Every choice matters.

When I first came across this film, I expected a half-decent crime drama to kill two and a half hours of my time with. I was nowhere close to expecting the great experience I ended up having. During the first half hour, I smugly thought I knew exactly where this story was headed, but by the end of the first act, I was on the edge of my seat wondering what the hell was going to happen next. There are so many ways to describe the film that any one-sentence summary would not be completely accurate. This is more than just a typical crime drama. It is often a meditation on life and the importance of the decisions we make. Top-notch!
My Best Buy number: 2174145525
What's great about it: Plot, structure, atmosphere, music, cinematography, performances
What's not so great: Is it really that hard to add non-SDH subtitles? Some dialogue is impossible to comprehend without home-theater audio

A truly one-of-a-kind rarity

When I first heard of "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset", I had never come across a single film that completely focused on a series of conversations between two individuals. I was fascinated by the concept after learning about the structure of those two films, though I was concerned that they might turn out to be boring. Ultimately, I sufficiently enjoyed "Sunrise" even if I was not head-over-heels for it. I enjoyed "Sunset" more than I did for "Sunrise", though I also was not absolutely crazy for this one either. After watching "Before Midnight", I was completely blown away. This is hands down the best one of the three. Although the atmosphere and general characteristics are undeniably consistent throughout all three films, something about the third one worked best. The dialogue in "Midnight" is engaging and often enlightening. All conversations are nothing short of thoughtful, and the ideas and words shared from one character to another all feel genuine and truthful, if at times painful. I certainly hope that Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy all choose to continue this saga for a few more decades, even if it takes them 9 years to do each one. A spectacular gem that undoubtedly deserved more nominations from the Golden Globes or Oscars.

What's great about it: Dialogue, acting, unconventional nature
What's not so great: some won't be able to handle the film's pace or structure

Astonishingly underrated gem

It is baffling to me how little attention this film has garnered since its release. ZERO nominations from the Golden Globes OR the Academy Awards? I'm not arguing that this film absolutely deserves to win best picture over all other films released this year, but it is undoubtedly better than some of the films that actually were nominated for Best Picture. If not Best Picture, the film deserves a nomination from at least ANY of the categories such as cinematography, original score, or acting. This is a fantastically poetic and emotional journey of an outlaw's desperate effort to reunite with his family and fix his life. On the downside, the film is definitely not for people who cannot handle a deliberately slow-paced film structure. One personal complaint (though it's definitely not applicable to everyone) from me, and I have this complaint for many blu-ray releases, is the limited options for subtitles. Because I do not have additional speakers aside from the ones attached to the HDTV, it is often times difficult to balance out the volume of dialogue with other sound effects, which makes it a chore to comprehend dialogue at times, and so a non-SDH English subtitle track would make life easier for many people. But I digress. All in all, a wonderful film and definitely one of my favorites of all time.

What's not so great: perhaps not for everyone; subtitles

Another work of art from Malick

After falling in love with The Tree of Life and The Thin Red Line, I became an avid fan of Terrence Malick's films. "To the Wonder" was the third Malick film I had the chance of watching, and it was perhaps my excessively high expectations or the beautiful trailer that preceded the film's premiere, but I was at first underwhelmed. Eventually, the film grew on me and I wanted to watch it again, with the second viewing turning out to be more rewarding than the first. A very intimate look into an intimate relationships and the challenges that follow them.

What's great about it: Cinematography, atmosphere, unconventional narrative
What's not so great: Not Malick's absolute best

This film is excellent in many aspects. Naomi Watt's performance is exceptional. Very emotionally engaging and also emotionally draining, but definitely worthwhile.
