I honestly disagree with the reviews on this lens... I love the f1.8 capability and the fact it takes great quality pictures! If I would have to get any lens that shoots good and doesn't hurt my pocket this is a must have!!!

I got this for someone who doesn't use technology much. They love it and it works great for what it needs to do. Handles all the small things well. I would not recommend running anything heavy on this but it still does the small things you would want it to do.

Decent lens, slow focus

I'm a Nikon guy, but i bought a Sony for traveling. I was just going to use the kit lens with my A7II for everything but i know there will be situations where i want to shoot in low light and the kit 28-70 wont work.
Price: It's a little expensive. $250 is more expensive than the Nikon G, Nikon D or Canon EF 50mm equivalents
Quality: The lens is sharp. On par with the others. Focus is somewhat slow compared to the other systems. Focus in LOW light is pretty terrible. I was shooting an engagement at the blue hour and towards the end I was shooting at 1250 ISO and it couldn't focus anymore.
There really aren't any alternatives. Sony is still working on building their lens arsenal. 55mm Zeiss is one option but i would never pay nearly $1000 for a 50mm F1,8 Sony just announced at 50 f2.8 Macro that sounds interesting but thats still a F2.8 not F1.8.
