I have never read the book this was based on but the film has to have done it justice. This is one of the best suspense thrillers I have ever seen. It has this surreal kind of creepiness that can seep into your whole being as you watch this film. I love atmospheric creepiness that can unnerve you and this film has that.
Johanna ter Steege won a European Film award for best supporting actress despite only actual having 11 minutes of screen time. That is in incredible! That is a microcosm of quality of performances in this movie. The acting, direction, and everything about this movie makes it a must own!
The PQ and AQ are both reference quality, which is the case with The Criterion Collection anytime the source material at all allows it. If they can clean up a source they clean it up as much as humanly possible and this transfer is masterful. Unusually for Criterion the extras are not large in quantity here but still some very interesting stuff.
***The previous reviewer states that you see the perspective of the bad guy. The way it's stated it could be misunderstood. This movie shows BOTH perspectives of the good guy AND the bad guy, which as the previous viewer said IS very unique. I just wanted to make sure everyone knows that this film shows a parallel tract throughout the movie.
This is my favorite Western, period, and not just my favorite John Wayne western. I really like Rio Bravo, The Searchers, True Grit, Stagecoach, the Dollars Trilogy (Clint Eastwood), and the list goes on; but this is my favorite. Maybe I am biased towards wagon-train/traveling by wagon adventures and cattle drive movies, though. My favorite John Wayne movies are this and Stagecoach.
I just feel like I am back in the old west on a cattle drive watching Red River. The fact that they filmed these old westerns on location really creates a great atmospheric feel. This is a less bombastic and more nuanced (but still powerful) performance by John Wayne, showing that he he could really act if he tried.
This is the best Rocky franchise movie since the original. I would put it on par with the original. Growing up in the 80s I didn't quite grow up on the Rocky movies. The franchise started a little before my time so I don't quite have that 'grown up on' nostalgia and I think I enter into this review without bias.
If Rocky is 4* and this is not, it is 3.9*. This is a great movie and Michael B Jordan was snubbed by not at least being nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars. Sylvester Stallone was snubbed by not WINNING Best Supporting Actor. although Stallone is just as known for his slew of action movies as he is for the Rocky franchise, he proves again that he most certainly has some very serious acting chops.
Creed is just as inspiring as the original, but has TWO very inspiring and superbly acted story-lines with the intersecting stories of Adonis Creed and Rocky Balboa both battling their own struggles. As Adonis Creed Michael B Jordan brings an equally powerfully emotional struggle to Creed as Stallone did to the original Rocky, though it is maybe just slightly more nuanced and internally contained.
The blu ray presentation is top-notch. Might be reference quality audio and video but with it being dialogue-driven for the audio and a lot of scenes happening indoors - sometimes in less than perfect lighting - the film doesn't have the opportunity to be reference quality just because of the material. Both the audio and video presentations, however, are as good as they can get for considering the source material. Fantastic audio and video presentations!
