just set up after buying-- so initial evaluation
on November 25, 2016
Posted by: manu
This was a black Friday purchase and based on the reviews of the 50 inch model and looking at the 50" one in the store display, I decided to try this out.
It is mounted on a stand, and used in the bedroom. These are initial reactions.
Packaging -- well packaged and protected
Set up - plugged it in and turned it on. There is a 15 second delay before it shows the banner, and does a software update. From there on the set up was a breeze with Roku updates taking a while, and an initial intro video to provide an overview that could be handy for someone new to Roku
Loaded 100 channels -- this took 5 or 10 minutes, and I will be deleting many of them
PIcture is sharp and clear with more detail, contrast and clarity automatically than my 5 year old LG that cost 3x as much and has 120hz and 47" screen with the same resolution.
The sound is a bit weak - it is clear but increasing the volume a lot has a modest effect on the loudness
Netflix, Time Warner, Hulu and Amazon -- the main services I use, all work well.
Will update the review once we have some hours on the TV, and run into some problems, as I expect we will
My Best Buy number: 0960747182
I would recommend this to a friend!

tv tuner and antenna
November 26, 2016
Hi -- I believe that this TV has a tuner. However, since we are not using the cable or the antenna, and using primarily the Roku feature, I dont know how well the off the air would work. The Roku works very well. I have also hooked up a Sony Blu-Ray that I bought 5 years ago using HDMI and it was setup instantly and automatically once it turned on.
The picture is sharp, bright and the sound is also good -- though I had ordered a sound bar and am waiting for it to arrive
I had compared the display in the store with others, and for the non 4k ones the quality is comparable and once you get it home you are looking directly at this and it is a significant improvement over the 15 year old Olevia 720p I was using in the bedroom, but also over the 5 year old 47" LG that has higher specs than this one that we have in our Movie room. For $249 this is a no-brainer. At the $500 price point, there are many other choices. You may also want to check the TCL 55" 4k on sale in many places for $400 at the moment. That would be the other choice I would think would be good if you want a Roku. There are many 4k 55" ones in that price range, but my sense is that the lower end models of LG, VIzio and Samsung are not better than these not as well known brands

Not Great
By Jaded
This Sharp TV is like others I've used - color and greyscale are hard to calibrate amd blacks are not as deep as other manufacturers. I'm guessing the 5 star "review" that came in conveniently before the TV went on sale for Black Friday is a bogus review authored by Best Buy.
Do a comparison in store - if it's weaknesses are not that important too you, pick it up. My guess is, they won't have one actually set up on display so you can compare,

Interesting comment -- out of the box the calibration is better than the LG I have which I had to calibrate using instructions from the AVSFORUM
Yes, it is not obvious how to use the menu entries to calibrate the tv -- however, the default is very good
blacks are very black and it does not wash out in a bright sunny room

Very good product and good BF price
By Andy
Very good product and very good BF deal price for $250. Although it is not a 4k, but 1080 is good for me. Anyway, i do not need that much resolution either.
Only concern (something unclear) is that the speaker sound is a little too small even though i turn volume to 100 (max.). Not sure there is any way to further turn up the sound?

speaker sound
November 27, 2016
I had the same problem initially, but after an update and a reboot the problem went away
Same thing with closed captions, which were not working initially
I did buy a Samsung Sound bar and while that adds to the richness and volume of sound, the tv itself is generating good sound now

Update on my review
November 29, 2016
Sound problems went away after an update. It works just fine now
Also bought a sound bar, but the TV sound is just fine
Have not figured out how to control the sound bar (Samsung, connected via digital optical) volume from the TV remote, though. Will appreciate pointers
