LG Washer malfunctioning after just 3 weeks
on March 11, 2016

I bought this highly rated top load LG washer on Feb 22, 2016 to replace my Samsung washer which broke down due corroded Spider (literally crumbled into powder) in just 4 years. This LG washer comes loaded with features or atleast buzz words (SmartDrum, Motion, Anti-Vibration, TrueBalance, SmartDiagnosis, SmartPhone app to name a few). But I bought it mainly because it is a top-load and so I trust it does not have the spider corrosion/mold problem in all front load washers.
I followed to instructions to level the washer side-to-side and front-to-back, but the instructions are useless because the washer does not have any flat level surface to place the washer on. Top surface is all curved and sloping. How do they expect anyone to level this thing?. But I got it leveled as best as I could.
After putting clothes in, powering up the washer and selecting wash cycle, the washer does some moves called "load sensing" for several minutes which I have never seen a washer do before. Not sure what the point of this as it does not seem to make any difference. It is disconcerting because you don't know what you are supposed to do. Wait for 5 minutes in front of the washer each time you start a load?
Today I put a thin twin comforter and about 10 pieces of small clothing (underwear, socks) and started the washer. I selected the "Bulky" cycle as this is what you are supposed to use when washing comforter. The initial estimated time was about 1 hr, 15 min. About 50 min into the cycle, the washer started displaying error code "UE" which means unbalanced load. I redistributed the clothes and started again. It ran for another 45 min or so and ended up with the "UE" again. So I removed the comforter still dripping wet. With the remaining few clothes I restarted the washer thinking it will finish the spin cycle. Now the washer drum started wobbling violently and banged against the inside of the cabinet. The whole washer started shaking on the outside as well. Immediately I turned of the washer and called LG service. They asked me to level the washer. The washer is impossible to level (apart from the aforementioned lack of flat surface to place the spirit level). If I center the tub, then the spirit level is off center. If i level using the spirit level, the tub moves off center. LG Service than assked me just center the tub, and not worry about the spirit level. Then they asked me to select the "Spin Only" cycle which is meant to spin the drum without adding water. The estimated time was 17 min, but about 10 minutes into the cycle it started adding water, and raised the estimate to 20 min. Then this happened again at the 10 min mark. At this point the washer is filled with water and a few soaked clothes. In the Spin Only cycle, it shakes violently during spinning and when not spinning, it keeps adding water when it most definitely should not!! Even LG customer service was perplexed by this behaviour. Now they have asked me not use the washer until they can send a technician in 5 days. Not very convenient as we have lot of clothes to wash every day. I read through the manual and found a number of "nifty features" that don't work. For example the manual says it has a safety feature that will drain the tub of any water if the washer was halted/paused for more than 4 min. Not happening on my washer. Because of this clever auto-drain feature, there is no manual drain pipe on the washer which was common on older washers. I had to get a bucket and mug to get all the water out.
Very disappointed with this washer malfunctioning after just 3 weeks. It seems that all the appliance companies are more interested in adding buzz-words and complicated technology to impress people but don't pay attention to ensuring that washer functions reliably. All these smart features like TrueBalance, SmartDrum are useless if your washer starts vibrating violently with a light load and just quits leaving you with a tub half-filled with soap water and no drain pipe to empty it. I never thought you would need to baby-sit a washer but I think that is what this washer needs. You have to stay close at hand to constantly rearrange load or attend to error codes.
Finally a word to rating agencies who generously dole out 5 stars after using a washer a couple of times. There is no study or ratings on how the washer is expected to work after say 4-5 years. It is not ok if a highly rated washer is prone to malfunction/disintegration after warranty is over. Fortunately (!) for me this washer has started malfunctioning well before warranty expired so I have some recourse.
