Good Camera still waiting on some features
on November 7, 2023
Posted by: ViperElectric
Let’s start with the easy stuff, install. Installation is super easy if you use the included OBD connector cable. Although this assumes you’re not using the OBD port for something else already since you can only have one thing plugged into it at a time but otherwise its quick and easy one wire to run and that’s it. I will note though that the larger base of the camera, the part that mounts to the window, might be somewhat problematic if your car has a large tunnel or camera cover in the middle of the window. My car has this, and it means that the camera sits a little more off center than I would normally like but the wide angle view means even with that I still get everything in front of the car as expected from a dash cam. One other note they do include a standard hardwire kit with a bunch of different fuse tap sizes as well you just have to make sure you have a good ground point nearby if you’re going to do it that way. Overall, I like the flexible options they give you for wiring up the camera and it’s really a set it and forget it kind of install because of that.
Once the camera is installed setup is super easy as well. Just install the app on your phone and follow the prompts which include scanning a QR code on the device to “pair” it to the app. The camera has a cell connection, so it uses that to do all the initial setup. I will note that you should make sure you have a decent amount of time set aside for this because it will want to update the cameras firmware in the process and that can take a little bit of time. Also, I imagine if you live in an area with weak cell coverage this process might be a little more painful.
Now just as a note to get the “full” functionality of this camera you do need to subscribe to their service for it of which there are two tiers but that’s mainly because a lot of the features are cloud based and require the cell service and I’m assuming that monthly/annual fee covers the cost involved in those things. I’m not going to comment on the monthly cost in this review because at the time of testing not all the features of the service are done yet (this review being done in early November 2023). The “Guardian Mode” and “Roadwatch A.I.” are both still listed as “Coming Soon” whatever timeframe that means I have no idea so just keep that in mind if you’re looking to buy this camera. It does seem like you get a three month “trial” subscription though so that’s a plus if you use it and find out you really don’t care about those features.
As for the camera function itself, the video quality on the 4K unit I have is pretty good for a dash cam, and even facing directly into a setting sun it was capable of still giving a decent enough camera image to tell what was going on in front of the vehicle. Now to get the best quality video you do need to take time to download a high-quality version of the clips since most of the previews are lower quality. This seems reasonable since you’re getting the initial clips through a cell connection. Also, the parking mode is nice to have especially if you live in an apartment or something and can’t keep an eye on your car all the time. It’s nice having that extra little bit coverage if something does happen.
Overall I think this is a decent camera I just wish all the advertised features where actually ready to use. For the features I could use the remote access to the camera through the app when I’m not near the car is nice and the parking feature (because of the constant power from the OBD) is great too. I think once all the features are available to use this will be a great dashcam overall until then it’s qualifies as a “good” buy in my book.

Great Performance with some minor complaints
on August 31, 2023
Posted by: ViperElectric
Let’s start off with the few criticisms I have about this laptop. My biggest complaint is that the palm rejection on the mouse pad is bad. I would say if you needed to do a lot of typing it might be best to disable the mouse pad and use a normal mouse while doing that instead. Basically, what happens is if you just barely touch the mouse surface while typing it will relocate your mouse cursor and you end up typing in a totally different area. If you’re not doing a bunch of typing the touchpads seems fine and I don’t have any complaints. Honestly though if you’re using this to game, you’re probably not using the touchpad for your mouse anyway so in that case it’s not the worst deal. Another complaint is that while the performance of this laptop is amazing (outperforming my desktop gaming computer in almost every way) that comes at a cost. Heat, and with that heat the noise from the fans. The fans on this laptop do a great job of trying to keep the heat in check but they can be loud when you are gaming. If your using headphones, then you probably won’t notice it. But in a normally quiet room I would say the fans are very noticeable. One other note with heat, the area just above the keyboard between the top of the keyboard and the screen can get very hot. Like I would not want to hold my hand on it for more than a few seconds kind of hot. That’s not normally an area you’re going to touch but I wanted to make a note of it anyway. One final complaint before the good stuff is the speakers. While they are loud and normally fairly clear they tend to be a little on the “empty” side. The sound is lacking in any sort of real low end or base and it makes most things sound kind of “tinny” in my opinion.
Alright with that stuff out of the way (which don’t get me wrong is kind of a bummer on a laptop in this price range) let’s get to the good stuff.
Performance. There is not much else to be said here with the maxed-out specs on this laptop of the 13950hx processor and the 4090-laptop graphics this thing screams performance wise. In all honesty it outperforms a desktop computer from just last year and that’s impressive in the form factor you get here. I’ve had plenty of hour’s gaming so far with basically no issues whatsoever (other than the above stated items which I don’t have an issue with when gaming because I use a headset and a separate mouse). FPS has been solid and consistent and loading times have also been very good. One thing I will note which I personally like but some people might not, is with the 2TB storage version it’s not a single 2tb drive it’s two 1tb drives one with the OS and recovery stuff on it and the second is just included as raw storage. So, I’ve just set the second storage drive as my default location to install and run steam games as well as all the other launchers out there, works out great actually.
Another bright point (pun intended) is the display. Out of the box it’s set to the 4k 120hz mode and to be honest I love it. It’s super bright and has been very nice to look at almost all the time. If you’re looking for the fastest refresh rates though you will want to switch to the 1080p 240hz mode in the synapse software. This does require a system reboot to accomplish but once it’s done that’s the native resolution and there are no weird scaling issues or anything. I love the higher resolution display so personally I stick with that but in twitchy games I could see the other mode working out great as well.
Overall, I would say if you’re looking for full gaming performance in a laptop formfactor then sure this is a viable option the performance is amazing but as I’ve stated above it’s not perfect and at this price point I feel like a few of these things could be better. Razer owns THX now why are the speakers not better? Maybe it’s the matted desk surface I have it on and a solid table would sound better but in general I would just expect more at this price. And the track pad well that’s still my biggest complaint. I feel it can probably be fixed with some more firmware tuning but it’s fairly annoying to have to turn the thing off completely just t be able to type out a paper without getting frustrated. If you can overlook those things and price is not a problem for you then it’s hard to go wrong with this choice though.

Good headset with a few minor gripes.
on May 24, 2023
Posted by: ViperElectric
Like most people I feel in more recent times, I’ve used a lot of headphones, and the one thing that is always the most important thing is not the sound but the comfort and build quality. At least in my opinion anyway, these headphones cover that base totally. The cloth ear cups while a little warm at times are very comfortable. If I’m wearing the headset I don’t feel like I need to take it off and take a break at all, which is great for those long gaming sessions. Sound wise they sound decent, they are not audiophile headphones so I don’t expect them to be that good but they give good sound in all the right places and honestly once I have been wearing them for a while I almost forget they are on, and that I’m listening to headphones so I would say its good. The mic quality is also really good for a gaming headset, the only complaint I really have is that the mic arm is not quite long enough for my head shape so instead of sitting in front of my mouth where I would normally like it to be it is off to the side. This can cause me to sound quiet to my teammates while playing sometimes and I either have to speak louder or try to pull it closer to my mouth, neither of which is a great solution. The other great thing is I’ve not had a single issue with wireless dropouts or anything which is normally my biggest issue with wireless headsets. Overall I feel this is a great option if you’re looking for a good headset in general, the wireless nature just gives it that much more of an edge over some other options. One final thing that is an issue for me, as soon as you plug in the headset USB dongle the razer installer auto starts. This is really really annoying to me. Give me the option to click on an installer with an auto open folder sure but don’t run an installer as soon as the device is plugged in, that’s not great. The mic boom length and auto installer are the reason it gets docked a few stars Otherwise it's been a great headset.

Great coffee less hassle
on April 8, 2023
Posted by: ViperElectric
This machine while expensive has been one of the easiest to use expresso machines I have ever had, while still maintaining a decent quality coffee product. Obviously quality is in part the beans/coffee used but the brew process can affect the flavor a lot, and I have been pleasantly surprised by what I have managed to get out of this machine with very little fuss. One word of note I would say is don’t use your best coffee in the machine at first as you need to brew about 10 cups of espresso or coffee before the machine has fully adjusted itself. But after that adjustment period the coffee I have gotten has been good with essentially no adjustments or tinkering. I would say if you’re looking to get away from the Pod based machines, but are overwhelmed by the standard espresso machine with the whole girding and tamping process this is a very good option. You don’t even need to know how to foam milk as the machine will do it for you, and that also works great. Overall I’ve been very happy with the experience.

Best image quality I've seen.
on March 10, 2023

I’m someone who has only ever used LCD or CRT monitors, and I have to say I wish I would have switched an OLED panel sooner. The richness of the colors and the absolute blacks are just amazing. Even when not viewing HDR content this monitor makes everything look good. For the games I normally play response times are not super important but even still I can notice that everything seems just a tad bit snappier and more fluent. The higher refresh rate at 175 is kind of nice as well since it gets rid of some of that blurring effect I’m use to seeing. One other thing is I kind of like that fact that I can use it like I would a smart TV with apps for things like Netflix and Disney+ it’s convenient if I don’t feel like turning on my power hungry computer and just want to watch a TV show or a movie. There is really only two things I would criticize with this monitor, the available I/O while adequate, could be problematic if you loose the cable that comes with the monitor. The mini connector styles while nice and small don’t tend to be the extra cables I have laying around. The only other thing that was of note is the size of the power brick. It’s larger than some high power laptop power bricks I’ve had in the past and that is saying something. It’s absolutely massive and you might want to keep that in mind if you’re the type that likes to try and hide cables. It does at least look decent though with a nice finish so it’s not so bad sitting out on the desk.

Great Action Camera all around.
on October 18, 2022
Posted by: ViperElectric
I was looking for a camera to mount to my motorcycle helmet and this came across my path. I have to say at first, I was a little skeptical of the mounting system. Most of the time magnetic type mounts are great but with something that is going to see wind speeds of 70 miles an hour or more while riding down the highway, I must admit I was a little worried. All that worry though was for nothing, this mounting system they have is amazing the magnetic force helps line everything up and makes connecting the camera super easy and the two little side clips seem more than strong enough to hold everything in place even at speed. I was pleasantly surprised that along with an amazing mounting system the video quality out of this camera is really good. Switching from high light to low light situations like you might see while driving down the road the camera did really good to change the exposure and keep everything nice and visible. Even when essentially staring directly at the sun (driving into the sun in the afternoon evening) it did a great job of maintaining the image quality and keeping most everything visible even if it wasn’t to me. Another great feature that I use way more than I thought I would, is the quick switch button on the side of the camera. I set up 3 different profiles for different use cases and being able to quickly switch between them even when I’m wearing gloves is very useful. I was also surprised by the quality of the audio even in the wind. Most action cameras are not known for their audio quality, but I have to say for walking around and just talking to the camera the audio is surprisingly usable, even in slightly windy conditions the camera does a great job of filtering out most of the excess noise you would normally hear.
There are so many cool things about this camera that just work it’s hard to go through them all in a simple review but one thing I do want to bring up is the amazing battery life and system they have for charging those batteries with the Adventure combo. If you’re wondering if the combo is worth the little bit extra over just the camera I would 100% say yes almost solely because of the battery case and charging setup. The case that the three batteries you get in the combo come in is also the charger which is super convenient. But more than that it can also be used as a battery bank in those situations where your done filming for the day, but your phone needs a little juice. It’s super useful. As for battery life I was able to get over an hour and a half of continuous recording time without any problem, in fact I still had 35% battery remaining after that. I more than likely would have been able to get two full hours before even thinking about pulling another battery out of the case to swap. I’m super impressed with that as it means I can get a decent ride in before worrying about stopping to switch batteries over. If I had any gripes at all about the setup as a whole, it would only be that they don’t actually include a charging brick for the battery case. You must supply your own usb-c charger, but I guess that’s kind of the way the entire electronics industry has been going lately.
Overall if you're in the market for an action camera this is a seriously good offering from DJI.

Slight Lack of Adjustability but Otherwise Great
on September 7, 2022
Posted by: ViperElectric
I'll start with the good stuff. The headset is light comfortable and well it just works which is always a nice touch when it comes to stuff that is supposed to make your life easier or more fun. The Charging base is a great thing to be included since it means I never have to worry about fumbling to plug in a cable any time the battery gets low. Instead, I just drop the headset on the charging base when I'm not using it and I never have to worry about the batteries being dead when I want to use the headset. Another really nice feature is the fact that not only will this headset work with my XBOX without any fuss but I can also plug the base into my computer and use it for my computer gaming sessions as well. I don't do a lot of talking with online games but with the little I have done the mic is surprisingly not too bad which is a nice bonus. Sound wise this headset sounds just as good as ones from big name brands I could hardly tell the difference which is impressive considering those headsets can't be used with my Xbox as well.
If I had to have one downside to the headset there is a minor lack of adjustability which for most people won't be an issue but if you have a larger head, you might find the headset sits a little further up your ears than you might otherwise expect since the ear cups don't move on the headband the only "adjustment" is the cloth strap. I got lucky and the main body is just long enough that the headset sits right at ear level, but the cloth strap is totally pressed against the main body of the headset. It's still comfortable and I don't really notice it any, but if you have a larger head, it could possibly be an issue. Otherwise, this headset is great.

Great FPV Fun
on August 31, 2022
Posted by: ViperElectric
Of all the drones I have flown in my life ranging from upscale camera drones to drone designed for payload carrying, I have to say that this little Avata must be one of the most fun drones I have ever flown. Even amongst the FPV drones I have flown before this is still more entertaining and there are a few reasons for that I feel. First major reason is the way the drone is controlled. Most FPV drones use a normal two stick controller and controlling them can be a challenge sometimes but the amount of stuff you can do with that type of control scheme is amazing. So naturally I thought using the simple motion controller for the Avata would take away a lot of that fun and control, well I am glad to say I was wrong. The motion controller is so intuitive and easy to use, and it just make everything so effortless. Also, with the way DJI handles hovering with the Avata it also takes away some of the worry that you are going to ruin the drone if you get into sticky situations. That ease of use and simplicity inherently makes the drone more fun to fly, for me at least.
Another thing about the Avata that really makes it a winning package for me is the included camera. I do not feel the need to attach a GoPro to the top of the drone to get the footage I want. The image clarity and stabilization are on par or better than some of the footage I would be able to get with a GoPro attached to another FPV drone. The Horizon Lock feature is also cool if you just want nice shots without the side to side motion of turns involved.
But the real star of the show here is the ease of use and performance you can get with the drone while flying indoors. The prop guards are a terrific addition to this drone and really give a nice layer of protection for those tight shots. Using this drone for things like house tours or factory flythroughs is amazing and just as simple as a normal outdoor flight. Even the few times I did manage to bump into walls or doors was no issue because the Avata just bounces off the surface and keeps going on its merry way. I would also like to note that even in a decently sized office building I never saw any communications issues with the drone even through several walls with a mix of inside to outside flights.
A nice added feature is the SD Card slot on the goggles, it’s nice to be able to have that video just in case something happens to the drone during flight, and you can’t recover the original footage. It also allows you to show people what you see during your flight time with the original overlays available as a possibility for recording.
There are one or two things that could be better but are not dealbreakers. The first issue was trying to get an SD card into the drone if you want to record to something other than the internal memory. The slot where the SD card needs to go is shoved inside the prop guard and you must move the prop out of the way properly to even get to the door to open it. It was annoying. The only other issue was initial setup can be a little clunky because to do updates and stuff you need to pair the drone with your goggles, then attach your phone to the goggles and run the DJI app before you can run the update. Once you have the drone and goggles paired with your DJI account and app and everything has been updated it’s not really an issue, but that initial setup is a little time consuming. If I had any other complaints, they would be trivial things like with the bundle kit I wish they offered some sort of carry case for everything. There is a lot of stuff to tote around with batteries controllers, the drone, and the goggles.
Overall if you're looking for your first foray into FPV or just looking for something simple that you can fly inside and still have fun with it then I don’t think you can go wrong with the Avata it really is a great package overall.

Great improvement on a kitchen appliance staple
on August 12, 2022
Posted by: ViperElectric
If you’re in the market for an air fryer and you normally need to cook more than one type of food with it at the same time, well this ninja air fryer is your best bet, I think. I think it’s great that you can set the two baskets to different temperatures and times and go about whatever else you need to do without much thought. There is also the nifty feature where you can sync up both baskets so they will finish at the same time even if they have different overall times. The unit will wait to start the one that takes less time and start it when needed to make sure both sides finish at the same time. It’s a clever trick. But I think the real star of the show with this air fryer though is the temperature probe cooking that it allows you to do. First off it comes with the probe they don’t try to make it a feature that you have to spend extra to use so that’s nice. Secondly, it’s super easy to use just plug it in put the probe in the thickets part of the meat you’re cooking or whatever it is your temping out, press the probe button and chose your mode and doneness or temperature to cook to. That’s it press start and your good to go. This thing makes amazing steaks to medium rare, and for stuff like chicken I don’t have to think about checking the temp when cooking the probe is already in there while it runs. Compared to some other air fryers size this unit is not that much larger than a simple one basket one it’s a little wider than most but it does not stick out very far on the counter once you have it in place, so overall it fits in well with other countertop appliances and even stays out of the way a little more.

Good components, needs better cooling
on May 14, 2022
Posted by: ViperElectric
from Knoxville, TN
Let’s start with the good stuff. The hardware included in this computer such as the 3080 graphics card and the 12700kf processor are really good, and as long as you don’t want to overclock the processor at all (which honestly for normal use is not needed) then the motherboard is decent as well. If you're just looking for a solid gaming machine this is a good starting point. However, I say that with some caveats.
This computer at least in my testing had some minor issues with heat. The case while it looks nice does not really offer much in the way of airflow. Sure, there are openings in the front of the case to allow for air to move but the case does not come with any fans in the front to help draw fresh air in and a single exhaust fan in the back. Most modern cases have intake fans to help pull fresh air in not relying on just the CPU cooler fan and a single exhaust. This seems to be an oversight on ASUS's part. The one thing I noticed the most is how quickly this system reaches the point where it thermal throttles while doing most anything that requires any sort of processing power. And as soon as you reach those temps the lack in fans and cooling really start to show as the sound goes up. This thing is very loud when the fans are running at full speed and considering there are only two fans in the case (the exhaust and CPU fan) that’s kind of sad.
With that said if you’re willing to put a little work into the system it could be a solid base to build on later if you find it’s not what you were hoping for. My only real wish is that they would have included a better CPU cooler out of the box I think that would have gone a long way to improving the overall experience. I will say what I will probably do is take the hardware out of the ASUS case and put it in a case that is more compatible with modern cooling hardware it’s a little work and some cost to purchase some decent fans but that would take this already good hardware and turn it into a good overall system in my opinion.
If you’re looking for a simple gaming setup and you don’t mind the noise, then this system is workable. Just know going into it that you may feel the need to update some aspects later regarding cooling at least.
On a side note, the LED lighting is a nice touch but honestly to help drown out the noise I need to move the computer someplace I can’t see that lighting anyway so honestly it does not really matter at that point anyway because I can’t see it.

I'll be very honest with this one. If you plan on using this computer for anything more than simple word documents and some simple internet use look other places. I would recommend getting the Core i5 version of this computer before you get this one.

Overall design is well thought out. The device is clean and nicely wrapped in a cloth like material that gives is a little bit of room style. I would not mind having this computer sitting next to my TV or even right on my desk as it has a very welcoming look. The sound out of the single speaker on top of the device from the little bit I have used it so far seems really good for such a small setup as well.
Con's
Unfortunately this computer is very very under powered. It is nice that they include 8GB of ram but ram is not everything. This computer tends to start dragging and hiccuping any time you try to do more than one thing. I could not watch a video and surf other web pages without response times being slow and sluggish. The i3 processor is just not up to the game of driving both the monitor and the computer. The i5 version has a dedicated video card and i feel that this version would have benefited from that arrangement as well. But for cost savings i can see why they did not include that.
I honestly feel that the i3 processor in this computer just is not enough for someone who may use a computer for more than just the occasional word document or email. It chugs in a bad way when you attempt to do anything more. If all you want to do is load a single page and play music over the included speaker then I would say you are ok, but more than that and be warned it will feel really slow.

Can you connect two starter kits together?

You can connect the panels from two kits together yes, I just don't think you can have two controllers in the same setup so you would need to omit the controller panel from one set. Otherwise, the panels can all be added together.

HOW DO I HOOK UP MY EPSON PRINTER? IT WILL NOT ACCEPT MY DISC TO INSTALL!

You will need to go to Epson's website and download the drivers as this computer does not have a disk drive. The other option is to purchase a usb disk drive and use that. But i would recommend downloading the drivers from Epson
