Exceptional Style - Size - Price Point
on June 4, 2021

The PureZone Elite is a straightforward, compact air purifier with a couple shortcomings. Right out of the box, setup was as simple as it gets. Just plug it in and turn it on. The only contents in the box are the air purifier itself and documentation. The included manual is professionally written and thorough.
Controls are straight forward to use with a toggleable ion and UV mode. Night mode disables most lights but does not affect fan speed. There are three fan speeds and an automatic mode which adjusts the fan speed based on air quality. Also, there is an indicator light on the bottom of the unit which changes between blue, yellow, and red depending on the air quality.
The unit includes a large HEPA filter and an activated carbon prefilter. Both are easily accessible. There are also replacement indicator lights for both filters. UV light and ionization technology provides a more thorough clean.
Slim, tall form factor takes up little room on the floor and fits neatly into small spaces. Integrated handle is also a neat touch and makes it even more portable. Registering this unit also extends its warranty by two years.
When I first turned the on the product it released a strong plastic smell that filled the bedroom. After a week of testing the odor is not noticeable in the room but there continues to be a slight scent of plastic at the face of the product. At its lowest fan speed, I notice a high-pitched fan whine which is annoying, but I got used to it. Overall, the PureZone has very promising features but is held back by a couple shortcomings.
What I like:
- Style and size of the unit – perfect for a small bedroom or office
- Ease of use – very straightforward
- Control layout is well thought out
- HEPA filtration
- Captures 99.97% of Allergens
- Good space coverage for the size – 190 sq ft
- Air Quality Sensors easy to read with three different colors
- Five-year warranty - nice
The PureZone obviously does an excellent job of filtering the air in our small bedroom and the style and size are tremendous pluses.
Bottom-line this is an air purifier that I really want to get my head around but feel it needs a small amount of refining. That said I still like unit and it remains in operation in our small bedroom.

The Sound You Want - Great Retro Style
on May 13, 2021
Posted by: vrs99
from TN
The Blue Blackout Spark SL is a terrific studio microphone for serious-minded streamers, content creators, and musicians. The microphone comes well packaged in a protective wooden box along with the shock mount. Build quality of the microphone and shock mount are excellent with all-metal construction. Microphone feels solid and substantial.

Setup was quick and simple with an easy connection to the shock mount. The shock mount connects to any standard boom thread and comes with an adapter for smaller thread. Take note that this microphone requires an XLR cable and a computer interface capable of supplying 48v phantom power.

Sound quality of the microphone is impressive with both vocals and electric guitar. Precise cardioid pattern focuses on audio directly in front of it and ensures accurate recording. It is best to speak close to the microphone as it is volume and fidelity drops quickly the farther away you are. Class-A JFET Electronics and Blue’s custom condenser capsule produces a richer and wider sound than my previous Blue Yeti microphone.

Two switches on the Spark SL are the –20db pad and the 100hz high pass filter. The –20db pad reduces the gain of the microphone by 20 decibels for recording loud noises. The high pass filter works to reduce background noises and rumbles from your room and keyboard. With my experience the high pass filter blocks out noise only when you are not talking so I recommend using it with a software noise suppression solution.

Key specs:
Frequency Response: 20Hz = 20kHx
Output Impedance: 50 ohm
Signal/Noise Ratio: 73 dB-A
Dynamic Range: 119.6 dB
The Blue Blackout Spark SL will take your recordings and streams to the next level.

Another Samsung Winner at Excellent Price
on May 8, 2021
Posted by: vrs99
from TN
To date I have six Samsung SSD and NVMe m.2 drives in my computers at home and pleased to be reviewing the Samsung 980 NVMe M.2 Internal Gaming SSD M.2.
To begin my review, I decided to replace my Samsung 960 Pro Boot drive in my desktop with the new 980 drive. Installation involved migrating my Samsung 960 Pro Boot drive Windows 10 OS and data to the new Samsung 980. Migration was achieved with Samsung Data Migration software which is an excellent migration Tool. Have utilized the Samsung Data Migration tool many times over the years and my experience is that the migration tool is rock solid, never any issues, always successful migrations. When transferring my data from one Samsung NVMe drive to another my transfer rate was at 260MB/s. Wow – makes for a short wait time to get your system back on-line.
The second brilliant item in the Samsung Toolbox is Samsung Magician Which will “Make Your Drive Work Like Magic.” The latest version of Magician 6.3 Samsung introduces "Full power mode” that can increase performance by 5-10%. “Full Power Mode allows the SSD to run at peak level (PSO) for nonstop consistent high performance.”
Magician is the complete SSD Toolbox:
- Optimization Tools
- Diagnostics
- Drive Encryption
- Health Monitoring
- Benchmarking
- Over Provisioning (one of my favorites)
- Complete Drive Information and Details
- Secure Erase
Samsung’s Tools are invaluable and set the standard for SSD management, optimization, and Health.
Samsung SSD’s and NVMe M,2 drives have been providing my system's data storage and management for many years without fail and never an issue from installation to full on management. Never a failure and my very first Samsung SSDs are still running strong in my computer desktops and laptops alike on my network.

Samsung SSDs are rock-solid, dependable, fast, and come with excellent warranties.
Did I mention the 980 is Fast, if not, it is insanely fast and an industry leader.
What do I appreciate about the Samsung 980 NVMe Gaming SSD M.2 drive, everything, the blazing speed, management tools, great warranty, data safety and their reliability. Samsung SSDs are winners.

Sleek Feature Packed Gaming Keyboard
on April 4, 2021
Posted by: vrs99
from TN
The Corsair K65 RGB Mini keyboard is the perfect fit for a compact gaming setup. Included in the box are a keycap puller, braided USB type A to C cable, and an extra PBT double-shot spacebar and escape key. The cable is well-made with textured connectors and subtle Corsair branding. Keyboard’s shell is made from black ABS plastic which contrasts nicely with its white steel plate under the keycaps. Entire keyboard has a small footprint and minimalist design. Am a big fan of the thin bezels and recessed white plate.
My first time with Cherry MX Speed switches and they feel like MX Reds. These feel considerably smoother with a shallower actuation point and travel distance. This is a marginal bonus for gaming; however, the keys might register unwanted presses if you rest your fingers too heavily on the keys. Personally, have not had this issue.
Double-shot PBT keycaps feel great to type on and have a light texture to prevent your fingers from slipping. All keycaps are removable if you want to further customize this keyboard. The 60% form factor does not mean you have to sacrifice the creature comforts of a full-sized keyboard. Almost every key on this keyboard has an alternate function easily displayed on the front-facing legend. You can still access the arrow keys, media controls, and even move the mouse cursor with these easy-to-access shortcuts.
More gaming-centric features include Corsair’s AXON technology which allows for an 8k polling rate.
This is extremely overkill and you will most likely not tell a difference if you are a casual gamer.
Full N-Key rollover is also a big plus as you can press as many keys as you want simultaneously without any issues.
Another thoughtful feature is the ability to lock the Windows key from registering so you do not accidentally interrupt your game.
Per-key RGB lighting looks nice on this keyboard. The white panel allows the lights to diffuse and blend, creating a seamless look which I really like. There is a many preset RGB effects accessible without installing any software.
If you are looking for even more customizability, this keyboard is compatible with Corsair’s ICUE software.
Overall build is sturdy, no complaints here. Four cylindrical rubber pads hold the keyboard in place with no problems. There are no pop-out feet on this keyboard but does not require them due to the case’s incline.
All in all, this is a great choice for the serious gamer who likes to fly under the radar.

Zero Compromises
on March 31, 2021
Posted by: vrs99

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus 14” is a no-nonsense laptop for the hardcore gamer on the go. First impressions of this laptop are how sleek and civilized it looks. The gamer aesthetic is subtle, looks and feels premium. ¼” thin bezels and minimalistic branding are also a big plus.
Big fan of its notebook form-factor as well, making it very portable.
Key stabilization is great on all keys and keyboard feels like any membrane keyboard. All keys have dimmable white backlighting which has customizable effects in the included Armory Crate software. Magnesium chassis has no deck flex with Dolby Atmos compatible, upward firing speakers. Another thing worth mentioning is the texture of the chassis feels comfortable when I rest my palms on it and will not attract smears and smudges.
ASUS’s “AI noise cancellation” is advertised to block out unwanted sounds from the microphone array. Was not able to get this feature to work even after an audio driver update and reinstallation of the Armory Crate software.
Next-gen RTX 3060 and Ryzen 9 5900HS shred through even the most intensive games at high settings. Paired with a 144hz, 1080p, variable refresh rate display, this trio creates a no-compromise buttery-smooth gaming experience. Don’t forget about workstation use, the Ryzen 9’s raw computing power is great for video editing, 3d rendering, and many more creative use cases. The SK Hynix NVME drive offers blazing fast read and write performance. Loads games in a heartbeat.
During heavy workloads, the fans are significantly quieter than other gaming laptops I have used. All this computing power comes with a cost, heat. The laptop gets uncomfortably hot on the bottom and very warm near the keyboard during intense gaming. However, cooling system keeps the temps in check, peaking at 76° on the CPU and 71° on the GPU under load.
This laptop has a myriad of thoughtful battery-saving features so you can enjoy longer cordless gaming sessions. For starters, Nvidia Geforce Experience has “batteryboost” optimized settings for games, which lowers the graphical fidelity of the games when on battery to save power while not sacrificing FPS. ASUS Armory Crate software also has preset “on-battery” and “performance” modes which automatically switch. Finally, the refresh rate of the display is locked to 60hz while on battery to greatly increase the battery life. Gaming on battery is still extremely smooth, even with all these features at work.
One drawback of this laptop is the absence of an integrated webcam. In this day and age where video conferencing is the norm, this redaction blemishes what is otherwise a near-perfect laptop.
Wi-Fi 802.11AX a big plus for future proofing or anyone who has latest AX (Wi-Fi 6) router. Incredible throughput with my Asus GT-AX11000 router.

Dyson Delivers in their Newest Cordless Addition
on March 23, 2021
Posted by: vrs99
from TN
The Dyson V15 Detect is my second Dyson cordless style vacuum, first one was a hit and the V15 hits it out of the park. In a word, it is awesome. As always Dyson vacuums are stylish while delivering on exceptional cleaning and ease of use.
First impression, the vacuum’s Hyperdymium motor and cannister are noticeably larger than my earlier model while maintaining the same overall length, brilliant engineering and design. The power and performance are amazing in a cord free machine, believe that it hands down outperforms my corded vacuum. According to ASTM F558 (vacuum testing standard) testing of the Hyperdymium motor shows the V15 “delivers the most suction of any cordless vacuum.”

The V15 Detect is well balanced, comfortable, easy to handle, incredibly quiet, and checks all the ergonomic boxes.
Easy setup: unpack and attach the wand and battery to the vacuum, select an head attachment and you are set.
The charging/docking station requires only two screws to mount to a wall for storage, thoughtfully Dyson kept the mounting screws pattern the same as our previous model. Simply installed the new docking station with the same screws into the same holes, appreciate the attention to detail.
LCD Screen:
1. Displays selectable Eco, Auto, or Boost power levels - we use Auto as the machine will adjust power based on amount of debris and battery runtime
2. Battery charge runtime left in minutes and seconds
3. Maintenance notifications
4. Displays “scientific proof of a deep clean.”
The particulate displays shows Allergens, Microscopic Dust, Dust Mites and Sugar readouts that were vacuumed - 36,475,810 Allergens were picked-up a one minute on one test I ran!
Runtime:
1. Medium mode - 45 minutes with Power Head attachment
2. Eco mode – 90 minutes
3. Full charge – four hours

Seven Accessories +
1. Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head - Laser Detect for Hardwood Floors Illuminates hidden dust on hard floors – cool feature
2. High Torque Drive cleaner head - Deep cleans rugs and carpets and designed to prevent hairs being tangled in the brush
3. Dyson Hair Tool – If you have an indoor pet this is an invaluable tool for removing pet hair from furniture and hard to get at spaces
4. Crevice Tool
5. Stubborn dirt brush
6. Soft dusting brush – great for dusting the complete house – Blinds have never been so clean
7. Combination tool
8. Wand Storage Clip – can attach two of the smaller head attachments to the wand – handy
Likes:
1. Converts to hand held
2. Filter traps 99.9 percent of allergen and dust particles – “Expels cleaner air than the air you breath”
3. Trigger locks when battery needs a charge
4. Bin is easy to clean, we eject the debris directly into our trash bags
We have many things in our life that needs cleaning and the Dyson V15 Detect simply answers the call, carpet, hard floor, rugs, blinds, air filters, fans, vehicles.... love to use it to clean the dust on desks, tables, pictures, crafts, bookshelves..... and makes quick work of it in their latest stroke of genius.
You may gather I like the machine, true but the proof is in the pudding, my wife loves the V15 and she is a tougher customer than I.

Brilliant All Weather System for Outdoors or Home
on March 13, 2021
Posted by: vrs99
from TN
First impression can be summed up in one word, Wow. The speakers are artfully designed, they look fantastic, and you can see immediately that there are serious engineering and production skills that speak to a company with experience. These speakers are the first time I have ever seen a Sonance product, and I am sold. As a tagline, I have always had top-shelve speakers in my home and can tell you this set is a winner. Excuse my many adjectives, but at times reviewing a new product is pure joy.

The weight of the amp and speakers is 14lbs which is fairly heavy for bookshelf size speakers, have found weightier amps and speakers typically produce the best sounds.

Now on to Setup – you need speaker wire; I used 16 gauge which works well and easy to install.

Three setup steps instructions in the QuickStart Guide:
1. Connect speakers to amp with the banana plugs
2. Download Sonos App
3. “Enjoy music, TV and more”

Sonos App walks you through the rest of the setup steps. Setup was smooth and easy. Installed my system in my garage which required the most work for me running cables up and over roof to speakers. Sans my wiring I believe the setup would require about 30 minutes.

Sonos Amp - 125W/Ch at 8 ohms
Clean sound and design with tremendous power all in a small footprint, brilliant.
Capacitive touch controls – excellent touch control for volume and flipping through songs.
Auto software updates
• HDMI ARC for TV
• 60Hz - 30kHz frequency response
• Peak Power Handling 80 watts
• Speaker enclosures are sealed
• Output for Subwoofer
• Two banana plugs for speaker wire – nice
• RCA AUX input for audio devices
• Ethernet ports (2)
• Stereo or dual-mono sound
• Optical output supported (optical adaptor required)

Sonos App:
• Adjustable bass and treble & balance controls (App)
• Home Theater controls
• Surround sound control for two Sonos Speakers with Wi-Fi
• All your services in one place, your App

On my App I have the following services (believe that about all streaming services are available):
• Sonos Radio
• Plex Server
• Spotify
• Line-in
• Music stored on my tablet

The All-Weather speakers have an environmental range of -13 to 140 degrees. Gone are the days of lugging my Bluetooth speaker to and from my garage in hot/cold weather. Love it!
The speakers are IP-66 waterproof rated, this spec I had to look up:
“A rating of IP66 means that the product is fully protected against
dust and solid objects. Moreover, the product is protected against powerful water jets projected by a nozzle (12.5mm) from any directions.”
Additionally, the speakers are Mil-Spec 810 which protects the system speakers from humidity, salt spray, and UV rays.
Mil-Spec 810:
“Part One of MIL-STD-810 describes management, engineering, and technical roles in the environmental design and test tailoring process. It focuses on the process of tailoring design and test criteria to the specific environmental conditions an equipment item is likely to encounter during its service life.”

Bottom-line, these speakers are made to take the weather in effectively any environment. The design and construction are seriously incredible, that Sonance developed speakers that work in wide-ranging climate ranges and deliver wonderfully rich music. Being a techy audio person, I am clearly astonished at Sonance’s technology and more to the point, the tunes.

Executive Style in a Durable Tablet Case
on February 27, 2021
Posted by: vrs99
from TN
Overall a solid well designed tablet case, which looks good with nice texture for handling. Has the looks and function to fit well at home, office, and school at a very reasonable price.
For me it works quite well for my primary use of my tablet which is streaming music in my garage-shop, provides the protection needed for my new Samsung tablet in a busy work environment.
Notes:
• The hard plastic that cradles the back of the tablet fits like a glove – big plus
• Fit and Finish – all aspects of the design are especially well executed
• Durable materials
• Stylus Pen holder
• Soft inner material attracts small particles easily – mostly from woodwork in shop
• A magnetic fastener would be nice – still closes nicely
For the price and utility of the case it is an easy sale for me.

Professional Streaming and Content Creation
on January 20, 2021
Posted by: vrs99
from TN
The AverMedia Live Streamer Cam 513 is in a different league than its competitors. Out of the box, first impressions were the size of the webcam and its heft. Even for its large size it still clamps securely to the monitor and can be mounted to a tripod. The AverMedia is built for and focused on serious streaming. A thoughtful feature is an integrated privacy shutter for extra peace of mind. The webcam is adjustable on all axes and stays firmly in place.
Setup was simple, just plug and play, however I recommend downloading their firmware updater and CamEngine software to get the most out of this webcam. CamEngine software unlocks many features of the webcam including video settings, facial filtering, effects, and AI face tracking. More involved settings can be found in OBS (Open Broadcaster Software). The effects are a bit gimmicky but are fun to to explore. AI face tracking works extremely well but requires 10-15% CPU utilization. The webcam came preloaded with the latest firmware.
Microphone quality is spot-on with little background noise. Also, the privacy shutter has an opening to allow the microphone to be used with the shutter down. If you are planning on using the integrated microphone for streaming/recording I recommend using filters in OBS to remove the present background noise.
Sporting a Sony CMOS sensor, this webcam can do 4k 30 fps recording or 1080p 60. Lens on the webcam is huge and boasts a 94-degree field of view. These specs make this the perfect camera for the serious streamer/content creator. Keep in mind that this camera requires direct lighting and some tinkering in the CamEngine or OBS to achieve optimal quality. Without adequate lighting this camera will look very grainy due to its relatively small sensor.
Overall, this webcam is the real deal when it comes to professional streaming and content creation.

Perfect for mid-size room - High-End System

First up, on opening the Blueair HealthProtect 9470i found it is an attractive air filter which will look great in any room at home or office. The style, lines and appearance reveal its Swedish heritage/design and development. Beyond the brilliant styling, the Blueair looks to have been well engineered and constructed.
The layout of the system is quite simple to manage, from filter locations, filter replacement steps and the intuitive control panel.
Setup was a snap, simple and very straight forward. Had the unit running within about 30 minutes after browsing the setup instructions. QR scan the Quick Start Guide and install the Blueair app and simply follow the installation prompts – Blue Tooth connection for app. App is well-written, could be a touch more intuitive.
System includes a professionally written manual, which I always appreciate. The manual is easy to follow and explains the system thoroughly.
Maintenance on the system will be simply accomplished in few steps. The Blueair will notify you when to replace filters which requires only opening a side door to remove and insert the new filters.
This is my third HEPA filter in my home and has replaced an older system in the master bedroom. Blends into the room with a with a quiet expression of style. A perfect match for the room.
The fan has three settings, running the on low is whisper quiet at (22 db) and on high is in the range of a “normal conversation” at (45 db.) In other words, it is quiet, superb for TV viewing.
“ENERGY STAR rated using less energy than an incandescent lightbulb on high (48 W).” That is a fantastic achievement for an air filter that will manage a medium size room. Excellent.
LED touch control panel and info read out works great and looks genuinely nice, quite intuitive to manage the unit. All the control panel functions are accessible within the Blueair app plus the ability to set schedules, dim LED brightness, create custom location name, set child lock, and other settings. It would be nice to have a “Night” button the control panel rather than having to get my mobile to switch the mode. Would be nice to have a remote to manage the system from across the room.
Control Panel shows Humidity, temperature, Air Quality info, filter indicator, controls, and air quality data – comprehensive and includes auto control which operates/adjusts the system based on air quality. Excellent read out for particulates, gases, humidity, and temp. All of which is assessable on the mobile app. Well thought out.
Notes:
• Supports Alexa
• Wi-Fi operates at 2.4 ghz
• Monitors air quality – particles, gases (tVOC)
• Two Pre-filters and two main HEPA filters
• HEPA filter replacement is $70 – nice price point
• Cable winder underneath where you can wind excess cable – nice touch
GermShield technology “functions to prevent bacterial growth” and kill germs – removes 99.97% of viruses, bacteria, dust, pollen, dander, mold, odors and 99% of germs.
Do I like the Blueair HealthProtect 7470i, absolutely. Gorgeous for an air filter system, checks all the boxes for a High-end air filtration system and does so without breaking the bank.

Good value with limitation
By CSatTX from Houston, TX
I am writing this review using the Split X2. Bought it on Black Friday. This is a tablet and a laptop combined. With a i5 CPU, 13 inch screen, and the price, this is a very good value. For a laptop, the weight (4.4 lbs) is OK, not great.
The only con on this item is it is non-expandable. First, the memory is only 4GB and soldered. It cannot go to 8GB. Second, there is supposed to be a HD space in the keyboard unit like the other X2 models. For some reason this particular model does not have that feature.
So if you can live with 4GB memory and 128GB SSD, this is an excellent machine. I am running Lightroom and MS Office on this machine and performance could have been better.
Drive expansion

The X2 does accept a 500GB drive in the keyboard.

4 convience of tablet and power of a real computer
By nearlynormal from springfield, IL
4 out of 5. Works as advertised. The screen works as a nice sized tablet. It could certainly use aUSB port onthe screen. If you aren't carrying the keyboard and want to show some photos from a flash drive you're out of luck.
Adding flash storage
December 31, 2013
It is true the tablet does not have a USB port to throw some pictures into. But you can insert a micro SDHC card into the top/tablet. You can currently get 64 GB Micro SDHC card class 10 which will fit nicely and increase the tablets storage by 50%.
Personally I store almost 11,000 high resolution picture files which requires 29 GB of storage. So I am guessing that 64 GB would suit the average user.

Rock Solid
By vrs99 from TN
Replaced my Linksys EA 6700 router with the WRT1900ac on my home network. The EA 6700 is a good router but it is not in the same class as the WRT1900ac.
The signal is outstanding, solid and fast throughout the whole house and outside too boot.
Setup is smooth and easy, especially if you are familiar with latest versions of the Linksys software. The router has plenty of features and added a few more since the last router versions.
Has the best Network Map I have seen, informative and quickly shows where your bandwidth is being used.
If you need/want a powerful router that is flexible and expandable (according to Linksys) in the future take a hard look at the WRT1900ac.
Plan on using eSATA? MUST READ - be Forewarned
September 3, 2014
One of my main decisions in purchasing the WRT1900ac was to attach my NetGear NAS on the eSATA port for easier access across my network.
No such luck.
Spent time with Linksys tech and neither my eSATA NAS from NetGear nor my external eSATA drive will work with the WRT1900ac.
Linksys does have a compatibility chart - somewhere - but not in their spec listings of what works with their router.
If you want to use eSATA do your homework and see if your device is compatible.
Tough Luck if your device is not on the list.

Crashed and Burned after 44 Days - Good Luck
By vrs99
Fast SSD - and Extra Fast to Crash in just 44 days. Of course it was on a Friday evening and cannot speak to Samsung until Monday. Cannot Chat with them as they do not offer Chat for SSD's.
Luckily it crashed two weeks after the 30 day return period to Best Buy. Guess it is a good thing they offer 10 year warranty? But have heard they will return a refurbished unit, which will not be good on 44 day old product. Must be living on the bleeding edge, should have stuck with the Toshiba, which I can't see a real life difference in speed.
After a Day of Wrestling with the SSD
July 11, 2015
After pulling every rabbit out of my hat I finally got the SSD going again. Have to completely reload OS, etc. starting at Windows 8. Not fun.
But I am "somewhat" happy that I was able to get the drive working. Not sure what happen to the drive, but have some suspicion of a setting in Magician (software system for the 850 Pro) which boosts speed?

Excellent laptop, but not the best value
By Xephyroth from Colorado Springs, CO
This HP Omen is the 3rd gaming laptop I've ever owned, and it's undoubtedly the best one I've had the pleasure of using. However, this product isn't perfect out of the box.
FIRST IMPRESSION / UNBOXING:
Out of the box, the first thing that I noticed is that this laptop has impressive build quality. The sand-blasted brushing brings a pleasant aesthetic while also bringing solid weight and durability. It's not incredibly flashy, so it doesn't scream "gamer" like a lot of other laptops, but it definitely brings a touch of the "gamer" aesthetic without being overzealous. The notebook is also much thinner than I expected, as I've been used to much thicker gaming laptops, but I suppose the lack of an optical drive attributes to that. The power brick is fairly small and compact for a machine that's capable of entry/mid-level gaming.
DISPLAY:
Turning the display on, the 1080p IPS matte display is nice and bright, and viewing angles are decent without too much color shifting. Bezels aren't too large, and it's not something I noticed until just now while writing this review. While I'm used to Quad-HD and 4K resolutions, I was not displeased with this display in any fashion. The webcam is above the display and can record at 720p/30fps. Not the best, but not the worst webcam I've seen.
KEYBOARD:
Typing on the keyboard is pleasant with the chiclet-style keys. It didn't take me too long to get used to the keyboard, having come from mechanical keyboards and MacBook Pro keyboards. The addition of the num-pad is certainly nice, as well. The keyboard is backlit red (as you'd expect with the Omen), but settings are very simplistic compared to other gaming laptops. The backlighting has 3 states: fully on, WASD on, or fully off. No, there are no fancy effects, and I wouldn't expect any at this price. I do find it a little bit surprising that you can't dim the backlighting, but I rarely dim the backlight on my keyboards, anyway, so it'd be a useless feature for me.
TRACKPAD:
Out of the box, the trackpad sensitivity was incredibly low for my personal taste. After making some adjustments to the Touchpad Settings in Windows 10, I found a sensitivity that worked well for me. The touchpad does not physically click, but there are left/right trackpad buttons. Initially, I did find the buttons to be awkwardly placed, but I actually got used to them fairly quickly. While the touchpad isn't the best I've ever used, it is pretty good, in my opinion. 2 and 3 finger gestures work, as well.
SOUND:
The Bang & Olufsen speakers surprised me. They have good volume and a pleasant sound signature. However, they're bottom-firing, so when you put the laptop on your lap, the frequencies dampen and you lose a bit of treble/mid-range impact. Keep in mind, this is with the "B & O Play Experience" toggled on from the "Omen Audio" application. You'll definitely want to leave that on if you're using the speakers, or else the bass will disappear and will sound really anemic. I did notice some clipping at max volume when bass-heavy music was involved. Headphone jack works well as you'd expect, but doesn't promise anything fancy, so don't bother trying to drive headphones with high impedance. The built-in microphone array is good for video/voice chat session, but don't expect it to compete with a USB desktop microphone in terms of sound quality. For all casual purposes, it does just fine.
PERFORMANCE:
This laptop comes with a 4-core / 8-thread Intel Core i7 processor. For most basic tasks, this is actually overkill. But for gamers, this is great, as more games are utilizing more threads. The GTX 1050 can play any older game at very high settings, and can still play many modern titles at medium / high settings at 1080p. 8GB of RAM is enough for most people, but individuals who multi-task with a lot of resource-intensive chrome tabs and extensions may find themselves wanting more. While the 1TB hard drive is rated for 7200RPM, I still find it unacceptable to not have the operating system installed on a Solid State Drive (SSD) for a machine at this price point. You will not be unlocking the full potential of this machine while your OS runs on a slow drive like this. Thankfully, the upgrade process is fairly simple. After consulting the service manual found on HP's support website, I unscrewed the 10 screws from the bottom of the laptop and removed the bottom panel by starting with the side closest to the display hinge. From there, you'll have access to the SATA drive bay, the M.2 SSD slot (unoccupied, but does support NVMe drives), and 2 RAM slots (with only 1 occupied). I suspect that each RAM slot supports up to 8GB, but I could not find any confirmation in any of the documents available on HP's support website.
I happened to have an unused SATA-based SSD, so I swapped that with the 1TB HDD and used the software that came with my SSD to transfer the OS from the HDD to the SSD. After this process, my HP Omen was substantially faster with booting the OS and running applications—a night & day difference.
BATTERY:
I haven't tested the battery life to an enormous extent, but enabling a battery estimation feature in the BIOS allows Windows 10 to report the estimated time (not just %) on battery. Depending on your brightness, power profile and workload, HP estimates 9 hours of mixed usage, and almost 7 hours of video playback. So far, I think that claim is accurate.
I/O:
The HP Omen doesn't support Thunderbolt 3, but all the USB ports support USB 3.1 (1 Type-C, 3 Type-A. There's also a gigabit ethernet jack, HDMI (HDCP 2.2, 4k@60Hz), and Mini DisplayPort. It also supports a full-size SD card which can be fully inserted into the laptop without sticking out. As mentioned before, it also sports a headphone and microphone jack.
CONCLUSION:
The HP Omen is a great laptop. It provides great features while also having room for a few upgrade. However, I do feel that an SSD should be included at this price—even a cheaper SATA-based M.2 or 2.5" drive would be fine. For a performance-oriented machine like this, skimping on the SSD is a poor decision on HP's part—especially at this price-point. I have seen competitor's laptops with the i7-7700HQ, GTX 1060, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD go on sale for cheaper. So in that regard, I do feel the HP Omen isn't providing as good a value, but it is objectively a good laptop—perhaps, just not as good a value when compared to other options around the same price.

This machine looks like it is going fast sitting on the desktop. The exhaust system vents on the back edges of the laptop brings to mind the tailpipes a supercar might be sporting. When it is cranking through benchmarking the cooling system and exhaust ports are doing a job, pushing volumes of hot air away from the machine.
The HP Omen is the most bang for the buck that I have ever seen in a laptop, this box is loaded with edgy technology. Not going through a list of specs, those are easy enough to find, what is impressive is that all techs are up to date, not last year’s stuff. Too many times have seen corners cut to save a dollar. Not here. Not one USB 2.0 in sight, which is surprising seeing that we just built beast of a desktop a month ago with the latest Z270 Kaby Lake i7 7700K, USB 2.0 ports still in use on an advanced motherboard. Kudos to HP.
Take a close look at the specs, you will find 802.11ac with a solid 866.7 Mbps connection. “Dual Force functionality splits traffic across two data streams, sending gaming traffic over the fastest connection available (typically wired), and all other traffic over WiFi.”
Other ports of interest (not a complete listing check the spec sheet):
1 USB 3.1 Type C
3 USB 3.1
Mini DisplayPort
What I love is the fact you can purchase a HDD Omen model and then add your M.2 NVMe drive of choice, that is cool. If you are not yet familiar with M.2 NVMe you should take a look. In a word (or more) they are fast, about seven times that of a standard SSD.
What is interesting is that with the HDD the system boots up in 9 seconds, that is fully populated with my programs/anti-virus and all my files. Impressive. Being spoiled by SSD’s I must tip my hat to HP; this machine runs tremendously smooth with the 7200 RPM Hitachi HDD.
The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 (4 GB GDDR5 dedicated memory) discrete GPU ran through the Unigine Heaven Benchmark smoothly turning good numbers while the cooling system kept the GPU at a respectable 68 degrees. Notable, that with all the heavy iron under the hood the system manages the temp easily.
Ran my favorite game, Civilization VI through its paces today set on the highest graphic settings and it ran like a champ.
Looks, it has the looks, brushed aluminum case with an excellent finish. Nice touches all-around.
Know it is a way cool machine as my kid, the gamer in the house is explaining all the great and subtle reasons why it would be better for him to hang onto the machine. Yeah right!
What I am getting use to is the keyboard offset, a bit to the left to make room for the full size numeric pad, which is a nice touch. Keyboard is fine and well suited for heavy accurate work, or gaming for that matter.
Want a blistering rig in your hands at an excellent price point, one that can kick it at games and can be easily expanded, check out The Omen.

Adding M.2 SSD
July 18, 2017
Added a M.2 SSD to the Omen and nuked all the partitions on the HDD and added it back to the system. Day and Night performance. That is one aspect I like about this model is that it does not come with an installed M.2 drive, you can pick your own SSD ads capacity.
Screams with the new M.2 and have an additionally terabyte of storage on the HDD, whcih I use to sync my files to frequently before syncing with the NAS.
Great machine.

Add stability to your home network with the Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender. With DirectLink technology, it avoids signal loss by adding another 5GHz Wi-Fi channel to the standard setup, which it then uses strictly for receiving signal from the source. This Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender covers an area of up to 12,000 sq. ft. and includes four Gigabit network ports.

Can this extender be connected with a hard wire from my router? or does it have to get its signal wireless from the router and then broadcast the wireless signal to computers. Where the extender located will better if its signal can be hard wired

Typically if you want to use a wire you will run it from your computer to the box, and that you can do with this device.

Which is better: AMD A8-Series or Intel® 4th Generation Core™ i3

I am going to purchase a new laptop and I've narrowed it down to either:the HP Pavilion 12-E017DX or the HP Pavilion 12-E019DX. The thing holding up my puchase it that I don't know what the diference is between the processors. I only use my laptop for general use...email, web surfing, facebook, etc. Can someone please tell me what the difference is and which one is better? Thanks
Personally without going and looking at the specs of the AMD card I would recommend going with the i3. The Intel chips are superior and deliver more performance for the price.

If you can stretch it go for the Haswell i5 which offers superior performance over the i3 and sips juice from the battery. Good Luck
