Plastic Set Screws Don't Hold

I just purchased a set of these stands based on my previous experience with them a few years back, hence the 2 Stars vs. 1 Star. The new set, unlike the older set, won't stay at the set height.

During assembly they seemed fine, and stayed at the fully extended height, but once I placed a set of small Boston Acoustics Surround Speakers on them, they slid all they way down. When I tried to tighten the set screw, it stripped, so both stands sit at the lowest height, where as the original set still stay at the fully extended height and are holding up the same sized speaker.

Did the quality of these stands change in the last few years?
