With so many devices in use, your home network is busier than ever. This Linksys router can eliminate slowdown and interference by delivering Wi-Fi signals directly to each device, so everyone can listen to music, stream movies, and shop or game online at the same time..

Powers down for no reason...
on June 3, 2015

When it functions, it's the best router I've ever used, and I've had a bunch of them.
The installation was flawless. Others said it took only 20 minutes, as if that was impressive. This thing was up and running in less than 10 minutes. The coverage was outstanding. All of my "dead" zones were now alive. My download speed to/from external sites improved by some 10Mbps. (I don't understand that, but I'll take it.) The "linksyssmartwifi.com" site is superb, nicely done. It would appear that my dream router had finally arrived. Then...
I get up the next morning, all of my devices were on LTE. The router had simply powered down. No one had thrown the switch. It can't be powered down remotely. But it was just sitting there dead, with just the Ethernet lights flashing. The Linksys logo was dark.
Of course I blamed myself, thinking I had overloaded the UPS outlet that the router was sharing with my modem and external disk drive. Hence, I put it on it's own UPS outlet (a different one this time) and thought I was good. Then...
About 5 hours later, the router was dark once again. How can this be? Gear just don't power down on it's own unless there's a problem with the power supply and/or it's over-heating and is shutting down to protect the components. Either way, major disappointment.
I went back to Best Buy and exchanged it for a different one, exact make/model. The assumption is bad hardware.
Were it not for this issue, I would have rated this product 5 stars. I'll see how this new one performs. Perhaps I can come back later and give it at least 4 stars. And, given how well it works when its not powered down, I would recommend this to a friend.
I would recommend this to a friend!

2nd EA8500 router also powers down for no reason..
June 4, 2015
I exchanged this router for a brand new one at Best Buy. To my utter amazement, this new router also powers itself off after about 6 hours or so of superb operation.
I followed the instructions provided (in this review) by Linksys support, even though I was already on that same firmware version. I did the manual installation regardless. Here's the interesting part...
When the manual update procedure got to the point where it said the router would reboot, it went dark and never came back. So, as part of the manual firmware upgrade procedure, this problem can be reproduced. The router never comes back. After waiting some considerable time, I power-cycled it via the On/Off switch. Once again, it's back running fine. I won't know for another 6 hours or so if this attempt to upgrade the firmware to the same version, had any effect.
I also removed the router from my UPS, just in case that was causing some type of issue.
Linksys Support.... can you please recommend something else?

Same thing...
June 5, 2015
The router powered down again overnight, lasting quite a bit longer than the prior 6 hours. I spoke with a "senior" Linksys Support technician. After working with me to re-flash the firmware multiple times, reset the router back to factory defaults via the "Reset" button (30 seconds), etc., we decided to let it sit. The difference this time is that I finally got the "Firmware Update Complete" message for the first time. Prior attempts failed to produce this message because the router would not power up after the automated reboot that the firmware update procedure issues. This time the router did come back on its own.
So sometimes the auto-reboot works. Sometimes it doesn't. (The "senior" technician, who saw this first hand, acknowledges that this is a bug.) I won't know for another day or so if this repeated flashing of the same firmware ultimately resolves the issue or not.

Now on my 3rd EA8500 router...
June 5, 2015
At the suggestion of a Linksys Support "senior" engineer, I took this, my 2nd router, back to Best Buy to exchange it. I'm now on my 3rd EA8500 in 4 days. Unless this particular Best Buy store received a bad batch of routers, I'm just unlucky, having 2 routers fail the exact same way in 2 days. The technician was not able to tell me why the router was powering down. But, again, for the hours it's working, it works great. It just has to stay powered up. Simple...

Power down issue MAY be resolved...
June 7, 2015
Through extensive testing (trial and error) I've narrowed the cause down to what is connected to the USB and Ethernet ports on the back. When I disconnect everything that's physically connected to the router, it does not power down.
At present I suspect the culprit to be a long (around 50ft) Ethernet cable run to my son's Xbox game system in the basement. When I connected just that up, the router powered down in less than an hour.
I would suggest that you try disconnecting things from the rear of the router, especially if you have any long Ethernet cable runs and see if that keeps the router from powering down. Linksys does have a problem here. They need to fix this.

Great Wi-Fi Router for a busy Home Network
By Mmares from Surprise, AZ
I replaced my AE6350 and what a difference in speed and connectivity. I had it set up and up and running in 15-20 minutes without issues. I don't know why certain people conplain so much about setting up the router but it is easy. I set up my bands, 2.4 and 5G as tow separate bands and everyting is working great. We have devices in our house that use old and new technology and this router hadles both technologies as described. This new technology, MU-MIMO work great. I live a tow story home, I have my rought in the first floor and we get a great, very fast speeds upstairs and everywhere in the house. So far this router is working as advertised and I am very happy with its performance.

Linksys engineering is looking into this issue...
June 12, 2015
On "community.linksys.com" there an active thread on this issue. The prevailing opinion now is that the latest firmware update broke IPv6. Those of us following this thread have disabled IPv6 to see if the router will power down. We'll know the results in a couple of days.
