Expensive but Outstanding

Got my Sony A1E installed 04/15/17. I expected very very good picture quality. This television has exceeded my expectations. The upscaling of standard definition sources to 4K is astounding. I have not been able to review 4K content since I do not have a 4K player-yet. Therefore, I have not been been able to view HDR material. Watched the movie Easter Parade on Easter on AMC Channel and the dance sequence numbers were unbelievably superb. The colors of the costumes were spectacular. I have tried to upgrade my DirecTV equipment for 4K but they have been a nightmare to deal with for their one channel that is not pay-per-view. The sound on the A1E is better than expected. I actually turned down the brightness on the Standard Mode setting because the whites were so bright during commercials!
My previous set was a Pioneer Plasma and I was concerned about motion while watching sports. The motion processing on this set is on a par with plasma. There is no ghosting or blur from the centerfield camera as a pitch heads to home plate. Beautiful. The picture is stunning. I am in awe each time the set is on. I struggled making a choice between 2017 LG and Sony OLED's. Both sets are brilliant. The upscaling and motion were deciding factors in my decision. I like the remote and Web OS better on the LG. The remote on the Sony is very capable and I like more buttons than fewer so I can get the remote to do what I want...without having to scramble for directions but there is something about the remote on the LG W7. There is only one 3.5mm input for any older analog device (camcorder,Wii) that needs an Analog Extesion Cable-not provided. The Sony XBR65A1E is Outstanding!! This set has actually looked better in a home environment than it did in the store and it looked amazing in the store.
The installers from Magnolia did a superb job on my wall mount and my salesperson (George K) gets my appreciation.

Yes, my previous set was a 50" Pioneer Plasma Elite "Kuro" set, which is/was an excellent set. I was not going to 'upgrade" to a 4K set until I saw the Sony OLED.
I prefer the deeper blacks of Plasma and OLED and have never been captivated by LCD/LED sets. This is my personal preference. As my review stated, my reservation on OLED sets was motion, since I like to watch sports. Motion on the Sony is on a par with Pioneer. Picture quality and clarity on the Sony is beyond belief excellent and beyond the Pioneer. The Sony will take 1080i programming and upscale the picture to 4K quality. A 4K disc looks so good that it is astounding. I am unable to stream effectively in my neighborhood due to bandwidth limitations. If you can afford the Sony, it is worth the cost. Highly recommend the Sony.

How does this tv compare to 65 inch LG oled

There is an informative video from ABT (a retailer) on You Tube comparing the Sony 65A1E with LG's 65G7 side by side. Both are excellent sets. I prefer the upscaling of standard definition programming to 4K and the motion on the Sony. There is a second video comparing the Sony Z9D to the Sony OLED. Great side by side comparison.

How far back does the "kickstand" go? Wondering if it will fit on my TV stand.

The "spread" of the kickstand is listed at 16 inches.

Can you use your own speakers via your A/V receiver in lieu of the Sony speakers?

Yes, you can use external speakers with a Sony A1E. Audio Digital Optical Cable from TV to a receiver which drives the external speakers.
