years. For any fan of punk rock or hard rock music in general, I highly recommend this collection.

An Excellent Collection
on February 23, 2015
Posted by: PoolmanProgger
Ordered this off of Best Buy.com a couple years ago, and I'm completely satisfied with this collection. Like all hard rock/heavy metal fans with a passing knowledge of Deep Purple, I was familiar with the seminal albums Deep Purple In Rock, Fireball and Machine Head, but little else in the discography. So, to further immerse myself in this great band, I bought this collection. For fans of early heavy metal/heavy prog, this collection is a must. Three of these albums are live recordings - Made in Europe and Made in Japan are probably two of the greatest live albums recorded in the 70s - and the seven studio outputs are all excellent as well. I knew Deep Purple was a good band before I bought this collection, but now I know that they are a GREAT band. How is this group not in the Rock Hall of Fame? Ritchie Blackmore plays virtuoso solos on many of the tracks, Jon Lord plays the organ like nopbody else, and Roger Glover pounds out a fantastic bass, not to mention Ian Paice's excellent drumming and Ian Gillan's (and later David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes) screaming vocals. A must-have collection for any fan of hard rock/heavy metal.

Often Overlooked Rush late-70s Masterpiece
on February 23, 2015

A Farewell to Kings is an album that is often overlooked by the casual prog fans, but is nonetheless essential to any Rush fan's collection. Farewell to Kings contains six songs, the most recognizable being "Closer to the Heart", Rush's first big hit single. The title track opens the album on a good note, but the album highlight is definitely "Xanadu". While not as polished as "2112", the title track from their previous album, "Xanadu" holds its own as a Rush classic, at times playing at a break-neck speed with many twists and turns along the way. In the song, the narrator is on a quest to find "Xanadu", a mythical place where he will find immortality. Also, it is the first Rush song to feature synthesizers. "Xanadu" truly is a triumph for the group. Another highlight is the closing track, "Cygnus X-1", a delirious thriller that leaves us on a cliffhanger. Fortunately, the song has a second part; "Hemispheres", the title track of their next album. While A Farewell to Kings is a little rough around the edges, and the "filler" tracks aren't as solid as other Rush albums of the era, Farewell to Kings is still a treat to any Rush fan.

One of the Best Prog Albums of All-Time
on February 23, 2015
Posted by: PoolmanProgger
I bought this album at a Best Buy store quite a while ago with the understanding that, along with Moving Pictures and 2112, this was an essential Rush album for any prog fan's collection. Wow, did this album not disappoint! Hemispheres may contain only four songs, but with this album, Rush definitely chose quality over quantity, as all four tracks are of superb quality. First of all, "Hemispheres", the title track, is pure awesomeness, with extreme shifts in time signatures and vocal deliveries. The 18-minute track centers around a mythological world in which love and reason clash. The next two tracks, "Circumstances", partly sung in French, and "The Trees", are also superb tracks. The final track, the epic instrumental "La Villa Strangiato" - or "The Strange Village" when translated - is perhaps the best prog instrumental ever conceived. In review, Hemispheres is a fantastic album, a highlight of Rush's discography, and a must-have for any fan of Rush or the prog rock genre. Get it now!

Perhaps Rush's best album
on February 23, 2015
Posted by: PoolmanProgger
Moving Pictures truly is a knock-out album. Rush had always been a fantastic band, but they had always been below mainstream. With Moving Pictures, Rush became an international sensation beloved by millions around the globe. Everybody knows the hits "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight", but the album also contains the classics "Red Barchetta", "YYZ", "Witch Hunt", "Vital Signs" and the 11 minute epic "The Camera Eye", which gives a glimpse into the synth-heavy period that Rush was about to embark on. All of the songs on this album are fantastic. In fact if I were to make a Rush Top 25 Songs list, all seven of these songs would probably be on it. Even if you're not a Rush fan, I would definitely recommend you getting this album. You won't regret it.

Life Changing Music (No, Seriously)
on February 23, 2015

I bought this album at an actual Best Buy store - you know, back when Best Buy actually stocked their music shelves with a huge variety of music, not just teeny-bopper and wannabe-Gangsta junk - about six years ago. I was familiar with Rush from the songs I'd heard on the radio and some fiddling around on YouTube, but I was not familiar with the epic 2112 until I saw a documentary about it on TV. This piqued my interest, and I was determined to go out and buy a copy. Fortunately, there was one at my local Best Buy. This album literally changed my life. Before this album, I wasn't really into prog at all. I thought it was just some dreamy, idealistic junk with boring mellotrons and dumb fantasy lyrics. Because of this album, I fully immersed myself into Rush, which is now one of my favorite bands (I'd put them in my top 5), and the prog genre in general. Because of 2112, I discovered perhaps the greatest music genre that has ever been conceived. It doesn't matter whether you like prog or not, this album is a MUST for any fan of music. 2112 just might be the greatest song ever composed and performed. The rest of the songs are OK as far as Rush material goes, but the epic, 20+ minute title track is worth the price alone.

One of the Coop's Best Albums
on February 10, 2015
Posted by: PoolmanProgger
I bought this album from BestBuy.com quite a while ago, and let me tell you, I really do love this album to death! First of all, I'm a huge Coop fan, so I've heard all of his - their, in this instance - albums. I can confidently tell you that this is EASILY in the top 5 of all AC albums. Containing the hit single "I'm Eighteen", this is the album that brought AC out of the druggy psychedelia of their first two albums and onto the scene as one of rock and rolls most exciting and fresh bands. This album offers a wide variety of music, from the grungy "I'm Eighteen", to the glammy "Caught In A Dream", proto-punk-prog of "Black Juju", the prog influenced Cooper classic "Ballad of Dwight Frye" and even the showtunes-inspired "Sun Arise". This album is really a treat, and not just for Cooper fans. I also recommend "Killer", "School's Out", "Welcome to My Nightmare" and "Alice Cooper Goes to Hell" if you want to further delve deep into the crazy, twisted mind of Alice Cooper.

One of Rock's All-Time Great Singer-Songwriters
on February 10, 2015

If there was any doubt in your mind about The Boss' place as an all-time great in rock and roll history - and really, how could you ever doubt - all of those doubts will vanish when listening to these albums, his first seven albums, and all of them classics. This collection includes the seminal classics "Born to Run", "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and "Born In The USA", the eclectic double-album "The River", the stark beauty of "Nebraska" that will conjure up memories of Woody Guthrie, and his wildly energetic first two albums before he found his "classic sound". Also included is a 60 page booklet with press clippings that is a treat to read, if you've got eyesight good enough to read the tiny print. Tremendous, tremendous package that every true rock fan needs in his or her collection. And if you're a Boss fan, these are all albums you were probably going to get anyway, so why not get them all in one convenient package? It gets my stamp of approval.

Elton John's Best - All in One Package!
on January 11, 2015
Posted by: PoolmanProgger
The early 70s were Sir Elton John's most prolific songwriting period. The five albums in this collection are easily among his best, and must haves for any fan of Elton John. If only Goodbye Yellow Brick Road were included! Fortunately, that album is also available on this site for a reasonable price. Lots of variety on these albums, from symphonic rock to country rock to old-timey piano bar tunes, this package is an absolute treat to listen to. Oh, and did I mention that there is bonus tracks? Yeah, this collection is a TREMENDOUS value, and any fan of early 70s rock music would be crazy not to get this.

Absolute Must Have for Coop Fans
on January 11, 2015

Alice Cooper is often overlooked by the musical community, but those who have given his music the time of day are usually rewarded big time. Still, many Coop fans are unfamiliar with his 21st century stuff, which is just as brilliant as his older material. These two albums both come in the same jewel case, with a lyrics booklet for all of the songs. Some songs are serious, some are witty, but for the most part, they're funny and catchy. The energy is raw, with Coop's band playing a fast brand of garage rock similar to the original Alice Cooper band. A true blast from the past and a real treat for both new fans and long-time Coop fans. If you only have the money to afford one of the two, I'd choose Dirty Diamonds, but its really 1a and 1b. If you're a Coop fan or just curious, I'd highly recommend this. You won't be disappointed.
