Great first step into VR
on June 2, 2016
Posted by: DavidJr
If you already have a Samsung Galaxy S6, S7, or Note 5, this is well worth the purchase. It is a great and easy way to be introduced to virtual reality. VR is making huge advances compared to what it used to be and as more applications come out it shows even more what it is capable of. It is amazing how VR can suck you in create feelings that you would figure were impossible unless you were actually moving.
However, there are a lot of issues that need to be addressed. First thing, as many others have stated, is the overheating. There is nothing more fun spoiling than to be 10 minutes into a game to get the pop-up about it overheating. If you choose to continue and ignore it, the game becomes unplayable with 1-4 frames per second refresh. I have purchased the gel packs that some have mentioned and it has helped in extending my gameplay, but it still gets too hot at times especially if the charger is plugged in.
Visually the screen door effect is very obvious and makes the screen look blurry, no matter how much you try to focus. However, once you get engrossed in a game or movie, the effect seems to fade away. This will surely get better as screens increase in their resolution and pixels per inch and you have to remember that you are looking at your phone really really close.
Game prices are rather steep compared to other phone related games. I understand that they are more involved that your typical phone based game. However, I hate to pay $5.99 for an app only to find out that it is about 10 minutes worth of entertainment with no replay value. I do like how some of them have gone “free” with in-game purchases to get the full version if you find it worthy.
It is hard to enjoy VR with others. Using Chromecast to mirror the screen to a TV looked very promising, until I found out that it cast the sound to the TV and not the headphones. Then, after about 5 seconds in the game, the video would freeze for external viewers but continue for the player. No matter the setting I tried, Chromecast would not work for me and my Note 5. I ended up purchasing MirrorOp, which is pricy app, but has made screen mirroring run really smooth, keep the sound in the headphones for the player, and really allowed the external viewers to enjoy the show and “mess” with the player.
Having a Bluetooth controller is only required for a few games. Most of them can be controlled with the side touchpad, which once you get used to how touchy it is, works well. However, keeping my arm bent beside my head gets tiring quickly. If you already play controller based video games, having a Bluetooth controller is only natural. The button placement on most of them is very similar to what you would already be used to so they are familiar and easy to use. Having a controller also unlocks some features in apps that you don’t “need” a controller for, such as moving seats in the theater.
Sitting in a swivel chair is the easiest way to play. Standing is always an option, but ensure the environment is clear around you and you are able to control vertigo. Some applications allow you to re-center the image, but most lock in the moment you activate the proximity sensor, which could happen from thumb placement or the head strap getting too close. Most of the time, taking it off and then putting it back on in the direction you want to face will re-center it as well. I do wish that some applications would let you force the center so that you could sit back and relax while playing and not forced to sit upright the entire time.
There is a fair amount of material out there under the Samsung/Gear VR store, however, Google Cardboard already has so much material available. The Gear VR will not let you play that material by default, however, there is an app that can help with that as well. That app essentially helps unlock more potential for the device. Some of it does not play as smoothly as the material made to run with Oculus, but still gives more options.
Overall I feel it was well worth it. I have almost contemplated buying myself a new phone so that I could leave my Note 5 as a dedicated VR screen, but then I realize that I don’t use it that much, especially since the novelty of it has worn down a bit. If only Samsung incorporated a cooling method for the phone I would have rated this higher.

Simply Amazing!
on May 26, 2016

The LG OLED65E6P is simply an amazing TV. Amazingly thin, super contrast, bright colors and loads of features. I had personally been holding out on the 2015 models due to HDR and Dolby Vision not being supported, though I still wanted them due to their picture quality. Once I saw the videos out of the CES, I was sold on the new model. Everything they talked about in those videos is evident in the 2016 version.
Pencil thin is no joke. The main portion of the TV is 2 panes of glass thick. It looks amazing, but this is the one thing that scares me most about this TV. All I can imagine is someone grabbing the TV from the top corner to rotate it out and the screen shattering from being twisted. It feels as if the glass is tempered, but still has some play to it that makes it feel flimsy enough to break easily. I’m not going to test this theory and will stick to grabbing it from the speaker base.
I have been in the market for a new TV for a couple of years now and have been constantly checking out the new model TVs every chance I get. I have yet to see one as thin as this and with such an amazing picture. There is no comparison to how deep the blacks are on this TV. At times, when screens are transitioning, you may think that the TV completely turned off, because essentially it did as the pixels are off.
I don’t have a 4K Blu-ray player, however, I have found some 4K digital media and when played from a hard drive or thumb drive directly connected to the TV it plays them flawlessly. These files were in various formats as well, to include .ts, .mkv, .mp4, and .avi, in which they all played well. Several of the available apps also have 4K media for streaming, though some don’t compare to the quality of the downloaded media.
Passive 3D is the way to go and the way it works with this TV is perfect. No matter where I went in my house, which has an open concept, I was able to see 3D. I usually get a slight eye strain headache when watching 3D in theaters, however I have not felt it with this TV. The clarity is so perfect that the 3D seems to pop even more than I recall seeing in theaters. When watching 3D you can see it pretty well from just about any side angle, so long as the TV is at eye level. However, if you are looking up or down at the TV there is some crosstalk, so if you are mounting the TV high, 3D will not work well for you.
The 3D settings allow for side by side or top bottom sources, but it also has a 2D to 3D feature that is rather interesting. It is not perfect, as some things seem to pop out at layers they shouldn’t be, but it does add a 3D perspective to just about anything. Some “3D” games that aren’t actually 3D supported can now look 3D with this setting.
Dual Play is another feature that uses the 3D technology to allow for split screen games to play full screen. It is a really interesting concept, however, the image becomes stretched and slightly distorted to essentially take half a screen and fill it to full screen. I hope that they can take this concept further and possibly make it so that you could have 2 inputs on the same TV yet only viewed with a set of the single polarized glasses. Imagine playing a game on 65 inches while others in the room watch their favorite TV show.
I have a home theater sound system so I only used the built in audio briefly. However, I was surprised by the depth of the sound from the built in speakers. My receiver is not 4K capable, so I have my HDMI sources plugged directly to the TV and optical out to the receiver. So far, all the formats I have thrown at it seem to be passed through just fine. The sound bar is also the thickest part of the TV in which the very slim base snaps and screws into.
The sound bar is not detachable, nor does it fold back like the G6, but I feel it looks great with the TV. One point that may vary in opinion from person to person is what you think about how close the base sits to the surface in which it is sitting on. It is so low profile that nothing will fit under the edge of the TV. Where I had a thin USB drive hooked up, and the TV perfectly fitting my entertainment system, I can’t run it out under the TV as I did on a different model. Though, having no space there makes the TV look like part of the entertainment stand.
Another slight annoyance for me is that the HDMI inputs are on the back, facing the side, only a few inches in. This does make them easy to reach, however, for thick HDMI cables, this does not allow them room to bend behind the TV. So, they can be seen sticking out the side of the TV. If they had been a bit further back or on the top of the component area they would have been perfect for larger cables, providing for that hidden streamline look.
Web OS 3.0 and the magic remote are easy to use and provide for a whole lot of functionality. Everything I have ran through it so far has ran flawlessly. Changing between inputs or applications is quick and easy. I don’t know if it is a feature I have not located yet or if it is missing, but I wish there was an easier way to reset center for the pointer and to hide the pointer. Sometimes I find myself waving the remote off at an odd angle to get across the screen and then the big pink pointer lingers on the screen a bit too long at times, especially if bumped once I set it down. However, for the most part it is point and click on everything.
I hope with everything in this TV that it will last many years with upcoming technology. It is certainly supporting everything that you can throw at it for now.

Not worth the price in my opinion

Best thing going for them is that they are truly, completely wireless, when connected to the XBOX One. It has good sound quality, noise cancellation works well, and you can do a lot with them. I was listening to game audio, game chat, cell phone audio, and laptop all at the same time. It was a bit much, but I wanted to see it happen.
Being completely wireless while hooked up to a phone you can take that call without having to leave the game and miss out on what your friends are saying, but the mic is taken by the phone for the duration of the call. Plus, with noise cancellation and the very tight fit, you pretty much hear nothing around you while playing. The DTS surround function worked for the most part, but was not as true or precise as having a home surround sound system. As they do fit really tight, in order to have nice noise cancellation, they did cause me to have a bit of ear discomfort and eventual sweating. Occasional breaks were required.
The phone app is kind of essential for these headphones as there are a ton of presets and it is easier to select the presets through it as well as adjust each volume set.
The bad side is that it has a ton of presets and no personal EQ function. Some presets, like footsteps or super human hearing will distort all other sounds, like background music. Another down side is how easy it is to bump the side of the headphones and change the preset. Then, if not using the app, you have to cycle through each preset (4-6 options depending on the category), interrupting all audio in the process. There is not lock button and this was probably the most annoying thing for me as I have a plush couch. If I leaned back into it I was either changing the preset (back right button) or starting Bluetooth phone audio (back left button). I even accidentally placed a call with a double tap of the Bluetooth button (back left).
These headphones connect to the XBOX One via USB and TOSLink fiber optic cable and require a specific setting in order to work, it is provided in the directions. However, with that, they will work with no other system, as I tried on my home receiver and TV. But, you can get stereo audio through Bluetooth from anything supporting Bluetooth, or wired with option 3.5mm cable.
The final breaking point for me might not have been issues with the headphones themselves, but I kept having different disconnect issues with the XBOX One. Sometimes the mic would drop where I couldn't talk to the party or the party would drop out where they could hear me, but I couldn't hear them. Cycling power on the headphones, re-assigning the XBOX profile, or pulling the USB cable from the transmit station were possible fix actions, but going through all of that in the middle of a game is frustrating. I just feel that spending this much on a set of headphones and having to troubleshoot them like this is not worth it.

Lightweight but not for me.

I have a friend that had the older version of these headphones and was always giving them praise. I read some reviews that made these headphones look amazing. However, they did not meet my expectations.
Like some others stated, directions on these are very limited in the package, with a few pictures as if it were hieroglyphs. There are also no markings as to which ear bud is right or left, but in the online manual they point out that the controls are the right. The only thing is, if you want to wear them over the ear instead of under, you have to swap sides, so actual stereo effects will be inverse. The sound on them was clear and full range. However, to me it sounded soft, as if it had active noise cancelation, which they do not. The choice of ear tips was nice. I personally liked the added sound isolation of the Comply ear tips and they were comfortable for longer wear.
The controls are very simple, yet were a bit frustrating. There are only 3 buttons, which is nice to an extent, however, they are limited on what they do. A tap of the volume increased the volume of the headset, not my phone, so to get maximum volume, I had to turn both of them up individually. There is no feedback on when the button was pressed, but it does beep at maximum. The center button works fine for play/pause and answer/disconnect calls, however, I could not tell when a call was ended. There was no feedback, everything would just be silent. The center button has to be held for 2 seconds to activate the mic, though if you hold it for 4 seconds it powers off. So, any delay in the microphone leads to turning your headphones off. I’m used to another set where double tap activated the microphone for voice control, but on this one it is redial. I redialed a few people multiple times cause of that.
I wanted to have these around my neck at work, so that I can listen to music from time to time and take calls easily, but mostly in a single ear. However, if you are not using them in both ears, any movement will make them fall to one side or the other, pulling it backwards out of the one ear in use. If you are leaving them in both ears at all times that you use them, they are great and lightweight. If wearing them for mostly music during activity, in both ears, I think I would keep these, but for my on and off use, these were not for me.

Take advantage of refer-a-friend

With the recent sales, the Legendary Edition is the only way to go. You get over $130 worth of content in one package, plus future updates. The game is loads of fun, especially if you have friends to play with.
If you have friends that are interested, but haven't started playing Destiny:The Taken King, now is the time to get onto Bungie's website and refer them (must be refereed within 7 days of starting the game). You both get in game items as well as bonus experience as you play together, making leveling a breeze.
The down side to this game is that it is online only, there is no offline content. After a while, the game becomes really repetitive and the high end content requires 6 players. It is a great way to meet new players, but at the same time can make you beat your head on the wall. It does feel rewarding though when 6 complete strangers can take down the various raid bosses.
If you like first person shooters with the rewards of a MMORPG, this is certainly a game for you.

It's all in how you play
on December 8, 2015

If you are the type of player that just wants to get through the story of a game, then this is probably not a game for you. If you like exploring, read extra content, and hording lots of junk, then this game is perfect for you.
Many hours of gameplay, interesting story and a companion to keep you company, or tick you off. With the map having many real resemblances to the Boston area, and a twist to real world events, it can really get you thinking at times if that is how people will talk of stuff 260+ years in the future. Being played first person or third person, melee or sneaky sniper, friendly or aggressive, you can pretty much play how you want to play. You can also use your smartphone/tablet as your real life Pipboy. Allowing you to controlling inventory, track quests, and view the map. It is also great for showing off your stats and talking about missions with friends.
The only down side is that you can't play with real friends. Being able to build amazing settlements and gain loads of followers, just no one real to share it with. I really wish they would have had at least a co-op option. There are so many ways they could have gone about it and it would have influenced other friends into buying it, but sadly it is not there.

Very unhappy about not getting the GearVR programs
By Sunshower
I tried many different ways to find out how to download the Gear VR programs by going to Samsung and Oculus online. All unsuccessful!!
June 3, 2016
Once you connect the Gear VR to the phone it starts a download for the software. There appears to be no other way to initiate the install. Once the Oculus software is installed, games and applications can be purchased through the application or from inside the store while wearing the device.

Need certain phones to use this.
By Donna
Wasn't told at time of purchase that certain phones were required to use this device. After purchase was when this was discovered. During this time we purchased a new home and was moving. After the move, tried to return the item because I didn't want to purchase a new phone. The only way the store would accept this return was to give me a gift card. I didn't want a gift card that I would most likely not use. Not happy with this policy at all. Also have made posts to FB in regards to your policy. I will not EVER enter your store again or make another purchase from you online. This is NOT how you treat a customer and expect more business from them.
It is labeled on the box and the site details

It says on the front and back of the box, "Compatible with Note5/S6 edge+/S6/S6 edge" and anywhere you look online it says it as well.

Ethernet Cables

I'm wanting to connect my DVD player to the internet. I can't afford the manufacturer's adapter. I have a broadband router, but I need cables for it. At least 25' from the wall outlet to the router. Trying to look on-line, there seem to be different types of cables. I'm a little technologicially challenged... Well, geographically too... The router is a Cicso/Linksys wireless G broadband router, Model WRT546 version 6. I've seen prices from $50 on down to $10. I'm worried that I'll wind up with the wrong type of cable. What's the best price for a 25' (or 35') cable? I'll need several shorter ones as well - to connect the DVD player, the Wii... Thank you!!!!!!!
Any Cat 5e Ethernet cable will work for a typical home router connection. If there are any major power cables that you cross over in that 25 feet you may want to look at the STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) as opposed to UTP (Unshielded). However, for the most part CAT 5E UTP will work just fine for connecting your device to the router so long as it has an Ethernet port.

Can these headphones be rinsed off in the sink after a workout?

They are listed as "LIFETIME WARRANTY AGAINST SWEAT," not water. You can remove the ear tips and wash them and wipe the headphones with a damp cloth just fine, but you are at your own risk if putting them under the faucet.

Stay tuned in on the go with these Sol Republic Shadow 1140-04 earbud headphones, which feature wireless technology and a long-lasting battery, so you can listen to music or talk on the phone using Bluetooth for up to 8 hours before recharging.

will these fall off of me when ih ave them plugged in because they are just hanging on my next?

will they slide off or fall off while maybe running or walking?
If not in both ears and no collar to hold them, they slid around a lot on me. When in only one ear, the other side will pull against you, especially if turning your head and can lead to pulling out the other earbud at times.
