Portable 4K is useful
on January 28, 2017

This is a great laptop, with a few niceties and shortcomings.
The GOOD:
4K is for real. Although, your best living room 4K experience will be on a screen larger than 60"... A 15" screen gives you incredible clarity on-the-go. You sit closer to a PC, so those details do impress. Looking at photos and 4K videos from my phone, are amazing, compared to my aging desktop PC monitor that can barely do 1080P. The refresh rate is 60Hz, so don't expect mind-blowing cinema experiences here.
4K is for screen real estate as well. I use the laptop more for my business, and reviewing technical papers and CAD drawings is a snap.
Touchscreen is responsive and yes, it's a very good feature. Fingerprints can be wiped, though I don't seem to need to for a week or so, in between.
Screen is bright and a joy to look at.
16GB of RAM is great. More RAM than most laptops in it's price range. I wouldn't expect you need more than this on a similarly-powered laptop for 5 years to come.
7th gen i7 is a dual-core CPU with four threads. It's a very good laptop CPU for 2017. It won't replace any gaming rig or desktop i7, but it's enough for most stuff on the road, including 4K streams.
The 2GB nVidia GeForce 940MX chipset is a nice bonus. It's a mid-tier laptop GPU that is enough for 1080P games, but it certainly won't do for 4K gaming, and you can't expect it to. You can stream 4K video nicely, which provides a very solid boost over the embedded Intel graphics.
SD card reader is included. If you get a BaseQI 103A or similar, you can use the SD for 256GB of 'slow SSD' storage. (see below)
It's THIN and LIGHT! Aluminum construction feels smooth. not sure if the casing can scratch easy though.
Battery Life is pretty good. I left mine in a car for 3 days in sub freezing temperatures, and it held a charge perfectly fine. Expect 4-5 hours of use with screen at 50% brightness. You can use a battery saving mode for more time (6-8 hours tops) if needed on a long flight.
One of the USB ports will charge your mobile device, even if the laptop is powered OFF! A very handy thing to have, I've already had to utilize it! Of course, your laptop battery needs a sufficient charge if you are not on AC power.
Fan: It's not that annoying for me. Remember, this is a mid-level power laptop, it needs cooling.
Price: it's a solid laptop for the price. I got an open-box to save a bit more.
THE BAD:
While the laptop sports a Solid State 'hard' Drive, it's 256GB size might not be enough for a power user. Furthermore, current BIOS limitations only allow for an out-of-warranty upgrade to 512GB. It's best to ride out the limitation for now, and wait for a 1TB BIOS limit increase. Use a microSD with half-size BaseQI (or similar brand) SD adapter to boost your storage for now, or plug in an external USB 3.0 HDD
Ports: Only 2x USB 3.0 ports makes having a USB hub a worthwhile idea. I'm fine with only two ports, I don't think this is terrible, but three would have been sweeter.
Ports: MicroHDMI. I don't know what to say. Now you have to carry a special adapter/cable to plug into a TV... the laptop is so portable, but you need dongles and hubs... kinda defeats the purpose.
Ports: No 10/100/1000 Ethernet. This isn't a deal-breaker, most modern laptops do not have wired Ethernet anymore. Purchase a USB 3.0 hub/Ethernet dongle, it will solve two problems, if you need wired Ethernet from time to time.
Ports: No USB-C/Thunderbolt. This actually is a little bit disappointing for a 7th gen cpu laptop. Expect these ports to be the norm in 2017, this laptop was released in September 2016. Thunderbolt adds a bevy of features, including display redirection (HDMI out).
Screen has a tendency to wobble if you are near vibrations, not sure if this is the hinge, or the weight of the screen, and casing being so thin.
Update application (software, drivers, etc.) is much weaker than coming from my HP. HP had this nailed, even better than Dell in my opinion. Lenovo produces a sophomore effort here.
OVERALL:
I love mine. It's easy to handle, it's responsive, the screen is gorgeous, I'm never going back to HD!
My Best Buy number: 2030151844
I would recommend this to a friend!

Handy, but glitchy

The drive concept is great. The fact that it has 10 hours of battery life, and can charge your phone in a pinch, is pretty cool, especially on a backpacking trip. The SD card import speeds are terrific, great for DSLR camera backup. The wifi is handy, and is not intended to replace the USB connection in any way, it's best for casual file transfers and MP3 audio or 720P video streaming.
Good Stuff:
SD Import:
OK, so I have backed up the contents of my Android phone SD card. My Note4 shoots nice 16MP photos and 4K videos. There are tons of other data on the SD card. On first import of the SD, it took longest, successive imports, it was to my delight, much faster! WD is doing some tricks here to only transfer files that are changed/added recently. Nice.
In my 'real' camera, I have a 64GB card in there, and shoot mostly RAW images in tandem with JPEG. The card ignores any files previously imported and copies the new stuff. The downside, the folders are split up by import, so you have to merge later on.
In any SD instance, there is a handy 4-segment LED bar that goes from 1 (empty) to 4 (full) as the transfer takes place. Very cool! You do not need a PC or APP to watch status. Great for that long trip without AC power...
USB 3.0:
It's fast enough. It's USB 3.0, or even backwards compatible with USB 1 and 2.x, it includes a USB 3 cable, that can be plugged into any USB port on a PC or MAC
WIFI:
It has dual-band wireless, it only works on one band to save power if you set it this way. The wifi is not even close to USB 3 speeds, which was expected.
The ability to do streaming over wifi to my laptop or phone, while camping or stuck on a long flight, is a nice benefit over a standard USB drive.
The BAD:
The Android app is terrible. You can change SOME settings, but there are more available if you use Chrome on your phone...
The app really does a bad job of organizing media, so that part is useless. Use other apps for this (plex).
There are bugs galore. For instance, if you import photos over wifi automatically (a neat feature), the device will never set the import date and time correctly, it's off by hours for me. I think it defaults to Pacific time, even though I was careful to set the devices clock to Eastern time. My router has Eastern Time, my phone does too, so why are my times all screwed up?
The Plex server might be cool, but read the Plex privacy agreement before signing up. Then read that you might want to subscribe to a premium service, then load the bloated app on your phone. It's all to time consuming for casual streaming of phone videos. If you have a lot of studio movies, I can see this Plex as a nice interface. I use the Twonky server option. It's open source, and no frills. It's nice to have two options, however. Another + for the HDD.
USB vs WIFI:
The drive violently spins down, then up, every time you dis/reconnect that cable! Yikes! This thing has a battery in it... just keep the drive spinning, please. I'd like the drive (and my data) to last years, not months!
Speaking of wifi/USB, you can't have both at the same time. So, if you connect your PC to transfer, anyone streaming gets cut off.
WiFI:
OK, the drive supports wifi, but it can be a frustrating experience. The wifi disconnects frequently (to save battery?), resulting in a bad overall experience.
I wish the wifi light would blink, showing data being transferred, that would be helpful.
If you add a hotel wifi network to your HDD, ANYONE on the Hotel network has 'root' access to the file system if they find your drive. Um... WTF? (did I miss a password option?, there is one for the web GUI, and one for the private WiFI...)
HDD:
There is no encryption, so if the drive is stolen, your contents are easily read.
Overall:
I don't think this drive is ready for the masses, and I bet there will be a newer model, instead of WD pouring resources into this thing, to make the firmware better. There ARE firmware updates, so, who knows?
For a power user, willing to learn the drive's limitations, this is a great product. It does not cost much more than a non-wifi enabled drive, and you also get a nice battery and SD importing.
I rated it three stars, simply because for me, it's close to a 4, but for most, it's a 3. I cannot recommend it to casual users.
I really hope some glitches get fixed.

Do you have to use WD software to view contents or video? or can you view from web browser (like the Seagate Wireless... software optional)

no, you can use other media software to view and stream. There is a web viewer, too.
