A New Masterpiece!

Stevie Nicks’ first album of new material in a decade, “In Your Dreams”, is among the best things she’s done. It’s not like her other albums in any way and that’s what makes it so great. It’s a whole different sound for Stevie. Some artist go off and do “theme” albums, be it a dance album or in the 70’s for instance everyone did a disco album at some point. And that’s what this is for me, a total change of pace. It can’t be compared to her previous albums because it’s nothing like those albums. “In Your Dreams” is a breath of brand new air from Stevie. I’ve always felt that “Bella Donna” was Stevie’s masterpiece, and it remains so, but “In Your Dreams” is also a masterpiece but painted in a very different style with very different colors. The stand out tracks are:
“In Your Dreams” ~ I have a feeling Stevie really likes this song and I bet this ends up in the set this summer. It’s just one of those fast up tempo songs that she likes doing on stage.
“New Orleans” ~ Starts off slow, but then the chorus kicks in and it blooms.
“Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream)” ~ This is where the album kicks in for me. The beginning is taken from an old demo fans have had for years called “Lady From The Mountain” and she sings it almost exactly like the demo in the whisper like voice. She’s turned a lot of older beloved demos into full-fledged songs lately and some of them didn’t work, “Smile At You”, “Goodbye Baby”, but this one does. The new lyrics added to the original track really complete and fit the song.
“Annabel Lee” ~ This was demo’d for 2001’s “Trouble In Shangri-La” but didn’t make the cut. Music by Stevie, lyrics based on the poem By Edgar Allan Poe. Stevie and Poe seem to be a match made in heaven.
“Soldier’s Angel” ~ First thought was this was another “Desert Angel” but this is much better. Lindsey’s sparse, cold guitar and vocals just nail this song. This isn’t supposed to be a happy song, it’s dark, depressing, cold, and empty. It’s a perfect example of music and subject matter being perfectly matched. Not a song that everyone will like, but the song is almost like a slap in the face. Stevie makes her point beautifully.
“Ghosts Are Gone” ~ This would be a perfect song to open her show with. This is one of those songs that you cannot sit still and just listen to.
““Italian Summer” ~ The big lush strings at the start are a switch for Stevie. Another nice touch are the Beach Boy-esque background “aahh ahhh’s” Again the music fits the lyric and you feel like you’re out there with her looking out over the ocean at the islands. And that final note? Who knew Stevie had that in her!!??
“Cheaper Than Free” ~ A simple country song with very thought provoking lyrics.
Stevie is back and better than ever on “In Your Dreams”. Longtime fans will love this album, casual fans may need some time to digest it. It’s a different sound for Stevie, but still unmistakably Stevie.
What's great about it: A whole new sound for Stevie!
I would recommend this to a friend!
