a splash of energy w/ enhanced harmony

This is a pretty good CD. A lot of people would probably rate it 5 stars or 1 star, but I think the music on this album is just missing something, a certain degree of concrete, it's like the melodies are a work in progress, not really finished, kinda like food that hasn't been eaten, but rather seems like it b/c it's been spread around the plate. NFG are great at vocal harmonies and their CDs usually have sharp and bright production values, and their melodies are full of energy, but the CD is just missing something. It's not a one star CD, it isn't a two star CD, but a four or five star CD? Maybe 3.5.
What's great about it: vocal harmonies, fresh-sounding energy, clean production
What's not so great: the melodies aren't memorable and/or decisive

possibly the best album ever?

There's a lot of pop-punk out there, a lot of it is actually pretty good, some of it better than others. But this CD goes far beyond what other pop-punk achieves (possibly b/c most pop-punk doesn't even try...). I'm talking about life-affirming music, the kind that gives you the true feeling of life. It's the only CD that I can say this about. It's harder to get that feeling out of it nowadays, after over a year or two of listening to it, but the music hasn't changed a bit. The lyrics are good too as far as I can tell, although I'm not as picky about that as a lot of people are. They definitely don't detract from the music, although it is kind of hard to understand what he's saying in a lot of parts. You get the emotional jist of what he's saying though.
What's great about it: profound
What's not so great: n/a

best cd of 2006

A lot of people hate emo. I don't. I like the idea of it, and I like a lot of the music that's in this genre. Of course, there's even more of this genre that I think is just terrible, mainly a lot of the older pre-historic emo (like Sunny Day Real Estate, Hot Water Music, Cursive, et al...). These dudes (HH) aren't the most sytlistically original band to emerge from the world, but they do create melodies with passion and fire. And I think ALL music ought to do that. Unfortunately, it seems like technicalities and theatrics seem to be more of a draw to a lot of rock music fans. What ever happened to the most important thing(s) in life: Love - ? this CD is kind of a perverse record, as it's kind of an anti-love CD, with brooding, sad melodies, but it works for me 'cause I've never been in love. I thought I was in love with someone when I was 17/18 (senior in HS), but now that the years have passed, I can't say I'd care if I saw her again, except to re-ignite the passion (note that passion is not love necessarily...), which has more or less died since I graduated High school. I also just like feeling melancholly. Call me depressed if you will. I don't know what I can do to change the way I am. I take depression med, so I'm not ignoring my madness. Sorry if this review seems a little too autobiographical, but I think a person's experiences have a lot to do with how they perceive an album or song...anyway; toodles~J.C.
What's great about it: catchy, melancholly

It takes Three to Tango in this sexy romantic comedy of mistaken sexuality. Starring Friends' Matthew Perry, Party of Five's Neve Campbell, and The Practice's Dylan McDermott, this hilarious tale of love and architecture arrives on DVD from Warner Home Video. Presented in both anamorphic widescreen 1.85:1 (enhanced for 16 x 9 TVs) and standard 1.33:1 pan-and-scan full screen accompanied by a closed-captioned English Dolby Digital audio track, the disc also features a French Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track in addition to optional English and French subtitles. Extra features include a theatrical trailer.

BEST ROMANTIC COMEDY

I wouldn't recommend this to many people, 'cause obviously most people didn't like it, to put it mildly, and there ARE some moments in this film that almost make me cringe, but overall I found this film to be a very romantic tale of a man who is in love - really, IN LOVE, not just attracted to - his boss's mistress. Their love (mutual) comes through in enough scenes, which is more than I can say about such cornball fluff as SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE etc.; and despite the occasional moment of humor seemingly created by a deluted teen (or an engenous 5 year old), there are ALSO many scenes of memorable humor and the nature of the story gives the humor enough well rounded meaning to keep this a fav of mine for years to come.
What's great about it: Very romantic, very funny
What's not so great: gotta put up with some dumb humor...

THE BEST THING SINCE 1991

If you liked the popish-art of GENESIS (especially circa 1981-1991), and you're open to new things, you may very well like this CD. DIFFERENT STARS (TPW's predecessor to this) was a lot more laid back sounding and I know a lot of people don't like that sort of thing. This CD is a little more more energetic and quite a bit louder, also A LOT more sonnically interesting. The opening track may be seen as the best track on the album until you listen to the rest of the album enough to warm up to it. At least that was my experience. The closer is a bit too long-ish, but they can't exactly end the album w/o letting the goodbye linger, can they? Well, they probably can, but...anyway. Some see this as "experimental" music, but I just think of it as sonnically interesting. I guess compared to today's "TOP 40", anything good would be "experimental"...

Michael Ritchie directed Eddie Murphy in the fantasy-adventure The Golden Child, which comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the orignal theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Mono. There are no subtitles, but both English soundtracks are closed-captioned. Supplemental materials are limited to theatrical trailers. The picture and sound quality on this Paramount release are both quite good, but the lack of extras make it difficult to swallow the high list price.

Ok, so Eddie Murphy didn't die shortly after this film's release and naturally he's made a ton of movies since then...but does that mean when he's done 500 movies since THE NUTTY PROFESSOR you'll look back and say "The Nutty Professor was one of the first ever movies Eddie Murphy was in"? I mean, seriously; comparisons mean nothing if you don't consider the relevancy of them. Same thing with movies - if a movie is not loved (and I mean "love"d", not just the lukewarm response that most of Eddie Murphy's films these past 15 years have induced on the individuals who don't hate them or dislike them...) it's no more relevant than the number of rocks on some beach you've never been on or near.

What's the difference b/w DVD-Audio and Blu-Ray Music?

I see these listed as format -- do they require specific players?
Most DVD Audio discs will play on just about any DVD player made since 2005, but the "cool" thing about those is they offer playback in "surround sound", so if you wanna listen to DVD Audio, you might want something aside from TV speakers to listen to them on. As for Blu-Ray music, those require Blu-Ray players. The "Blu-Spec" discs can play in regular CD/DVD players, or so I've read...

NOTE: I'm extremely low income, so I haven't used the products recommended, but I've been reading up/learning about this stuff the past couple years or so. Onkyo is a very good brand, their products are very well made, although when something does happen during the warranty period, they tend to give less than good service, to put it nicely...chances are it won't be an issue though. Also, "home theaters in a box" are supposedly not the best way to go, but given my lack of intelligence, that's the way I'd go. perhaps you can learn something more from someone else. I still don't know what 7.1 surround sound is...I certainly haven't seen any 7.1 home theater in a box(s)...

Does BestBuy transfer from LP to CD?

I sure wish they did. I've been looking for services that do that sort of thing and haven't found any that charge a worthwhile cost (cheaper to just replace it on CD 99% of the time...). But I'm pretty sure BestBuy hasn't hopped on that one...
