A classic revisited
on May 19, 2016

There's tons upon tons of reviews for the original Valkyria Chronicles floating about, so I won't touch on the story or gameplay, but I have this to say: this game is visually gorgeous. As someone who was always interested in the PS3 version, but never got around to buying it, this was a day-1 buy that was excellently priced and came in a lovely steelbook packaging. Honestly, the steelbook is pretty and eye-catching, and it'd make a wonderful display piece...plus, you'd have a great game attached, too!

Super easy to remove and apply. Long-lasting too! I've had my ink installed since I first got my printer (late last year), and it's held out quite well! I've been in the "low" section for several weeks, yet my papers still print brightly and clearly--no smudges at all!
Quick heads up though: if you use A LOT of ink, you might want to have two or more of these handy. They tend to sell out often in my area.

O sweet nostalgia!
on April 2, 2016
Posted by: Raitu
So, most of the reason for the score is because of KH1's camera which is freaking AWFUL and I don't remember it being that terrible during my PS2 days, but alas...we cannot have everything.
KH1 was my second game in the Kingdom Hearts franchise (II was my first), and I gotta say: it cleared a looooot of stuff up! Despite the janky camera which makes a lot of tasks much more difficult than they have to be (Alice in Wonderland world = UTTER PAIN), all the hack-n-slash fun was still in tact--just in much smoother HD! Seriously, Destiny Islands looks so bright and beautiful it's amazing.
But, skipping from the cinematics and how PRETTY the game is...
And skipping the story because yo I don't got time to explain it...
The gameplay! Discarding the camera (WHICH IS PAAAAIN, SO MUUUUCH PAIN), fights in KH are primarily hack-n-slash...until they're not. Some mini boss battles require time, thought, and planning: such as one boss, which you have to perfectly time a counter for. If you do this correctly, they will hit you and be knocked on their back, thus being vulnerable to your attack. This is the ONLY way to deal damage, otherwise they just tank your hits.
Additional bosses are added in, of course, and they are HARD and require speed (for summoning Tinkerbell to keep you alive), timing (for deflecting projectiles), and patience.
However, if you choose to go with a linear story path, you most likely won't have too much difficulty--depending on which mode you pick. You can most likely breeze through regular bosses in easy and normal mode, but as you go up in difficulty you'll have to put a bit more planning into your attacks.
For example, the boss in the Alice in Wonderland world will gain their fire attack much quicker if you actually use fire spells on them. So what do you do? You use your newly-gained Blizzard spell, that's what! Planning like this is simple, but settling an attack pattern is essential for saving your skin as you progress.
Now, as for Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories gameplay... I don't know! I haven't played it yet! I'm still playing KH, but it's nice to know I have another full game on standby on one disc for when I finish.
Oh, and the Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days movie?
That hurts, man.
In a good way.
(Super easy trophy too!)
All in all, I highly recommend this collection! Good price for two full games and one "movie".

I died 36 times

Or something like that.
On the heels of Fire Emblem Fates being released in the west, I received an onslaught of gaming news mentioning Fire Emblem Awakening. I was unmoved by proclamations of it being the best game ever, and resolutely held out on purchasing it. However, notice after notice of brand new news eventually wore on my will, and I ended up picking up a copy when Best Buy restocked their inventory.
So! My first ever Fire Emblem!
Let's get one thing outta the way real quick: Having to turn on the Japanese VA work after each session of turning your 3DS on is annoying. I know it's been a long-known glitch, and I wish it'd just be patched already. While the english voicework isn't bad, you'll never pry Tomokazu Sugita away from me so long as his voice is in a game.
So that detracted from the score...
Moving on, I actually was surprised by how much I enjoyed this game. Though the translation takes quite a few liberties (some cringeworthy in how notable they are), I found the story solid if a little cliche. But my true love was the avatar builder. Choices are still incredibly limited and I found myself dissatisfied with several options being build-exclusive, but I found the option to build your own avatar very liberating and agonized over it for a good several minutes.
The characters are a delight, and without mentioning names I can say I see several notable ones that really shine due to their given accent/speech patterns.
The gameplay was the hardest learning curve for me, as strategy games had never been my forte, but given the difficulty option, as well as casual mode (the mode that doesn't have perma-death) this can all be breezed over if you're a beginner (like me!).
I can't express much into this review, as from what I've glanced other reviews have summed up my thoughts nicely, so I'll leave you with this: Fire Emblem Awakening, more than any other FE game aside for possibly fates, is incredibly inclusive and you should definitely give it a try--even if you usually don't play strategy games!

Decent price for three flicks
on April 2, 2016
Posted by: Raitu
Note: I'm rating this as a collection based on price and quantity, not on the merits of the movies themselves.
So, this was purchased for my brother, and he absolutely LOVED the collection. I watched some bits too, and for the price I can reasonably say you get your money's worth...if you like(d) all three movies. I was only a real fan of the first one, which is forever a classic in my mind, and the soundtrack is timeless in my opinion. Whereas I easily saw myself purchasing this for myself just for the first flick, I can't say I'd be pleased if the movies were individually packed and priced the way they are.
Overall, unless you can't find the first flick standalone for a good price, or just want some easy Halloween marathoning, I'd give this a skip since I only like 1/3 of the movies shown.

Soon, the formerly isolated young girl finds herself on a journey with Lupin to locate her father — who holds the answers to her mysterious affliction.Step into the role of a lonesome young girl who is hiding a terrible secret in Code: Realize -Guardian of Rebirth-. Love and...?

Great googly moogly. you actually need terminology for this game. Two key terms before we start this review:
visual novel: a game that is very much a book. There's a lot of text and thus a lot of reading to be done. Usually, there's one true “path” to take, so even when there's multiple branching paths one end can be considered the true/canon end, or have so much detail it might as well be. This particular game is a pure visual novel, as there's no minigames to be seen like in Danganronpa's trials.
otome game: a game that has romance elements mixed with the story. The main character is usually a female.
Getting on with this, I'll go full-on with my thoughts on this game...which is actually a pretty unique perspective if I do say so myself—this is my first visual novel that is pureblooded with zero “game” aspects. Personally, I found it to be absolutely hilarious and engaging at some moments, and a utter drag during other bits. That's not to say it's bad—it's just that visual novels with no “breaktime” or “game” aspects mixed in get a little dull at times. It's like reading an engaging book, and getting a taste of the plot. You savor it and want more, but get frustrated during the exposition because you just want to get to the good stuff. Again, not a bad thing at all! This is more a personal thing, and no fault of the game itself. However, if you know you are impatient and will get antsy, you might want to factor that into your decision. There's A LOT of text, and though much of it is witty and cute, it can get to be a drag when you just want to get to the meat of things.
I'll skip over the plot itself—because that's what you play this for!—and cut to the romance. It's not forced on you, and the most you get is a flirty character absolutely lovestruck with the heroine. The actual romancing is based on decisions you make, and you're given scenes of spending time with the particular character you chose to hang out with. By doing this, the relationship growth feels a lot more natural yet still keeps the fantasy going on. At the end of the normal path AKA the path before the stories branch out, the guy with the most affection for the heroine ends up being your companion for, well, whatever the route in particular is going for!
Here, you get more choices, and more dishes of romance! It's not overly lovey-dovey though, and the plot is still pretty thick. Each route sheds more light on the chosen man and sub characters related to them in some way. It makes for interesting, diverse character growth, and the collectible CGs available per route feel like such an amazing reward because the art is gorgeous.
All in all, I can't praise the story enough, the characters are wonderful, and the different routes make this story replayable for them. The option to skip text is available for those starting another playthough but wanting to get past what they've seen already, so you won't be forced to relive the story if you don't want to. I'd recommend this to those who like good stories, don't mind the lack of regular gameplay, and don't mind spelling and grammatical errors. Oh, and you obviously must like reading and not mind romance stories!
Oh, quick note: keeping the heroine's name means the men will actually say her name, whereas naming her something else has no voicework attached. Nice little extra!

A first-timer to dungeon crawling
on February 6, 2016
Posted by: Raitu
First of all, I'd like to say I would not recommend this game to newcomers to dungeon crawling, mostly because mixing it with the Pokemon element does lead to quite a few more game mechanics that can be utterly overwhelming as a starter into the genre.
In my experience, I found the difficulty to rise and fall; appropriate considering how Pokemon type match-ups apply in this case, and being a fire-type wandering in a water-type dungeon can end you. FAST. That said, there's always ways of rescuing yourself if you faint, but this IS limited. So, if you do fail and end up starting over, you at least know what you're going into.
All your items and money vanish though, so be warned!
I personally managed to claw my way up to a little over mid-story, before type match-ups ended up stalling me. As this can be frustrating and repetitive to go through, I wouldn't recommend it for those buying this on a whim or especially for those that are impatient.
However, not everything is bad: the game, once you get used to some of the mechanics and start planning out your dungeon crawling better, is incredibly fun. And playing as a Pokemon is NEVER old. The characters are much more full of like and quirky, and the script definitely made me chuckle several times.
The story isn't anything to write home about, although I personally did like the generic plot twist for what it was. It felt very appropriate for what this title was going for.
Anywho, final verdict: WOULD recommend to fans of Pokemon that are not first-time dungeon crawlers, but WOULD NOT recommend to those inexperienced with the genre, or those not fond of Pokemon fluff. Entertaining game sure to keep you busy for hours--if you're patient with it. Definitely give it a try if you match up well~!

The nostalgia gets HD'd

I, like several others, originally got into Kingdom Hearts thanks to the PS2 games. In my case--Kingdom Hearts II was my first game because who needs order when you stumble upon Disney characters on boxart? Anywho, the long and short of it is--you get a fully remastered and nicely done HD version of Kingdom Hearts II, but you also get Birth by Sleep, which was a PSP title, and which I dearly love.
Add in the cinematics from Kingdom Hearts Re:coded and you get a pretty nice bundle--two frankly fantastic FULL games and some cutscenes from a DS title. So, yes, I'd definitely rec this for anyone wanting to get into KH, but unsure! Unless you're really set on the order of things, which I'd then rec 1.5 first.

I love this game!
on September 5, 2015
Posted by: Raitu
I always hesitate to say "I love this game!" or "this is my favorite!" simply because with so many games coming out each year, my opinion is bound to change. However, with Fantasy Life, I feel like I can honestly say I love it without going back on this word a few years down the line. Fantasy Life is ridiculously fun, funny, and free. It definitely lives up to the title!
To get this out of the way, in my playthrough, I let the story play second fiddle to my adventuring. When I mentioned Fantasy Life is free, I meant it. You can do whatever you want with the class you pick, whether that be collecting items, creating items, grinding your level up on monsters or in your occupation, completing quests, or just changing Lives and seeing how they all turn out! See, the story is only invoked if you provoke it by completing Butterfly's quests--so if you don't want the plot to go on just yet, simply ignore those quests and do what you like. Or, alternatively, finish the plot and then do whatever you like!
Fantasy Life has so much freedom it's actually spoiling in my opinion. The only times when your freedom is restricted is if you level up your occupation too much and need to access a new area which--surprise--needs story progression to unlock. This can be a bit of a bummer and jarring when you're so into doing your own thing, but completing a new story chapter to unlock a certain area is relatively fast and painless, and you'll find yourself having access to new areas, materials, and quests.
Would I recommend Fantasy Life? 100000x YES! It's a MUST HAVE for 3DS-owners in my opinion! A little advice, though: don't get discouraged if some quests are simply impossible to complete. For example, starting off as a Cook will be difficult, as you need to gather ingredients which may be difficult to acquire if you don't have other skills to back them up. For example, I found the Cook Life to be incredibly easy as I had already advanced the story a bit by then, but I also had a Master Rank as an Angler and could provide my own fish--no purchase or struggle necessary! So what's that "advice" I mentioned? Try a lot of Lives! Try all the Lives! Not only do they support each other in some cases, but they're all really fun to try!

A first Mario game!
on September 5, 2015
Posted by: Raitu
Well, not "Mario" but you get the point. I've had little to no interest in Mario games, but I had heard talk-of-mouth about this game being good, and I needed something new for the 3DS, so I decided to give it a try.
The premise is very fun--with a cutesy horror theme involving quirky, "spooky" ghosts and a scaredy cat being talked into wrangling them all up. It all made for a seemingly enjoyable experience until the actual exploring came into play. Although exploring is encouraged--it's how you gather coins, dollars, and gold bars for upgrades--each mission for the game is strictly that: a mission. After finishing, you aren't allowing to explore some more. Instead, you are called by E. Gadd and zapped away from the location. Your freedom is very much restricted in that aspect, so this isn't a game for someone that likes to explore locations further without being trapped doing the same missions over and over.
And you HAVE to do the first missions at LEAST twice if you want to find the hidden enemies--Boos--later on. This isn't particularly difficult, but if you dislike backtracking, again, the game is not for you. Especially since the save mechanic only saves AFTER you complete each a mission, so no saving and coming back to it if you get bored/tired repeating missions.
Being my first ever Mario game, I can't say I was instantly charmed. The game is fun without the backtracking, which of course is completely optional if you're not a completionist. The save mechanic can be combated easily by putting the 3DS in sleep mode, so it's not a big issue either. However, the lack of true exploration bothered me quite a bit--especially after coming out from playing Fantasy Life. All in all, not really a game I can see myself picking up again, but nonetheless enjoyable for what it was.
