Just purchased this on 22 Feb 2015. Factory test sheet is dated 10/04/2014. After allowing unit to fully charge for 18 hrs and following all the instructions, the unit shows the batteries need to be replaced. Fails self-test, changed the battery date - same problem. Ran self test from the unit as suggested by tech support and it fails. Tech support is sending new unit since they do not have any replacement batteries in stock. Tech support said these batteries only have a 6 month shelf life. Nothing on the box indicates the date of manufacture so you can't tell how old the batteries inside may be. Perhaps they need to indicate that on the box if the shelf life is only 6 months as stated.
Additionally, you may want to verify that the serial number printed on the bag label that holds the cables and instructions actually match the serial number on the bottom of the unit or the serial number that shows in the PowerChute software. Mine didn't and I registered it with the wrong serial number.
I've used APC products for many years and not had any major problems so I can't say this is a typical experience. Everyone is cutting costs and perhaps these "new" batteries aren't what they should be.
