I can go running without my phone!
on November 22, 2015
Posted by: Lisa
I had previously purchased the Adidas Smart Run (approximately same price) to track my running. I had about two weeks, and exchanged for the TomTom Spark w/ Music, and and glad I did. Here's a summary of my first impressions with the Spark:
Pros:
-GPS is very accurate!!!!
-GPS locks on quickly.
-Auto upload data to favorite running apps.
-Much smaller than Smart Run. Not the most attractive device, but it wouldn't be uncomforatble to wear all day.
-Waterproof
-Good battery life (so far)
Cons:
-Rubber wristband, would have preferred silicone.
-No auto-stop feature for when you stop at a stoplight, for example. Strava, and possible other apps, does correct for this, though.
-Headphone connection cuts out when wearing on left wrist.
Mobile Submission: True
I would recommend this to a friend!

I have Jaybird Bluebuds X2 wireless headphones. They work great with watch, I can wear on either wrist with no signal problems. Quite pricey, but the sound quality is fantastic.

TomTom Special Edition Runner GPS Watch: Increase your running stamina with this watch, which offers interval and treadmill training with a digital partner. Water resistance up to 165' allows use in aquatic environments or rainy weather.

Does this watch (TomTom special edition RUNNER) show speed in mph?

I am looking for a watch for running but it would also be nice to be able to use it on my bike to measure my speed in mph (not pace in min/mile). Can anyone confirm that it will show me speed? I know the TomTom multisport shows speed, but I am asking specifically for the Runner model. Thanks!
Yes, you can select speed in MPH or min/mile.

Is this the same watch as the TomTom Spark Cardio + Music

The naming is slightly different, so I'm trying to determine if this is the same watch as advertised on the TomTom website http://www.tomtom.com/en_us/sports/fitness-watches/gps-watch-music-cardio-spark/sky-captain-scuba-blue-large/?icmp=2015-Nov-Sports-SparkXmas-banner-2

Except for the wrist band color.
Yes, it's the same.

When running, do you have to have your phone with you too?

In other words, does phone need to be in close proximity? Purchased a Pebble SmartWatch tonight at Target but it syncs with phone and you have to run with phone and watch. Trying to find a solution where the phone is not needed for running.
You can leave your phone at home! The TomTom Spark has GPS, music, and heart rate monitor. I sync all data with my phone afterwards. You can set up to automatically upload to other apps, as well (e.g., Strava, MapMyRun, etc).
