Film making at its finest

This is an excellent film from Michael Hanake that depicts the challenges of caring for an ill loved one. I love a movie that makes you think about the characters and their morality, while giving the audience questions to answer. Is it harder to care for a someone you love, or be the helpless person who has to be cared for? Is euthanasia acceptable? What drives a person to care for an ill family member more, love or guilt? There is no definite answer to these questions. The director allows us to form answers ourselves.
It is a quite simple movie, taking place mostly inside an apartment, with two main characters we follow for the entire movie. I would definitely recommend watching this movie when you're well-rested. The two main lead actors give extraordinary performances. Retrospectively, Emmanuelle Riva was probably robbed of a deserved Best Actress Oscar for her performance in this film. This is a hard watch but it is worth it. As one movie critic said: "don't let Amour be one of those great movies you never got around to watching." I highly recommend this movie for anyone who enjoys films with excellent acting, a great screenplay, and a deep meaning to the story being presented.
P.S. Sony Pictures continues to provide the best video and audio presentation in the home video arena. This probably isn't too important to customers but I love how Sony releases Blu-Ray cases have film clip art posted on the inside side of the cover for the Blu-Ray case. It just makes me happy that I own the Blu-Ray and able to nest it in my collection. The extras are thin, but the quality of the movie completely makes up for the lack of supplemental features.
This movie is spoken in French, so you must read subtitles if you aren't fluent in French, but if you're like me and have watched Jeff Bridges in True Grit one too many times, this is manna from heaven!
What's great about it: Superb acting, heart-wrenching story, great screenplay
What's not so great: Extras quite thin
I would recommend this to a friend!
