TV over fireplace
How far from the fireplace opening should I hang a flatscreen TV. How do I hide the electric and cable if it is brick front? How do I find resources to do the wiring and hang the TV?
Contrary to popular belief, "Over the fireplace" is actually one of the WORST places to put a flat screen television. (Regardless of how far above the fireplace you put it. (For the following reasons : )
1. Heat rises.. FAST. It doesn't matter how high you put it, because much of the heat from a fireplce goes straight up, right outside the fireplace. If you must mount it above, keep in mind that the larger the mantle (the deeper,) the better it will be for your television.
2. Proper ergonomics put a television directy in front of you, so that your eyes are in line with the center of the screen. The higher you put it, the more likely you will be to put additional strain on your neck and eyes. (By having to look up, all the time.)
3. Wiring for a television over a fireplace can be very difficult/time consuming/expensive, because typically, the fireplace itself is surrounded by brick, and then a mortered wall. Wiring this is probably best left to the pro's.
