Snowpiercer was a very big, and very pleasant surprise. It came out of nowhere, with no advertising and hardly any theatres even showed it. But boy, am I glad I saw it.
In the future, in the midst of the second Ice Age, a sole train in perpetual motion circles the world. This train carries the last of humanity. Split up into different sections, the tail being the poor and the front being the rich, the rear section decides to revolt and fight their way to the front.
An all star cast includes Chris Evans, who proves that he can actually act, and is quite different from his charming, squeaky clean Captain America act. Tilda Swinton is a tour de force, completely bizarre and just magnificent. Octavia Spencer, Jamie Bell, and John Hurt also make memorable appearances, although I won't spoil them. The two Korean leads are also magnificent.
As the 'tailies' fight their way to the front, they pass through a variety of train cars, none what you would expect. The special effects and set design throughout the train are stunning.
This movie has a lot of political themes going on under the surface, and is a much smarter and layered movie than you would probably expect. But don't worry; this film has some of the most memorable action scenes in years. From beginning to end, this film hardly lets up. It does let up though, just enough for you to get to know and love these characters.
Not your typical Hollywood movie! Takes a lot of risks, and almost all of them pay off. Different, smart, and thrilling. highly recommended.
