These episodes are great, the show is reaching its prime at this point (not quite there, but in a season or two IMO) and the laughs abound. Unfortunately the housing of the discs doesn't simply slide out like in the previous seasons. I feel like I'm damaging the box by undoing the side flap and jamming the housing back in. This also causes disc 4 to consistently jump out of its holder. 4 and a half star season, 3 star packaging.

I purchased a grab bag from No Idea Records about a year ago and found myself puzzled by the self-titled Glass & Ashes album. It wasn't my normal style of punk and I really didn't know what to make of the jarring hardcore, but the melody was evident and after a second listen I was hooked. Really hooked.
So I finally picked up their first album, Aesthetic Arrest, and it's about 70% as good at best. Unfortunately these two albums are all they left us with. These songs are great, but the production is muddy compared to the amazing sound on the s/t. Also there's confusion with the track-listing as "Off The Piranha" is split into two tracks - something I wish was clarified a bit better.

Even if you don't own a turntable, consider getting the vinyl version instead, which comes with the CD as a bonus.
I know this probably sounds ridiculous if you have no interest in vinyl or a way to play it, but the vinyl version comes with two more songs and they are on the cd inside the record as well. Those songs are not available on the stand-alone CD, something I wish I had looked into before purchasing.
As for the songs that are on this CD, they're great. One track from "Lifted" and then 4 previously unreleased. A lot of slow-tempo stuff here, along with some guest appearances. The last track is mostly just a noise/instrumental outro - kind of in the vein of the last track on the "Take It Easy/Love Nothing" EP

Heavier and messier songs from what would ultimately become one of the finest songwriters in pop punk. Highly recommended for fans who have The Daily Grind and beyond, but not a good place to start for the average listener.

I've never known what to make of this band. I only have a few other albums and their sound is different in all of them. This one in particular however stood out. It feels like two different bands mashed together to make one album. Close to half of the songs are about being a hopeless romantic, and the remainder are environmental/political/societal complaints. The love songs sound lighter and poppier. The complaint songs are angry and more hardcore. I like both, but the sequencing is confusing and I'm still not sure what to make of it as a whole. Much better than "Comprehensive Guide" however.

As a fan who gravitates more toward the later Rancid albums (minus "Honor Is All We Know" which is their worst by far) I was surprised at how much I enjoyed their debut. Fast, upbeat, lots of fun. Vocals are a lot faster than what they've become in the past decade, and it was hard to keep up reading some of the lyrics.

I'll start out by saying I'm only familiar with the Fat Wreck era of Avail. First I picked up "100 Times" which was a quick burst of excellent hardcore. About a year later I grabbed "One Wrench" which was more of the same, but a bit long, and lacked surprises. Now, finally with "Front Porch Stories" there are some surprises. Tempo changes, instrumental curveballs, a much more varied album. Well worth checking out!
