Great Router! Best 5Ghz Signal I have ever had.
on January 26, 2016
Posted by: SandraZ
I will start by saying I am a network expert - over 25 years now. I purchased this router because my 3 year old Cisco/Linksys 3500 started dropping wifi connections and slowing way down.. I didn't even believe it was slowing down on it's own until I pulled some packet captures and saw for myself. Needless to say, any lag in my home network affects my ability to work from home and of course my kid's gaming. Once I realized the problem was with my router and not any one device, I bought the ASUS. I chose ASUS because we build my son's high end gaming PC with an ASUS motherboard and they have good customer support.
My basic requirements were strong signal and in turn, more bandwidth. The "no-latency streaming" is a great marketing bit but it really does come down to signal strength and bandwidth. While I only have about 25Mbps on the download with my cable modem - this router does do a terrific job of obscuring that from the user - it's is far more responsive (faster) than my previous router.
Also - 5Ghz signal will ALWAYS be shorter range than 2.4Ghz but I get a great signal in the farthest upstairs bedroom (800mbps) - that's with adapters that support 802.11ac - also note that the "high speeds" up to 3500Mbps are kind of a marketing thing - you have to bond two channels together and many adapters don't support. I usually take the advertised BW for the 802.11ac 5Ghz channel, in this case ~1700mbps (see box picture I am uploading) and cut it in half because all my machines live in the "real world" :) I might test channel bonding at some point.
I get a strong 300mbps on my 802.11n machines. I have a 3500 sq foot house not including basement. I have not tested yet to see if I can get signal from outside yet... through the brick front.
For the user that had issues with 5Ghz signal - please check your adapter. I purchased a 802.11ac usb adapter that didn't even SEE the 5Ghz upstairs.. so you need to be sure of quality on both ends. Also, just a note about the person who had issues with mac-filtering. Not really a good idea on wifi - it's not really secure at all to those who can snoop wifi. WPA/WPA2 with a strong password is your best bet.
NOTE: about the WTFast subscription/technology - tried it and we were not happy. Not sure if we configured it wrong or what but when my son complained of lag I turned it off. I am not taking a star off for it because it's not ASUS's tech and it doesn't affect my satisfaction with the router.
Have not tested adaptive QoS yet either.. it's working really well and all my devices that support 5Ghz get at least 3 out of 5 bars and great bandwidth. previously those devices couldn't get enough 5Ghz signal to connect.
So Yes, very good router, strong signal, great response (so far) and I have gaming PCs, Game consoles, 4K streamers, directv whole home, Roku, home automation, smartphones and tablets.
Cheers

Best Sound Cancelling Tech EVER
on February 25, 2015
Posted by: SandraZ
These are the absolute BEST sound canceling technology EVER - and I have owned 2 previous Bose QC models (see below) - I wanted less bulky ear buds this time to increase comfort (I am on phone calls and/or blocking out background noise ALL day long) and I listed to audio books at night and falling asleep with headphones on is not so comfortable.
These ear buds block out more background sounds than any other model I have had before!! Not just white noise/airplane type noise, these even block people talking, TV, etc.
I was slightly concerned about the inline "brick" which holds the sound canceling circuitry. Since I am a heavy user - some Velcro or clear packing tape attaching the brick to my case works well to keep it from jerking around but the quality of the technology FAR out weigh my concerns, I am DELIGHTED!!
Just be sure to always get the 2 year service plan!! (for any headphones really - wires can break, accidents happen).
Background experience with previous models:
Frequent air travel prompted me to purchase the Bose QC 25 (over ear) 4 years ago. They worked well for blocking white noises such as plane engines but only slightly dimmed background office noises.
Then I upgraded to on ear QC3 headphones which were just as good and didn't pinch around my ears/glasses like the over ear headphones did.
The only complaint on both models is the detachable cord always snagged on things and ripped out of either end and the cord would wear and break or short out - replacements are around $30.
Recently my QC3's broke in an accident - I ALWAYS purchase the service plan at Best Buy for headphones or anything mobile - So I replaced them with the ear buds and am VERY happy!

Using BOSE QC20 while doing cardio?

Hi, will it be okay if i use QC20 while doing cardio?
YES as long as you clip the cord to your shirt and attach the inline brick to your phone or case so it doesn't jerk around. The ear buds are VERY comfortable and STAY in your ears. The technology alone is well worth the minor inconvenience of keeping the inline brick stationary. Just be sure to purchase the 2 year replacement plan. These are WELL worth the money if you really need sound canceling.

do these have a pause/play and sound control on the headphone?

Yes, pause play and call answer/end on cord. Also turns off/on sound canceling so you can listen with canceling or without AND they work when charging!
