A Welcome Return to Form

I tried to convince myself that I really liked their last album. I wanted to. I couldn't. This album gives me a reason to not like that last album. This is really good music.
What I have always liked about The Cult is their ability to fill an entire album with good music and make you feel like you have gotten your money's worth. With a lot of other bands, you get the two or three songs that are released on the radio and then you are stuck with the rest of the album that doesn't quite measure up. Not so with The Cult, and this album is no different. You buy the entire album, not two or three cuts and a bunch of album filler.
At the beginning of the review, I said that this is really GOOD music. GOOD, not quite GREAT. This is no SONIC TEMPLE, but it is no BORN INTO THIS either. The sound is still there. The voice is there but not quite what it used to be. Age is catching up with Asterbury's voice, but I think we can get another solid effort or two before it overtakes it completely.
This is the type of album that makes you believe that the band can recapture a little bit of what made them great to begin with.

Enjoyable, but Should Have Been More Memorable
on July 17, 2012

In a way, this score goes hand-in-hand with the movie. Though I love the movie, if I step away from the mythos that I love, I can acknowledge a lot of flaws (that hopefully will be explained in sequels), and it is the same with this score. If I step away from the cues that I do like, mainly the ones that harken back to the original movies, I can find flaws in the score as a whole. It is very enjoyable score in the moment, but once it is over not a lot of tracks stay with me in my head.
And while I just mentioned that I really liked the individual songs that sound reminiscent of the original movies, I do appreciate that this score tries to stand on its one feet for the rest of the album. Which is keeping in line with the movie itself; referencing the originals but taking us in a new direction.
I will gladly listen to this again and again, but I will listen to the scores from the first and third movies more. This one will probably find its way into the rotation a bit more than the fourth however. And just as a side note, though I love Horner's work, it is a bit too militaristic for sitting at my desk at work trying to concentrate. The Prometheus score does give me that.

Good, with bright spots showing its potential.

If you like Beltrami, then you would like this album as it has his signature all over it. So much so, that when I had this album in a random rotation, I guessed that I was listening to a previous album. But there are a few cuts that stand above, that have that epic quality about them, but they are nestled in among filler; good filler, but still filler. And of course, getting to hear cues from the original is a nice way to round out the album.

ROCKED THEN, ROCKS NOW
on April 13, 2012

I used to own this on cassette, and after hearing a song from the album on the radio I began to get a bit nostalgic, so I picked it up on CD. I had forgotten just how good this album was. The songs from it that I really liked back then, were still just as good and the songs I didn't like back then (Zombie Stomp) I still don't like.
I was never a Black Sabbath fan or a true Ozzy Osbourne fan before or after this album. But this album was different for me, probably the fact that it was more mainstream. I forgot how much I enjoyed listening to Zakk Wylde play on this album.
Is it a perfect album? No, but it comes pretty close. And it gets extra points from me for still being an album that I would still listen to now.

This Album Has Aged Very Well

I owned this on cassette back in the day and I decided to purchase it on CD here recently. I was a little worried that I would purchase it more for nostalgic reasons, listen to it once or twice and realize that I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. I was wrong.
It was always a solid album with only one or two tracks that I felt were sub-par for this outing, and that is still the way I feel about it. The hits from this album were just as good as they were back then and the rest of the album is just as solid now as well.
As much as I love the Plant/Page collaborations over the years, this is the album that I wish they would have made together, not Coverdale/Page. But since they didn't, I will gladly keep spinning this disc.

Van Halen Remembers How To Rock
on April 12, 2012

I am sorry that Michael Anthony is not a part of this, but once you get past that, you won't look back at all.
The album makes you feel like you have stepped back into a time warp. The music feels like it came right out of the early 80's, and in a way I guess it did. I did not have a problem with VH reworking unused tracks from previous albums, as it was their work to begin with, so I thought the sound was perfect.
As much as I liked early Sammy Hagar Van Halen, you just didn't know how much you missed David Lee Roth until you hear them together again. Dave definitely brings out the best in Eddie and this is their best effort in a long time.
As much as I wanted to rail against Wolfgang for displacing Anthony, I thought he did a great job. I didn't notice the hole left in the backing vocals as much as others did, and I didn't feel that the bass performance suffered as a result.
This album definitely panders to the older crowd and nostalgia in general, but I feel it is a strong enough album on its own to win over some of the newer generation looking for something old, something new, something borrowed, something Dave.
What's great about it: The music, Diamond Dave, Eddie
What's not so great: No Michael Anthony

A Classic Album
on April 12, 2012

I had this on cassette back in the day and since then had lost it. I had purchased the Greatest Hits a while back in an effort to not have to replace all of my Cult cassettes with CDs, but ultimately I felt I had to have this entire album.
I had forgotten how good an album this was from start to finish. Every song is good with no real filler tracks. It was well worth the money.
What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: Nothing, if you like The Cult

Er...More Than Meets The Eye?

If you are reading this review for the latest Transformers, then it probably means that you already have a passing interest in the movie. If you liked the first one, you will probably like this one. If you liked the second one, you should definitely think that this is an upgrade.
Sure, it is more of the same; giant robots, fate of the world...Well, that is exactly what I wanted out of this movie. And it delivers. If you are expecting a masterpiece of plot and acting, then look elsewhere. If you are looking for action and special effects, then this is your ticket.
What's great about it: Giant robots
What's not so great: Plot holes as big as the robots

Best of the Haslinger Scores
on April 11, 2012

For the series, my favorite score is for Evolution, by Marco Beltrami, but this is my favorite Haslinger score of the three that he has done. It is very similar to the original score but feels more fresh.
All four are good scores, provided you like dark and moody scores, and if you really like the first one, you should like this one as well.

Ink is ink, except when it is ink for your Canon printer. Changing it is as easy as it gets, and the print quality is great. Buying the multi-pack saves money.
What else could you ask for?
What's great about it: Multi-pack saves money, easy to change, great print quality
