One of the best new shows on TV
on June 29, 2013

I watched the pilot of Person of Interest with much trepidation. I like Jim Caviezel (and wondered where he had disappeared to!), and am always interested in a good thriller show or movie, but the plot almost sounded like a bad Minority Report rip-off. Watching it, the pilot certainly had promise - Caviezel certainly proved that he can carry a series like this, with an incredible and almost effortless Clint Eastwood-type performance, and Michael Emerson again shows what a terrific actor he is, but something just wasn't clicking. However, after several episodes, the series firmly established itself as one of the best shows on television. Caviezel and Emerson have developed a wonderful chemistry, and despite the tense, thrilling, and serious tone that surrounds the show, they bring a terrific levity and humor to the show when best necessary, and they are backed by a solid supporting cast, namely the gruff but increasingly-likable Kevin Chapman and Taraji P. Henson, as well as some great recurring antagonists whose identities I don't want to spoil. The writers also do an outstanding job of keeping the premise fresh and manage to mix it up regularly, taking a premise that could become stale and tired really quickly, but really find new things to throw at our heroes. Highly recommended!

Best action score in years
on June 29, 2013
Posted by: BrianC007
Oscar-nominated composer Marco Beltrami had some very big shoes to fill when taking over the composing duties for 2007's Live Free or Die Hard - the late Michael Kamen (who had written the scores for the first three films, and had sadly passed in 2003) had created a distinct style and sound for the Die Hard world that had gained a massive number of fans in the film music community. However, Beltrami proved himself to be up to the challenge, by creating an exciting rollercoaster of an action score. It was certainly more aggressive than any of Kamen's efforts, but Beltrami managed to weave in Kamen's themes and styles throughout his score, making it fit perfectly. So when he was attached to return for the 5th Die Hard film, A Good Day to Die Hard, I could not have been more excited. And imagine what a thrill it was to receive the CD, and not only have your expectations met, but surpassed.
A Good Day to Die Hard is easily one of the best action scores in years, which sadly isn't saying much. In a day where all film scores have become typically generic and unmemorable, especially action scores, Beltrami created something really special, with truly outstanding action cues that get your heart pounding (they make for great driving music!), and again, all while taking the sound and themes that Michael Kamen created years before and making it bigger and bolder. This is an outstanding action score, and should be sought out by all film music fans!

A true modern gaming classic

As a Playstation owner, I have been hearing so much about the Mass Effect series for years. When the second one finally made its way to the PS3, I was interested, but heard that the storyline continues from the first one, and that you could even carry over your save file from the first game and have that effect events in the second one. As the first game was not available at that time, I held off, hoping that maybe one day Bioware would bring the whole series to the PS3.
And I'm glad that for once, my patience was rewarded.
Once the Mass Effect Trilogy set was announced, I had to get it. I didn't even really know too much about the games specifically, other than they were sci-fi action/RPGs, but based on all the great reviews I kept hearing, it sounded like it was worth a shot.
Now, the first game takes a bit to really get into - the gameplay is slow at times, and the side missions can get really tedious and repetitive. However, the characters and story manage to really pull you in, and before you know it, you're thrown headfirst into the action, and the action picks up.
Mass Effect 2 ups the ante in so many ways, it's hard to describe without rambling. The gameplay has been tweaked, eliminating some of the problems with the first game, almost to the point of making the game more of an action game than an RPG. The combat system is greatly improved, and the level-up system has been overhauled, but you still have much to work with in terms of customizing your experience. And very importantly, the characters that we have come to know and love (as well as some new ones) just continue to grow, and the story gets us even more involved.
As for Mass Effect 3, it seems to have mixed reactions among players. I personally enjoyed it immensely. The gameplay is identical to that of the second game, and storywise, I thought the game brought the arc to a satisfying close.
It's really hard to fully describe the experience, as on some level, everyone will have their own unique Mass Effect experience, which is part of the fun of the games. You can create the character, Commander Shepard, to however you want him or her to look like, choose from a variety of romantic interests, and play it like a boyscout soldier or a rough, hardass rogue. Playing the game with this much customization helps really immerse you in the experience, almost to the point where you really feel like you ARE Shepard, and these characters have become your friends. Overall, one of the most epic gaming series that have come along, and truly needs to be experienced by all gamers.

Fun take on the "found footage" genre
on June 16, 2013
Posted by: BrianC007
I first heard about this movie from acclaimed British film critic Mark Kermode, and as it came with his high recommendation, and I'm a fan of Scandinavian novels and films, at $8 for the Blu-ray, how can you go wrong?
"Troll Hunter" is a Norwegian found-footage "documentary" about three college students who come across, as the title would suggest, a man who hunts trolls for the government and keeps them in line. The film maintains a very serious and straight-faced approach overall, but also manages to lighten up the mood occasionally with plenty of humor, but not to the detriment of the action going on on-screen. The actors sell the material perfectly, and while we have certainly had quite an over-exposure of the whole "found footage" genre of late, "Troll Hunter" manages to come up with something fresh and different than its Hollywood cousins - it takes a classic myth and puts it firmly in today's context with fun results.

I was one of the few who actually hadn't seen Shaun of the Dead by the time Hot Fuzz came out, but I was really excited to see it, as a fan of action films and off-beat British comedies. When I finally did see it, I enjoyed it, and upon watching it repeatedly afterwards, found a movie that gets better every time. Writers Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg wrote such an intricate script for Hot Fuzz, giving us a comedy that sets up many of its jokes sometimes as much as an hour before the punchline. And a script is only as good as the film's cast, and in this case, Wright managed to round up an amazing ensemble, from the principle cast (Pegg and Nick Frost, police played by Jim Broadbent, Paddy Considine, Rafe Spall to mention a few) to the local townsfolk (Timothy Dalton, Billie Whitelaw, Edward Woodward, and more) to even some small cameos (Bill Nighy, Martin Freeman, Steve Coogan, and even Peter Jackson and Cate Winslet, both cleverly disguised).
While this is certainly a spoof of buddy cop action movies in the Jerry Bruckheimer mold, this is not the sole influence on the film. The film draws from many other sources as well, such as horror/thriller films, and at one point Hot Fuzz takes on an Agatha Christie "whodunnit" style, until erupting into utter (and wonderful) chaos.
And I have to mention Edgar Wright's cinematic style. Wright has fast become one of my favorite directors - his visual style and flair has a very flashy and polished look, which gives it an almost ironic superficial feel, but what I love about his work is that it's never style over substance. If you look beneath that surface, there is a great story here with wonderful characters that you connect with, that Wright (along with co-writer Pegg, of course) develops wonderfully.
As for the disc, I don't think you can find a DVD with a better load of special features. First off, you get a hilarious batch of outtakes (expect no less from such a hilarious bunch of people), a making-of documentry, a slew of web videos from while production was filming, deleted scenes, a cop film called "Dead Right", which Edgar Wright made while he was a high school student, and a feature-length documentary called "The Fuzzball Rally", which follows Wright, Pegg, and co-star Nick Frost on their US press tour for the film, which is absolutely hilarious, and is mandatory viewing for fans.
All in all, an excellent film and disc, and a tremendous value.

Things keep heating up in Westeros...

Continuing into its second season - based on the second novel in the series, A Clash of Kings - Game of Thrones continues to be an excellent series. Here, the show begins to deviate a bit from the source material, taking more liberties than the first season did, but still remains very loyal to George RR Martin's text. The acting is the real highlight here, with a seemingly endless roster of characters, all portrayed by outstanding actors, who really bring the material to life.
HBO provides another stunning Blu-ray with Season Two. The picture quality could not be any better. This series must be watched in HD to be believed.

Bond is here to stay
on May 7, 2013

As a long-time Bond fan, coming from a family of Bond fans, every new James Bond film is an event, and Skyfall was no exception. Celebrating the Bond franchise's 50th anniversary, this 23rd Bond film managed to celebrate the franchise and bringing back some retro elements whilst giving us something that felt fresh and new, a true Bond for the 21st century.
Despite being a film fan, I have never seen a Sam Mendes film prior to Skyfall, so his announcement as director neither excited nor discouraged me, though knowing him as mostly a dramatic film director, I wasn't sure if he could pull off an exciting action-adventure. However, I was proven wrong. One of the things that Sam Mendes was set on doing was making a Bond film where the action set pieces came naturally, and were not just simply a case of "Okay, we'll put a car chase here, and a shoot out here, and work around that". The action sequences (particularly the incredible, heart-pounding pre-credits sequence) feel very organic and part of the story instead of shoe-horned in.
But at the same time, Mendes gives us a very thoughtful, and at times, emotional Bond experience. Bond develops wonderful relationships with the rest of the characters (and Craig enjoys wonderful chemistry with the rest of his cast), and by the time you get to the end, you'll feel like you went on a journey with him.
Special mention must go to Roger Deakins, whose cinematography is absolutely stunning, and it was a crime that he did not win the Oscar. This is truly one of the best looking Bond movies ever, with striking, beautiful visuals that manages to take that exotic, international Bond style and take it one step further. Check out the fight between Bond and henchman Patrice, which takes place in front of a giant neon screen, so they are shown entirely in silhouette.
Now as for the Blu-ray itself, it'd be difficult for you to find a better one. The video is absolutely incredible and could possibly be one of the best Blu-rays I have ever seen, and the audio is outstanding - if you have any kind of sound system, pump it up for this one. Your house will be shaking, and you'll be hearing it from every room, and you'll love it.

Outstanding Blu-ray of a classic film
on April 13, 2013
Posted by: BrianC007
I had never seen Lawrence of Arabia, though at nearly four hours long, I'm glad that I waited until I was older to appreciate it. And I'm even more glad that I waited to see it on this outstanding Blu-ray release. While a bit long, Lawrence still moves along well and features an incredible cast, particularly Peter O'Toole in his film debut (hard to believe!). The restoration on this disc is phenomenal, you get the true scope of the cinematography, and I don't think it could look any better. If you are a film buff and haven't seen it, it's a must see, especially on this medium.
