Great New Bluetooth Speaker!
on April 17, 2024
Posted by: Dreemer1961
The new Sony ULT Field 1 Bluetooth speaker is Sony Corporation's new entry into the crowded arena of small portable Bluetooth speakers. Is it worthy of your consideration?
Sound: This speaker packs quite a punch for it's size. The ULT sound button increases the bass response of the Field 1 quite a bit, but not at the cost of decreased treble. I think it has a very pleasing sound quality, especially at lower to mid volume levels. The bass response is slightly reduced at higher volumes, which is pretty typical of all small speakers.
Build Quality: The design and construction seems to be well done and this speaker should be able to stand up to the stress of daily use quite well. The two side mounted passive radiators are protected by solid feeling endcaps, which I believe are rubber coated. I like that the included sturdy strap is removable if desired. I don't plan to get this speaker wet, but it's nice to know that it is protected from accidental spills and drops.
Sony app: This speaker doesn't require an app for connecting to a phone or tablet, but the Sony Music Center app is helpful for firmware updates and for it's equalizer function. By the way, connecting was simple, with no issues for me. The Bluetooth seems fine. I have not experienced any sound dropouts or lost connection issues around my apartment.
Call quality: No dropouts, but slightly muffled. I would call it fine overall. No problems in conversation.
Things I don't like: Mono speakers are not my preference, but I still like this speaker since it can be positioned upright and horizontally with no difference in the sound. I do plan to purchase another of the ULT Field 1 to make a stereo pair in the near future.
Conclusion: Would I recommend this speaker? The answer is a definite yes. If you are looking for a portable Bluetooth speaker that pack a bass punch above it's weight class, then I believe you won't be disappointed with the Sony ULT Field 1.

A Fine Audio Choice
on January 31, 2024
Posted by: Dreemer1961
The JBL Authentics 300 Bluetooth/Wifi speaker is an interesting new choice in the area of portable audio devices. The design is a nice retro style, and the build quality is very good. The speaker is solidly built and quite hefty. I have not noticed any distortion of the sound or loose construction at all. I really like the gold trimmed accents this speaker has.
As for sound quality I find the 300 a fine sounding speaker. It is loud enough to easily fill my entire apartment with sound, and the bass response is very good, without being too overwhelming of the other frequencies. The treble is crisp, but not harsh or annoying. It does play at a higher volume when plugged in to AC power, and I also noticed that the volume was somewhat reduced when the internal battery went below the 40% level. I noticed a difference in sound in Bluetooth versus WiFi modes, which is to be expected. Not that Bluetooth mode sounds bad by any means, but I noticed some increased stereo separation and sound clarity when steaming in WiFi. The differences are noticeable.
The one area I find lacking is the JBL One app that is used to control the Authentics 300. The app worked flawlessly with my iPad, but with my android phone, I could not get the speaker to connect via WiFi after many attempts. The app has since been updated, and now works with my phone. The 3 band equalizer could use some refining with more bands, but at least we have something to work with.
Overall the JBL Authentics 300 is a fine choice for its retro styling and great sound.

Surface Pro 9 is Excellent Tablet Choice
on November 19, 2022
Posted by: Dreemer1961
Let me begin this review of the Surface Pro 9 with my initial impression of the packaging and appearance of the device. The packaging is typical of other Microsoft products that I have had, and by that I mean it was very good. The box was sturdy, and not damaged in any way, and neither was the tablet. No parts were missing or damaged. I saw no scratches, dents or other surface (no pun intended) problems. There are no dead or stuck pixels.
I have to state here, that any comparisons that I make to this device, are made in relation to the Surface Pro 7 that I also own. I believe this new Pro 9 is a very nice and worthy upgrade to the Pro 7. I really like the large 13 inch screen real estate, with its great image quality, high brightness, and 120Hz refresh rate (which by the way was set to 60Hz initially). The speaker quality is excellent, with good clarity and punchy bass. The volume is good and somewhat higher than most tablets. On the slight negative side, there is no headphone jack, which is very common with much of todays high end tablets and phones.
The initial device set up procedure, including Windows and app updates was completed in about an hour and 15 minutes. Later, I transferred approximately 75Gb of data including MP3s, videos, and photos and this was done in about an hour.
My normal use for the Pro 9 consists of internet browsing, YouTube and other streaming video and music services, viewing and editing photos, listening to MP3s, etc. I am a casual gamer, and I am a non-professional, retired individual. I say this to let you know that I believe that most users will find the Surface Pro 9 an extremely fast, smooth performer and capable of most anything the average person needs.

A Really Nice Combo
on November 19, 2022
Posted by: Dreemer1961
The Microsoft Surface Pro Signature Keyboard and Slim Pen 2 make the perfect combo for the new Surface Pro 9. I mainly use my Pro 9 as a tablet, and I don't often use the keyboard, but when I do, as I am now to write this
review, I can't find any flaws to report. It does what it is supposed to do and does it very well.
Pros: 1. The keyboard seems well constructed and sturdy, with no flexing with normal use.
2. It is backlit.
3. It has all the necessary function keys and a dedicated row of number keys.
4. I like the look and the feel of the Alcantara fabric.
5. The keyboard has built in charging and storage for the Slim Pen 2.
Cons: No serious flaws that I can find.
Now, speaking of the Slim Pen 2, I thought at first I would not like it because it is a different shape from any stylus I have used previously, but I find that I actually like it very much. I like the plastic build of the pen and prefer it over the slick, cold metal of the older Surface Pen. The new pen's compatibility is very good, as I can use it with my Surface Go 3, and even with my Samsung Flex 2 Alpha laptop. The keyboard's ingenious charging/storage slot is great as well.

Surface Go 3 + Windows 11= Good Tablet Experience
on October 22, 2021
Posted by: Dreemer1961
from Lexington, KY, USA
The Microsoft Surface Go 3 with the just released new Windows 11 make a surprisingly good team and add up to pretty good tablet overall. Note that the Go 3 is using Windows 11 in “S mode” which only allows the use of apps obtained from the Microsoft Store, so if you will need other apps you must switch to Windows 11 Home (or Windows 11 Pro at extra cost.) I plan to leave the Go in S mode, but the option will be available if my plans change.
My initial impressions of the Go 3 are that it is a well made device and it arrived in perfect condition with no physical flaws that I can find. I like the size, weight and overall feel of the device. It powered on quickly and arrived with a 50% charge, and of course downloaded the latest updates and the initial set up was easy.
In my use, which consists of web browsing, video watching, listening to music, browsing through my photos and other basic tasks I got about 5 hours of screen on time, with about 30 hours of stand-by (which caused a minimal power drain) before the device powered off. This is a below average battery life in my opinion, and is this device’s major drawback. Charge time from zero to full charge was about 2 1/2 hours using the included Microsoft Connect charger. The Go 3 is capable of charging via the USB C port, and I used a 45 watt charger and got a full charge in just over 2 hours. A zero to 50% charge took about 70 min versus 40 min with USB C charger.
I would rate the screen as very good. It is bright, crisp and has good viewing angles. The dual front-firing speakers are very good as well. The inclusion of a headphone jack and Micro SD card slot, which are rapidly disappearing in most devices, is very much appreciated. As for general performance, the Go 3 is good, but slightly laggy, and jittery when browsing photos, or websites with a lot of photo content. I am not a gamer so I can’t really comment on that aspect.
In summary I like the Surface Go 3 quite a lot and I think it is a capable tablet. If you are looking for a device to replace a laptop, I would recommend looking at the Surface Pro model, but if you want a good tablet experience, the Surface Go 3 is a fine choice.

Great Sounding, Full Featured Headphones
on August 19, 2020
Posted by: Dreemer1961
from Lexington, KY, USA
The new Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones (I'll call them M4 for short) are the latest (and greatest) in the Sony noise canceling, over the ear lineup. The M4's are packed with high tech features that actually enhance the listening experience. The most important aspect of any set of headphones is their sound, and in this area the M4's excel. The M4's are absolutely the best sounding headphones I have ever owned. The bass response is good, without overwhelming the rest of the sound. Treble is clean and natural, and the soundstage is quite wide and detailed. I believe that the vast majority of buyers will love the sound of the M4's.
As for other features, I use the DSEE Extreme, and the LDAC codec, and they do seem to improve the quality of most music tracks. I haven't used the 360 Reality Audio feature. It sounds interesting, but requires one of three music streaming services, none of which I use (the M4's come with a 3 month free trial to one service, so I may try one out later.)
Another main feature of the M4's is noise canceling and it works quite well, and I don't feel any pressure on my ears, as with some other headphones that have this feature. That brings me to talk about the wear comfort of these headphones. My longest listening session was about 2 and 1/2 hours without removing the M4's and I experienced no pain or discomfort at all.
The touch controls on the right panel have worked flawlessly so far, and are easy to learn. The call quality is also very good. At least one person I spoke with couldn't believe that I was calling with a set of headphones and not actually using my phone. These are the only headphones I would use regularly for calling.
Now, I must come to the only complaint I have with the M4's. Set up of the M4's using my android phone (and tablet as well) and the Sony Headphones Connect app was easy, and it worked the first time. However, using my iPad Pro (2018 model, on iPad OS 13.6.1) the app would not complete the set up process, so I am unable to use some of the features of the M4's on my iPad. The touch controls, including activating Siri, do work so the M4's still sound okay, but could be better. That's about all I have to say about the M4's, but I can overwhelming recommend the headphones to everyone.

Really Nice Earphones
on December 19, 2019
Posted by: Dreemer1961
from Lexington, KY, USA
The Master and Dynamic MW07 Plus earphones' most outstanding features are great sound and solid quality construction. The words that come to mind to describe the sound are clear and crisp, with clean bass, and very good treble response. These are the only earphones I own that do not require any equalizer tweaking. To me they sound best (and loudest) at the flat or off setting. As far as wearing comfort, I have had several fairly long listening sessions of two or more hours, and I find them to be above average; not the most comfortable, but close. I have had no connection issues of any kind and I saw no video lag. Now as to negatives, in my opinion the active noise cancellation offered by these earphones has only minimal effectiveness, therefore I simply leave it off. This increases the battery life somewhat, which is excellent, by the way. I generally see about 10% battery drain per hour. The beautiful case is a nice extra touch. I am old school in that I use earphones for music and video playback almost exclusively, so I can't really comment on call quality. In conclusion, I feel that if music reproduction is your primary concern, these are an excellent choice.

Good Antenna for Indoors
on May 9, 2019
Posted by: Dreemer1961
from Lexington, KY, USA
This product is a decent antenna for indoor use as it picks up all of the local channels at my location. I was hoping that it could receive a fringe station or two, but it does not. I cannot find fault with it since of course reception is affected by many factors that are beyond its control, however I must rate it as average since I already have an older antenna that receives the same stations. If you need a new indoor antenna I would recommend it since it performs as advertised and the set up was very easy.

Good 1st Smartwatch For Me
on September 10, 2018
Posted by: Dreemer1961
from Lexington, KY, USA
This review is for the Samsung Galaxy Watch black 42mm model, which is the watch that I actually received. In general, most of my conclusions should apply to the larger model as well, since they are essentially the same except for their physical dimensions, and battery capacity.
As the review summary above states, the Galaxy Watch is the first smartwatch that I have owned, therefore I have no prior experience with which to compare but I can state that so far I have no huge complaints about this watch. I use a Galaxy Note 8 as my main phone and pairing it to the Galaxy Watch was simply a matter of downloading the Samsung Wearable app, turning my phone’s Bluetooth, and powering up the watch. The entire process took only seconds. I also downloaded the full user manual from the Samsung website, as the watch comes with a Quick Start Guide only.
Being a first time smartwatch owner, I am pretty amazed by all the capabilities of this device. It seems to be quite fast and smooth in operation. I have really only one complaint so far and that would be the Galaxy Watch’s battery life. I believe it is stated as being up to six days which is unrealistic for a typical watch user (as I believe I am). I keep my Bluetooth always connected and the Always On Display set to off, the heart monitor set to every 10 minutes, and I am getting around two days of battery life. However, the 46 mm model having a larger battery, the life would be more like four days, I presume.
As far as looks and feel go, I prefer this round watch, as opposed to the more square type such as the Apple Watch, and I also like the bezel control as well. This watch feels substantial but not too much weight to be uncomfortable for long periods of wear. I tend to only remove my watch to shower (even though it is waterproof of course) and to charge the battery, and I find it very comfortable. In general, if you are thinking of purchasing the Samsung Galaxy Watch, I would recommend it highly.

Building on the multi award winning D-M40, the all-in-one D-M41 features improved sound, style and facilities. The newly developed discrete analogue amplifier circuit reduces signal paths for greater clarity and an audio reproduction that is faithful to the original performance, while the new Bluetooth implementation combines convenience with an off switch to reduce its influence on the sound of other sources when not in use. The compact home theater system consists of the RCD-M41 center unit with digital optical inputs to hook up a TV, set top box or other digital gear that deserves improved audio quality, and has built in CD plus FM/AM radio, with the new SC-M41 speaker system to complement the CD receiver's performance.

A fine compact sound system
on July 11, 2018
Posted by: Dreemer1961
from Lexington, KY, USA
This is my review of the Denon D-M41S Personal Component System. My first impression out of the box is the weight of this little audio system. It is quite substantial given the small size. It gives the impression of extremely solid, fine construction. Set-up of the Denon system is simple, following the instructions of the Quick Set-Up Guide. The full Owner’s Manual is available for download from the Denon USA website (it also comes on disc with the unit accessories.)
Of course the most important part of an audio system is the quality of the sound that it provides and the Denon exceeds expectations here. The sound is loud and clean with no distortion or rattles. The bass response of the included speakers is good and they actually have good presence despite their small stature. (An optional subwoofer is available if you want a more floor rattling sound.) The volume of sound is more than adequate for my small apartment.
I have tested all of the features of the Denon system (read the manual, there a quite a few of them) and they all work well. Bluetooth pairing was easy and I had no problems maintaining a good signal with my phone in my pocket all around my apartment. This system even has a built in headphone amplifier setting in case you use a set of high impedance headphones. In conclusion, if you are looking for a compact audio system with quality sound, I don’t believe you need look any further than the Denon M-41S.
Note: for the purposes of full disclosure, I feel I must state that the first unit I received from Denon did not operate at all, however it was quickly replaced and the second unit that I was sent has functioned flawlessly.

One of my biggest pet peeves with headphones I have had is that I cannot charge them while I am using them. Can these be charged while in use so I don't have to interrupt what I'm listening to?

You can listen while charging if you use the headphones by wire, Bluetooth wireless mode does not work, however .

Will you still have to choose between sound quality/DSEE and stable connection (to use equalizer)?

The DSEE feature can be used with either setting on the new XM4's.
