Fans of classic television may recall the ABC adventure saga Tales of the Gold Monkey from its initial prime-time run, spanning September 1982 through July 1983. The program starred Stephen Collins (7th Heaven) as Jake Cutter, an American soldier-of-fortune based on the (apocryphal) Marivella Islands in the South Pacific, circa 1938. He spent his days in and around the port of Boragora, surrounded by schemers, spies and con men of many nationalities and backgrounds, and embarking on various adventures, some of which involved his weathered seaplane, a Grumman Goose. Supporting characters included the drunken mechanic Corky (Jeff MacKay), French magistrate-cum-bar owner Bon Chance Louis (Roddy McDowall), and undercover agent and lounge singer Sarah (Caitlin O'Heaney). This set presents all complete 20 episodes from the first season, plus a number of bonus features including a making-of documentary with Collins, O'Heaney and other series principals, costume and artifacts galleries, a collector's booklet, and much more.

If you love the Pulp genre, Tales of the Gold Monkey is a great show of high-flying, two-fisted action set in the South Pacific of 1938.
While the couple of episodes that featured men in monkey suits were tough to watch in the days of CGI, there wasn't an episode of Tales of the Gold Monkey that I didn't enjoy.

This was a sleeper film that jumped out and bit me!
I didn't know about this film until it came to DVD, then I saw posters for it at the local video stores. Still, I didn't know anything about it so I moved on.
Then I stumbled across it on one of my movie channels and was immediately drawn in. I liked it so much that I waited around for the west coast showing and watched it again to see what I missed (which turned out to only be about 10 minutes).
The multi-layers of fantasy that tell the full story are too beautiful to describe justly. Add to that the great soundtrack and you have a winner.
I saw the Avengers 7 times in the theater. I would have gone more, but movie prices are expensive.
I left the theater after seeing it the first time, grabbed some lunch, went back to see it again, picked up my wife, grabbed dinner and saw it with her for a third viewing in the first day.
I highly recommend watching the five movies that lead up to The Avengers first and in order: Iron Man, Hulk (Edward Norton), Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America. The combination of the backstories from these five movies are what vault The Avengers from a good action flick to a GREAT story. You are cheating yourself if you go into The Avengers cold.
My one concern going into the film was that Edward Norton was replaced as Dr. Bruce Banner (the Hulk). But Mark quickly won me over to his version of the character. Both did great jobs and I enjoy both films, but I no longer look at the change in actors as a negative point of the film.
And the Hulk steals the show. Everyone was great...but the Hulk just dominates the scenes where he is raged-up...well...even when he's not.
You also have to pay attention to all of the little side comments. Humor is found EVERYWHERE. There were lines that I didn't even hear until my 4th or more viewing of the show because the audience was clapping/laughing too loudly to hear the follow up.
I can not recommend this film and the five preceeding films enough. I can't wait for Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Captain America 2 coming up...and I'm sure to be followed with The Avengers 2 at some point!
I've been a fan of The Killers since Hot Fuss. I loved every song on that debut album and played it constantly. It is still on my iPod today and gets frequent playings.
I bought the next couple of albums and they were fine. I have favorite songs from each of them which are in my Killers playlist. One CD I never got around to buying and I'm not sure I've heard anything from it.
But then I heard Runaways about a month before this CD released...and couldn't WAIT to buy it. I'm glad I did. Just like Hot Fuss, I love every song on Battle Born and it is in my CD player at home and my iPod that I listen to all day long at work.
Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) prepare for what may be the toughest fight of their lives when Castiel (Misha Collins) accidentally releases the seemingly unstoppable Leviathans. Bent on enslaving (and then eating) all of humanity, it's up to the Winchester brothers, Bobby (Robert Singer), and Cas to save the population from total digestion.
I've been following Supernatural regularly since I took a chance and bought Season 1 based on the writeup of the DVD box alone. It was money well spent...though I may have lost my wife to those two "pretty boys."
=)
Season 7 doesn't disappoint either. To me, the best part of the show is the chemistry between the two lead actors. They are just fun to watch together...when they give the angst a rest for a second and let the feel of the first few seasons back in for a bit.
My only complaint, if you can call it that, is that I wish the writers would lay off of the "Big Bad Devouring the World" theme for a season or two. I like far reaching plots, but after Yellow-Eyed Demon, Lilith, Lucifer, Someone I'm forgetting, Michael and the released inmates of Purgatory...I'm ready to get back to the boys hunting interesting "monsters of the week" cases. They touched on that a bit in Season 7 which I was happy to see.
Oh...I don't usually watch a lot of the DVD bonus material, but you have to watch the extended-short of Dean singing in the car. Absolutely hilarious and it looks like the actors were having a lot of fun...which I think makes for a better show.
What's great about it: Fun cast
What's not so great: They need to take a break on the end of the world themes...
The second season of the reboot "Hawaii Five-O" continues to follow the elite "Five-O" task force led by ex-Navy SEAL Steve McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin). Danny Williams (Scott Caan), Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) and Kono Kalakaua (Grace Park). Introduced this season are new governor Sam Denning (Richard T. Jones); medical examiner Max Bergman (Masi Oka) and Special Agent Lori Weston (Lauren German). The new governor insists on changes to the task force, but the law enforcement team still investigates a vast array of crimes from murder to terrorism.
First off, let me say that I have never watched the original series...so I came in fresh without any basis of comparison.
I really enjoyed Alex from Moonlight (a show killed off far too quickly) and thought I'd give it a go. I have not been disappointed.
Season 2 really jumped out at me with the combining of the NCIS and Hawaii Five-O universes.
One of the best things about this DVD collection (and the NCIS: LA Season 3 collection) is that it includes both the NCIS LA and the Hawaii Five-O portions of the crossover episodes. So if you don't buy one of these collections for some reason (Why wouldn't you?)...well, you still get both sides of the story.
I was already a big fan of NCIS when NCIS LA started. I wasn't sure I'd care for another spin-off of another show. [Of course I keep forgetting that NCIS itself was a spin-off of JAG.]
