Great travel tripod for heavier gear.

I am a fan of Manfrotto products and have a full size set of their legs for work that doesn't require hiking as they are heavy at 6.5 pounds. I had looked numerous times at their befree tripod and never pulled the trigger. I just saw the new Mefoto road trip last week at the MOA Best Buy and had to get one. The ball head is so fluid in its movement and tightens down with authority. It is rated for 15lbs and I believe it, the one leg removes and becomes a monopod and the tripod has a very useful ballast hook for adding weight and stabilising more. Also came with a nice fully padded bag, and spikes with a wrench for uneven rough terrain. It is made in China but doesn't feel like it. It's honestly nicer than the Manfrotto befree. Yeah it's 2 bills, but your gear was or ably quite a bit more, and if you do landscape and low light or time lapse a good sturdy rig that only weighs about 3.5-4 lbs is great!

More than I was expecting!

Being a big audiophile, it was time to upgrade from my Marantz CD6004 to the SA8005. I was expecting great sound from SACD and maybe a slight pickup off of standard "red book" cd's. What I got was a huge bump on standard cd to the point that my standard "Dark Side of the Moon" CD sounds almost as detailed and smooth as the 30th Annoversay SACD version I own. The build quality is second to none at this price point. Yes you may ask who spends 1200 dollars on a CD player? I do because I love listening to music and the time that is spent choosing an album and then looking at the cover while listening is my favourite way to unwind after the day is done! If music is important and you have a high quality integrated amplifier to match "PM8005" you will truly me taken back in time to when music really was music and all of the warmth and nuances to the sound made it great!

High Value Power Cable!
on September 16, 2013

The NRG 4 by Audioquest is a great PC for someone that is building a very nice mid-end system. I am using three of these Power Cables in my system right now. One on my Marantz CD6004, one on the Marantz PM8004 and one going into my Furman Elite 15PFI.
Power cables are not going to change frequencies or anything like that, this is NOT snake oil marketing here. What this cable will do is allow for a deeper black background to your audio listening and also improving imaging on the soundstage aspect. I had started with a NRG-2 and NRG-4 after letting a friend switch cables around while I was not able to see I picked the NRG-4 5 for 5 times in blind listening. Yes they cost a bit, but so does drinking starbucks and booze! When You see and hold these AQ cables you realize your purchasing something that will be in your system for many decades!
What's great about it: Performance per dollar, build quality.
What's not so great: Nothing, its less expensive then many of its competitors and does better than most!
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great lens, not for beginners (like me...)
By Douglas from Philadelphia, PA
My wife bought me this lens as an anniversary present because she did research online for a great lens for taking night shots. This lens came up time and time again as a great lower cost alternative to some of the other lenses that were out there.
I am just starting to get into amateur photography, and have a Nikon D3100 camera body. So far I've taken a few photos with this new lens, and the pictures that have come out have been fantastically detailed.
You noticed "that have come out"... didn't you? That's where the 4 instead of 5 stars comes in... this lens has a pretty big learning curve for beginners like me, but when you get "the shot" it looks fantastic!! Mainly the issue comes from the fact that the lens is 100% Manual focus, and when you have the aperture open wide the depth of field is really shallow... this makes taking shots rather frustrating at first. I've probably kept twenty-five percent of my photos so far.
However, the quality of the photo, the construction of the product, and the overall craftsmanship of this lens is really great. Enjoy the great photos you will definitely get... eventually!!

Some hints.

While normally a fast 1.4 lens would give you a shallow depth of field, a wide angle DOF is larger due to field of view. For night shots, the best thing with manual focus lens' is set focus ring to "infinity" it should look like a side ways 8. Take a sample shot, if its not sharp in the center, refocus the focus ring ever so slightly back from infinity, some lens' at this cost will not be perfectly calibrated to infinity when they leave the factory. Lastly understand that because you are using this on an APS-C sensor camera your really shooting at a 35mm focal length or so, which is turn is narrowing your DOF a little too. There is a 16mm version of this lens that would give you the Ultra Wide 24mm FOV that this lens gives on a Full Frame camera vs Crop sensor camera. Good Luck shooting!
