Great Sound...Not Great Picture

I purchased a top of the line Sony 4k Ultra HD TV with 240hz refresh and High Dynamic Range so I decided to revamp my entire theater system. I love Sony and already have an older Sony theater system so I decided to upgrade to this receiver and use my already installed Sony speaker system. I was pleasantly surprised in some areas and also disappointed in other areas. Here are my breakdowns:
Happy- The system is easy to use once set up. You can easily flip through your inputs without much confusion (TV, Cable, Blu Ray, etc).
Disappointed- It's not easy to set up mainly because the speaker wire inputs in the back are difficult to access. It definitely took me longer than usual to get everything plugged in because of the layout.
Happy- Sound quality is what you would expect from Sony. The thing cranks and maintains the integrity of the sound without distortion.
Disappointed- The sub-woofer out is not powered. My speaker system does not have a powered sub-woofer because it was powered from the DVD player receiver that came with the system. I have to purchase a separate powered sub-woofer to go with this.
Happy- The range of sound options exceeded my expectations. Whether I'm watching football, a movie, Netflix, or just music from my phone, I can find a great setting for fantastic sound.
Disappointed- The video pass through is not true 4k Ultra HD. When watching a 4K UHD movie I couldn't tell any difference between 4k and standard HD. I thought this whole 4k thing was a crock. Then I decided to plug my Blu Ray player directly into my TV and just run the sound separately to the receiver and...wow! 4k is amazing! The same was the case for watching TV. The picture was much better when I ran my cable box directly to my TV and just sent the sound to the receiver. Optimal set up is to use this receiver for just that...a sound receiver and not to pass through video.
My overall take on this receiver is if you are looking for a great 7.1 channel receiver that is easy to use, has great sound, and cranks volume...you can't beat it for the price and I certainly recommend it! If you are insistent on running the video pass thru with your receiver I would keep looking for a more expensive rig.

Good so far...

I had originally purchased a 50" Hisense with the same specs as this Vizio for the same price. They both had similar reviews so I figured for the same price, an extra 10 inches is always nice. A few hours later, I was exchanging the Hisense for this Vizio and I am much happier. The HD picture is comparable to other HD TV's with standard television but it's sports where I noticed a huge difference. Sunday Night Football was crystal clear! It takes some tweeking of settings to get it to your liking but after playing around with it for about an hour I am extremely happy with the picture during sports. The apps are very easy to use and the set up is very easy as well. My only critique is that I don't see where you can easily download apps. Maybe you can't. But it does come with Netflix, HULU, Pandora, YouTube, and a bunch of others so you're pretty covered. I do put it through a Sony surround sound system but the sound is not bad at all for the price of the TV. Eventually I will probably upgrade to a Samsung (in my opinion they have the best quality picture for live sports of any brand) but for now I am very happy with this TV and for the price, you can't beat it.

Great picture...except for live sports

I bought this TV on sale after Christmas for the $349 special. I loved that size and the features were everything I was looking for. A smart TV with 120hz+ refresh rate for a great price. The reviews were good so I went for it. Three hours later I was returning it. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is because the HD picture was beautiful when using Netflix and YouTube. Exceptional quality. However, when using normal TV (watching Modern Family) it seemed to "skip" as if resetting the picture. I got online to see if I could adjust this. I replaced HDMI cables, I changed some settings and it got better, but did not completely fix the problem. The big reason I got this TV was for live sports. The HD picture during the close up shots AFTER the play were exceptional quality. The full field/court view during action of the game was terrible quality. It did not look like HD, there was a ton of "ghosting" even with the clear motion 480 on, it looked extremely pixelated, especially around the players. I changed every setting there was but could never get it to look full HD. I tried different channels and went back and forth between basketball and football with the same result. The skipping thing was terrible during live sports as well, especially during slow motion replay. The bottom line was the full action of sports did not have a good picture. I ended up returning it for a 40" Vizio which has the same specs for the same price and am much happier with it. Great picture for streaming Netflix, HULU, and YouTube...not good for watching actual TV.

BLOWN AWAY!
on October 7, 2013

I stumbled across this album upon a Pandora recommendation being a big Dream Theater, Kamelot, and Nightwish fan and I was absolutely blown away by these guys! It's not progressive as I typically go for, but it's saturated with talent and an incredible blend of high energy modern electronica and metal. They have three lead singers with different abilities. Fronted mainly by female vocalist Elize Ryd she is joined by two other male singers. Jake E does the clean male vocals and Andreas Sovenstrom does the screaming. Why is this awesome? Because most other bands featuring screaming vocals such as Asking Alexandria or All That Remains have the same guy doing both which doesn't work very well. The screaming takes too much of a toll on the vocals live and ruins his clean voice so when he tries to sing live, the clean vocals are generally pitchy and weak whereas this band has nailed it.
As far as sound I would describe them as if Kamelot, Static-X, and Asking Alexandria had a love child with a female lead singer. They have a great blend of all three vocals which give them a dynamic sound to sound super heavy at times and then metal pop at other times. The entire thing is very high energy and an audio assault from start to finish. The musicians are super talented. The guitar work is done cleanly and very well. Although the drummer makes it sound easy, don't be fooled, he is doing some very technical time signatures and doing some more technical beat work even in the standard 4 or 2 times.
The way they couple the computer electronica with the heavy sound is done better than I've heard many bands. Don't misunderstand, it's not dub step so you're not gonna get Korn with a DJ sound. I definitely recommend this album for those who love female vocals with heavy melodic metal. Frankly, I just found my new work out album!
What's great about it: Taking it to eleven high energy melodic metal

A Solid Outing

Dream Theater is by far my favorite band. As a musician, I feel they are the most technically proficient band ever put together. I have loved them from the very beginning. With that said, they have had to slowly win my confidence back after "Systematic Chaos" (seriously, what was that?#. I have to say they are definitely back on track!
After Portnoy left, I wasn't sure how they would continue to play such technically proficient music. Although Mangini is not as technically proficient as Portnoy #in my opinion#, he definitely holds his own and the band's sound is not compromised at all. "A Dramatic Turn of Events" was a fantastic album and their self titled album is an equally solid effort.
The great thing about this album is that they returned to their roots of instrumentals #such as "Erotomania" and "Stream of Consciousness"# and epics #"Octavarium" anyone?"#. They also clearly returned to their influences where more than one song sounds very similar to RUSH. This is definitely the DT album for true Rush fans. Lyrically it's much better than some previous outings such as "Systematic Chaos" and "Black Clouds and Silver Linings". There are some deep lyrics which hit home for me.
Of course they go on their instrumental explorations which wow the mere mortal musician such as myself and remind me why I continue to try hard to get better at guitar.
I do have a 1,000 watt surround sound system and the 5.1 DVD mix is awesome to listen to and well worth the extra $4. I can play the normal DVD in my car and when I'm home listen to the mix made for my surround.
My critique is that I'm not a huge fan of the darker 7 string non-melodic direction they've been going ever since "Dark Clouds..." I'm also not a big fan of the drum mix. I feel it's too light and punchy and lacks the depth of previous albums. That's probably a result of Portnoy not being a producer and thus not mixing his own instrument higher than everyone else. The advantage is that everyone else is mixed much better.
It isn't my favorite DT album #that would be "Train of Thought"# but it is definitely a very solid outing and I'm glad I picked this bad boy up. If you are a Dream Theater die hard or just getting into the band, you will enjoy this album. It's well worth spending $10 or $15 to rock!

Not what we expected
By Disappointed
After doing research, we finally decided on the hisense 50 inch smart tv. Got the tv home and were overall pleased at the ease of set up and the picture. After going through the apps and searching, we realized the tv didn't have Amazon and couldn't find a way to download it, we had decided to return it because of that....but we had decided to watch a show on it to see the quality, this tv buffered about every 5 min. Very frustrating and a big disappointment after reading such good reviews

Same Experience
December 28, 2015
I had the same experience with it "buffering" or "skipping" while trying to watch normal TV. I ended up returning it and getting a 40" Vizio with the same specs and am much happier with it.

Doesn't this display actually have a 60hz native refresh rate?

BestBuy lists this TV's display as having a 120hz refresh rate. I believe, however, that while VIZIO says it has a 120hz "effective rate," the actual (native) refresh rate is 60hz. Can you verify this?
I believe this TV is 120hz native refresh rate. It is listed as such with the "Clear Motion 240" as the "fake refresh rate". I do notice a difference while watching sports with this TV vs my 60hz refresh rate TV so I'm pretty positive this is 120hz native with the options to turn on "Clear Motion 240"

What does smart capabilities mean?

Smart capabilities simply means that it can connect to the internet and use apps like your phone or computer uses apps. Prior to "Smart TV's" you would have to connect your computer to the TV using and HDMI cable to watch Netflix, HULU, YouTube, etc on your TV. Now, TV's have these built in which is called "Smart Capabilities."
