Fan Noise Solved
on December 1, 2016
Posted by: Eric
Bought this on Black Friday and immediately noticed the fan was very loud compared to other laptops I have owned. After several days, I decided to return it before I spent more time loading software, doc, photos, etc. Before doing so I searched for a solution. I found the guidance below in a forum and it greatly reduced the problem. Go into power options.
Click "Change plan settings" of which ever power plan you use.
Select "Change advanced power settings."
Expand "Processor power management."
Expand "System cooling policy."
Change "On battery" and "Plugged in" to "Passive."
For added measure, you can lower the "Maximum processor state" "On battery" and "Plugged in" to 75% and 90%, respectively.
The fan will still blow, but with much less intensity.
My Best Buy number: 2720101955
I would recommend this to a friend!

Some downsides, but it's not horrible.

I got this during Black Friday for $699. I've only been using it for a day now, but there already some things I like and dislike. I did read the reviews before purchasing, and here are some things I would've like to know before buying:
- The brightness on the screen isn't that bright. I had my old laptop next to this one, and realized my screen on the old one was a lot whiter and brighter. I tried to adjust the settings on the HP but brightness is at its highest, so that's just how it is. It's not SO dark that you can't sit outside with it, but just keep in mind it's not AS bright as other laptops, and will take some getting used to.
- The keyboard is almost too flat. This probably won't be a big deal for some, but it's just bothersome for me, because the keys on my former laptop were a lot higher. The keys on this are extremely thin.
- The fan is loud. The CoolSense aspect is cool, it does keep the laptop from overheating (from what I've seen thus far) but the fan just whirls so much, and I've done nothing! Two tabs open on Google Chrome, and the fan was just going and going and going. It's not extremely loud, but if you want to use it in class or something along those lines, it'll probably bring some attention.
- Only has two normal-sized USB ports. I'm sure the specs say this, I should have paid more attention.
- The webcam quality isn't the best. It's not terrible, most likely good enough for video-chatting and the like. But if you're looking to make great HQ videos for YouTube with solely your webcam, I don't think the one on this one is your best bet. I own the Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920, so it won't be a problem for me, but for a device that retails at $900 plus tax, I was expecting the webcam to be of better quality. I won't comment on the mic quality because that can be adjusted.
- The touchpad could be better. It's my least favorite feature. I don't know if it's just my laptop or it's a normal HP feat (this is my first HP device) but christ, you have to right and left click hard for the action to take place. I find myself pressing right click and nothing happens, so I have to press a lot more firmly. I don't like this because it's just- why do I need to put in all that effort to click? I just want to mindlessly hit my finger on it and have it click, but I have to actually focus and make sure I click hard enough. I'm sure in time I'll get used to it and firmly press without thinking about it, but for now, it's bothersome. Also sometimes when you right click, the pointer jumps forward and back a little. It's done that a few times before actually doing what I wanted it to. I can manage, but it has been frustrating to deal with. Also don't like how slow the speed is. I have the speed settings set to fastest, but I still feel like it's not fast enough.
Those're some downsides I've noticed while using so far, but everyone is different so what I don't like, you might love or not even care about. I will say that it's fast and I'm grateful for the 16GB memory + ample space on the hard drive. It's a very thin laptop with a sleek, modern design. The HD videos look great on this, and it plays 4K videos extremely well. Not choppy at all the way my last laptop did. As far as the sound goes, I'm no tech expert but it seems great to me. I'm currently playing music as we speak, and the sound is crisp and loud. Could be louder, of course, but that's just me being greedy.
All-in-all, it is a good laptop. Much better than the Toshiba laptop I previously owned, and although there are some things I already am not crazy about, I don't regret this purchase. I'll be using it for college papers, playing the Sims 4, and streaming movies/browsing the net.
