Winner of four Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Film, Ang Lee's sumptuous and romantic martial arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has been given an excellent DVD release from Sony Pictures Classics. The colors are always vibrant and alive (just check out the lush greens during chapter 25, "Li vs. Jen") and there is much depth to the many nighttime scenes as well. Picture and colors are stable throughout, though there are a few scenes in which background colors tend to slightly pulsate. Overall, the disc's transfer is superb. The film is offered in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and has been enhanced for 16 x 9 TVs. The soundtrack has been digitally mastered and there are multiple listening options, including the original Mandarin language (Dolby Digital 5.1), an English-dubbed track (Dolby Digital 5.1), and a two-channel French track, as well as optional subtitles in English and French. The DVD also contains a commentary track with director Lee and co-executive producer and co-screenwriter James Schamus. Unfortunately, the commentary track is a major letdown, due mostly to Schamus' annoying and constant sarcasm and his uncanny knack for continually interrupting Lee and turning the attention back to himself. What could have been a great extra is sadly almost ruined by Schamus' input. Included on the disc is a 20-minute Bravo making-of special called Unleashing the Dragon, which gives a nice overview of the film, with plenty of interviews of cast and crew members. There is also a conversation with actress and martial arts icon Michelle Yeoh, a photo montage (accompanied by Tan Dun's haunting score), and a short interview with cellist Yo-Yo Ma. This is a great release, though one that could be improved upon.

This straightforward DVD release of Blast From the Past is as light on features as the story is in general. The disc includes widescreen and pan-and-scan versions of the movie on a single-sided, dual-layered disc. The widescreen version is a non-anamorphic transfer at an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Both transfers seem to have been sourced from pristine prints, and exhibit neither scratches nor speckles. Colors are strong and accurate throughout, with excellent blacks and good shadow detail. Edge enhancement and compression artifacts are absent. The disc includes Dolby 5.1 and Dolby Surround tracks and English subtitles. Both audio tracks are clean, well-mixed, and unspectacular; for a movie of this kind, serviceable audio is perfectly adequate. Both tracks have a good punchy bass that will provide subwoofers with a fairly decent workout. The disc extras include the theatrical trailer, a corny "Love Meter," cast and crew information, and a DVD-ROM section (using PC Friendly) that provides detailed background on the film, access to the shooting script with the ability to look at a scene after reading the script section (the script can also be printed out), a copy of the early Internet Movie Database page on the film (and a link to the updated page), and a selection of elements taken from the original film site. The bonus section is nice, if not mentally challenging.

Even if you aren't a fan of wrestling, there's no disputing The Rock's magnetism and charisma in front of the camera. The Scorpion King his first leading role, showcases his physical ability and animal magnetism without restraint. The DVD is widescreen and is loaded with extras including a sneak peek behind the scenes at his next big role in the movie Helldorado, video commentary with The Rock as he shares stories about the making of The Scorpion King. The DVD also offers alternate scenes that you can view as you watch the film, a shot-by-shot choreography of a fight sequence as it happens from story-boards to rehearsal. There's a commentary track with director Chuck Russell, a making-of documentary, a visual -effects discussion with the effects team, the "I Stand Alone"music video by Godsmack and more. There is also a pretty interesting DVD-Rom feature called "Universal Studios Total Axess" that gives the viewer access to regularly updated commentaries, behind the scenes footage and lots more. The Scorpion King is also available in a version which includes the soundtrack to the film.
