I travel extensively and bought this to replace a laptop. I went with an Apple product since I own other Apple devices and have already aquired apps that I need for my work.
First the bad.
-It is expensive.
-It does not have a USB port to load files on a memory stick. Often time I need to give a file to a co-worker or customer. The solution is to use an expensive SanDisk WiFi stick.
-The battery does not last for ten hours as advertised by Apple. It is more like 6 1/2 to 7 hours. If you are on long flights, you will need and external battery pack. Truth in advertising must for a foreign concept to Apple.
-The pencil is not available but that will be taken care of near future. I expect to frequently use the sketching capability.
-Some apps do not work on my iPad Pro that worked on my iPad Air. I suspect that will be resolved within a few months.
The good:
-The display is excellent.
-It works with previous generations Apple blue tooth keyboards.
-The biometric button works very well as I use complex passwords and the fingerprint technology is a time saver.
-The 12.9 " display is a good size to use the split screen. As and example I can put Microsoft word on one side and Microsoft Excel (or Power Point) on the other side and then copy and paste into my reports or presentations. Very quick and easy. Love it!
-It has a full virtual keyboard (that means it has a tab key which is nice in doing documents.
-My cellular model has a GPS chip that provides location data outside cellular coverage. (You must have an application that has the map data on the device not in the cloud) In addition to Garmin road maps II can use topo maps in remote locations. Apple Maps apps quits working once your out of cellular range.
-Weight of the device is good. That said, I would accept a little more weight to get more battery life.
-If you have other Apple products there is a very little learning curve.
Conclusion:
This device will not replace your computer but it brings a lot of capability to the “Road Warrior”. That said it can meet the requirement for creating documents, presentations, spreadsheets, surfing the web, GPS directions, and e-mail. You can watch movies on a long flight and play some games.
All in all, I am not totally satisfied with this device. Battery life is a big disappoint for me. If I were just using this around the house it would be OK. Apple is rapidly losing its edge to other brands and unless Apple enhances capability they will be left behind.
I would not recommend this to a friend unless they were a business traveler. For most other people the smaller iPad Air is a better option.
