Most Expensive, Least Reliable of Nine Bose Items
on March 15, 2016
Posted by: lasvegascolonel
from North Las Vegas, NV
With nine Bose purchases under my belt over the past ten years, I have had great performance and reliability with all of them—except the most expensive one—the QC25. Though I have other Bose and other brands of headphones I use, I bought the QC25s around Christmas 2014 to use specifically in our Las Vegas casinos. My wife and I go the buffets once a week. Afterwards, she plays the slot machines and I try to find a quiet spot in the casino and listen to my iPod. It’s challenging as the machines are noisy, background music is on, and people are talking. So for about 7 hours a month for several months in 2015, I used them there…and they were great, blocking out almost all the background noise. People would even come up to me while I was listening there, tap me on the shoulder, and say, “can you really hear music on those with all the noise going on?” I’d say, “yes, these are Bose!”
In the summer of 2015, i noticed the left side giving out on occasion. I thought that was strange. I re-installed the cable as Bose often suggests, but it didn’t help. I did find slightly pushing on the ear cup usually brought the sound back, but sometimes I had to hold them in. This happened only a few more times over the next couple of months, and seemed to disappear, so I figured whatever it was worked itself out. In Fall, my wife got me a pair of Bose SoundTrue Ultra earphones as they are easy to carry around. I found those were easy to take to the casino and were almost as good at isolating, but not canceling, the casino noises, so I used these instead of my QC25s for a few months. After Christmas 2015, however, I took out my QC25s again and upon setting them up to use in the casino, found the left side was completely dead. No matter what I did to try to make it play, it just wouldn’t work. I was very disappointed.
I contacted the Bose Outlet Store here in Las Vegas to ask about repairs. The sales rep knew nothing about the QC25 when I talked about its electronics, but said Bose doesn’t do out-of-warranty repairs. He said if they were within warranty, he could help me with an exchange, but basically I was just out of luck. He said Bose Customer Service would tell me the same thing. He also said he heard of this issue I had with these, and Bose did apparently make a fix after the summer of 2015, but I guess never made public the fix. Unfortunately, mine were made in 2014. Just outside the warranty and according to my calculations, less than 70 hours use, I was now out almost $300! They were both the most expensive and least reliable Bose product I’ve purchased. Since the Bose Store said there is nothing they could do, I figured I didn’t want to pay to get this defect fixed, so I gave them to my grandson who likes to tinker with things. He couldn’t get them to work and ended donating them to charity.
So, my dilemma is this: I want a noise-canceling headphone set to use in the casinos again, but can’t morally justify paying an additional $300 for a Bose product that performed so poorly with such little use (70 hours is not even three days!) I’m torn between buying another brand, though I don’t like rechargeable batteries some brands use rather than the replaceable AAA batteries Bose uses, or I could wait probably two to three more years and gamble the Bose QC35 will be more reliable. I love Bose comfort but don’t know if I want to wait years for the new model. While I rate all my other Bose products very high, this one is diminished in my eyes by its extremely short life span (less than 70 hours!) I love and use all my other eight Bose products I bought. Bose, I know you can do better than just three full day’s worth of use with this QC25!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Cord Replaceable
on September 26, 2014
Posted by: lasvegascolonel
A recent reviewer mentioned not being able to get a replacement cord. Bose does sell this cord. That is one of the best features about the new SoundTrues. The previous version (AE1) you had to buy new headphones or send them in for repair. You can buy the new cable in matching colors to your headphone. The cost is high, though, at $30. These may not be the very best audio quality, but they are the most comfortable of headphones---even moreso than Bose QC25 which weigh more.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Disappointing Headphones
By AgentBubbles
When I was originally looking to buy new headphones, I constantly found myself looking at these Bose headphones. I thought they sounded great every time I tested them out at the stores. Every review I read was great, so I decided to take the plunge and buy them. I didn't realize before buying that the noise cancelling was battery charged instead of rechargeable, but I figured I could deal with that. When I put some music on the try them out, I was instantly disappointed in the sound quality because it was fuzzy sounding and a lot quieter than I wanted. Also, the noise cancelling function gave me a headache, but when I turned that off, the sound quality worsened. I ended up returning them after a week.

Actually, the fact these don't have a rechargeable battery is one reason many people like them. For airplane travelers, there is nothing worse than having a rechargeable headphone and have it not charged, or run out. You can't charge your rechargeable on the plane. Also, when rechargeables die, you either send the headphones off to get the battery replaced or throw them out. But I agree the inner ear pressure hurt my ears too. I found that true with Bose and Beats.

No Resolution
March 17, 2016
Update: 3/17/16: Per Bose' request, I contacted them. Their solution to these defective headphones was for me to retrieve these from Goodwill (in another state), pay to send them back, and then they'd do me a "one-time favor" and send me another pair. Really? I don't think that's the answer. Guess my previous 8 purchases with them are not relevant. Rather than wait for the QC35s to come out in two to three years, pay another $300 for short life headphones, I guess I'll get another brand. Many of my associates where I volunteer also find it incredible that Bose would tell me not to deal with their stores. I guess I foolishly thought they were the same company. My wife and I have been loyal Bose purchasers for years. Too bad Bose doesn't see that.

good when they work
By christifurious
I am very disappointed in these bose headphones. I did my research before spending the ridiculous amount of money, should of listened to the reviews. Worked great at first. After about 5 hours of use, the left side only works intermittently. I am so mad that I haven't contacted bose yet about the problem. Its too late to return to the store. I would never spend this much money on headphones again. Bose is a great company and I really like their products. I'm sure they will fix with no problem, but its just the hassle of it.

Same With Mine
March 17, 2016
I also had the same issue (same page as yours). I was able to use my QC25s for a total of less than 70 hours (3 days). After using Bose earphones, the SoundTrue Ultras for a couple of months, I went back to my QC25s, which had been sporadic, and they didn't work at all. Called Bose todqy, at their request, but they said not much they could do, other than selling me another set for $300. Guess I'll look at other brands, even though I like the other 8 Bose products I've purchased.

Similar Experience
March 22, 2016
I and apparently many others had experiences not with them being broken, but with the headphone sound not coming out of one of thte sides. I got to use mine less than 70 hours total. When they finally gave out, the warranty had expired. I think $300 was too much for poorly-made headphones, though my other 8 Bose products are all excellent and cost less. Bose did offer me free shipping if I bought another but no discount so I passed.

Bose Headphones

The headphones are great quality and work well for traveling. My only complaint about them is they use AA+ batteries instead of a rechargeable plug in battery. We had these headphones before and was hoping to use the same type of battery.

Better Off with Non-Rechargeable Battery
March 25, 2016
Though I had bad reliability with the QC25s (as well as some others), the one good aspect of them was the AAA battery (not the AA). Rechargeables are problem prone for anyone who uses these on planes (many people). If a rechargeabel fails on a long flight, you are stuck. You also have to wait for them to charge. And eventually, the rechargeable will have to be replaced and is quite expensive. The AAA batteries are fresh, low cost, and are USER replaceable...you never will run out of power.

Could/should have been 4 star, however..
By Dreemer1961
I really wanted to like these Bose headphones, and I hate having to give a low rating to any product, but in all honesty in this case I feel I must. The major defect is that the cable/cord connector is way too loose causing the right speaker to stop working. I am saying that barely touching the cord or simply turning my head would cause this failure! If you are lucky enough to get a good working pair, then these would be 4 star headphones. The noise cancelling and overall sound of these Bose are pretty great, in my opinion (I'm no audio expert, but I know what I like). The other major fault I find in these headphones is their general lack of volume (except when using my MacBook Pro laptop). I constantly wanted to raise the volume when using my Galaxy Note 5 or my Galaxy Tablet S2, but it was impossible to get them loud enough, and in truth I am not an "ear blaster" type of listener at all. I wish I had read the low ratings these headphones have received before I bought this disappointing product. The problems I have with these headphones are fairly common. I returned them asap, and exchanged them for a pair of V-Moda Crossfade M100 that are superior to these overrated Bose in just about every respect. If you are looking for a stylish, great sounding set of headphones, do yourself a favor and check them out (and no I do not work for V-Moda nor am I a paid spokesperson!)

A Very Common Defect
March 31, 2016
Dreemer: Your experience parallels many, including me. Unlike many other manufacturers, I've found that my 3 Bose headphones all have weak jack connections, even after firmly pushing them in. That's not as bad, though, as the speakers failing because of a common wiring defect. Mine were intermittent (I've written on this site) for a year. When they finally failed, the warranty was up and Bose would only sell me another with free shipping. Compared to other brands, Bose is having many issues with connections, poor cable life, and sometimes one side completely going out (mine was the left side). Some people think the folding in the case procedure puts stress on the wiring. All I know is that for $300, 70 hours worth of use is not worth it.

Strong Battery
April 15, 2016
Actually, the 35 hour battery life of the AAA alkaline is better than if you charged your own AAA battery---and definitely better than if the unit had its own rechargeable battery. When you are on a plane and they die, you're out of luck usually. Also, when the headset gets older and the rechargeable battery dies, you either have to throw the headphones out, send them off to get fixed, and spend a lot of money for a new battery. As long as you remember to shut them off after use, you should get excellent battery life of a regular AAA alkaline. Bose doesn't recommend getting AAA rechargeables as they do not last 35 hours.

Missing features and design concerns
By pcm2a
I have the bluetooth wireless Beats studio headphones that I will be comparing in this review to the Bose Quiet Comfort 35. I am totally happy with the Beats but I wish the noise canceling was better. All of the reviews say that Bose destroys everyone else when it comes to noise canceling. I bought the Quiet Comfort on June 5th, 2016 at Best Buy.
Sound quality: I am no audiophile and both sound fine to me. The only difference is a little more bass with the Beats and a larger volume range with the Bose. By this I mean that I can turn the Bose volume down lower than the Beats before it cuts out.
Noise cancelation: The Bose noise cancelation works better than the Beats, but don't be tricked by this. They block out maybe 10-15% more noise, not like a thousand percent better.
Comfortability: The Bose are lighter and more comfortable than the Beats. I can wear both for many hours on end without issue.
Bluetooth: Work fine and the range goes a little farther away from my phone/laptop than the Beats.
Build quality: Huge concerns here. I don't know how long this gel/mesh material on the top is going to last. Also the headphones don't fold up like "normal" ones do. See my attached photo on how they fold up. They are designed to fit in the fancy case but if you don't have that case with you then I guess you through them in your bag and they get broken. Why couldn't they have folded up normally?
Wired connection: What in the world is with this 2.5mm jack on the headphones? Why not use a standard 3.5mm cable? An even bigger issue is that there is no support for microphone! My work laptop does not have bluetooth so I need to be able to plug in my headset. "Maybe" it would work with the QC25 cable but the manual doesn't say either way and if so this should have been included in such an expensive product.
Verdict: I will be testing these out for another week but I expect that I will return them to the store. For $350 plus tax I was expecting to be blown away with the noise cancelation and I was not. I also was expecting to not lose any features compared to the Beats, but losing microphone on the headphones cable is a deal breaker. It seems like Bose has came late to the bluetooth game and not brought anything gound breaking enough to justify the high price.

Bose Quality/Bad Battery Setup
June 11, 2016
I agree with much of your review. I have 8 Bose products but this might be a dealbreaker for me since it would be highly inconvenient, especially on a plane. The current QC25, and more reliable QC15, have low cost, 35 hour, consumer-replaceable batteries. This is a non-consumer replaceable, high cost, battery. I've found on planes that if your headset discharges with a rechargeable battery, you're usually out of luck. Plus, to replace this battery is fairly expensive. Also, this appears to fold just like the QC25, which has been a major issue for many of us (me included) as the folding procedure causes the wires to bend and ultimately break. The more reliable QC15s, selling much cheaper currently, are more volume, flatter headband, thicker cables, a better jack, and the Hi/Lo switch which is useful for airline travelers.

If the lithium battery dies on you while you are at the Airport, is the battery quickly replaceable? Can you quickly swap out a spare battery when you need one in a hurry?

Unfortunately, no. The previous models were more consumer-friendly and had longer batteries (35 hours vs. 20 on these). Unfortunately, you will get less and less hours of music available as the battery ages. For thta reason, some people might want the QC25s, or the more reliable QC15s, which don't have the folding pattern of the QC25/35 which has caused issues on the 25s.

what is the difference between noise canceling and noise isolation

Noise canceling is more effective and usually requires battery operation. Noise isolation is passive and refers to the noise isolation of the earpads. Bose mades earphones (not headphones) that are noise isolating, called the SoundTrue Ultras. They are not battery operated but reduce the amount of ambient noise entering the earphones.

Are these compatible with non apple products?

Can I use them with a Samsung Galaxy S4/Android phone and or a Microsoft Zune mp3 player?
These headphones, as well as the Bose QC25, are fully compatible with Apple products (iPod, iPhone, iPad) but with Android only the pause/talk button works, not the volume buttons. I am not familiar enough with the Zune player.
