2nd best bank heist sequence ever filmed (Heat surpasses it by a step) as a robbery unfolds in near real time...and the heist itself is wordless. Jules Dassin understood noir and crime as well as Orson Welles.
BEAUTIFUL transfer on this Criterion Blu Ray. A must-own.
You like Fincher? Good. Watch this. You like edgy, pull no punches filmmaking? Good. Watch this. You like seeing a master craftsman unleash camera and editing on the montage? Watch this immediately.
It's not perfect from a plot standpoint (the climax is creaky if you think about it for more than 5 seconds, hence the loss of 1 star)...but from a technique standpoint, it's flawless. And more than once, Fincher will remind you why you love him....because more than once you will say, "Wow...he just did that."
The most expensive art film of all time. It doesn't even have a plot....it's just a concept piece: "get to the green place". And then 120 minutes of mind blowing chase ensues. And it is CRAZY.
Nothing else like this exists. It's not better than Road Warrior...it is its own beast. And it is CRAZY.
