Solid Wi-Fi System
on January 17, 2017
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
I have tested a dozen or more routers in the last couple years. Only recently have I tried the new breed of mesh wi-if systems. My first experience was with a Netgear Orbi system consisting of a base and one expansion module. In my 4000sq ft, two-story home it did a very good job of providing strong, seamless wireless.
While I have been happy I decided to give the Linksys Velop system a shot. The model I am using is the three module kit. In reality this is probably too much for my home, but it is what was available. I noticed two things right from the start. First, the power brick is shaped like a square. A very wide square. Why Linksys would think this was an ideal configuration beats me, but it is a pain to use with a loaded surge strip or UPS as it covers other outlets or just plain doesn't fit. Second thing I noticed was the inclusion of only two Ethernet ports. For most this might not be an issue, but for me it is. I place the first module in my office where I also have a NAS and small media server, as well as, my desktop computer. All of which require Ethernet. This immediately necessitated the adding of a switch to what could have been a very compact, elegant setup. Had Linksys opted for four Ethernet ports instead of two it would have streamlined my installation.
That all being said, the overall setup of each module throughout my home was pretty painless. They do require either a smartphone or tablet to complete the process, but most likely anyone looking at this system has one or both on hand. After setup was complete I walked around my house running the Speedtest app on my iPad Pro. I have gigabit internet which is fabulous, but I have yet to find a wi-if system to truly deliver anywhere near that speed and the Velop system is no different. Speeds were on-par with what I saw with the Orbi system. I get on average 250mb/s up and down. Not going to knock your socks off, but for most people it is more than enough and certainly capable of delivering multiple 4K video streams around the house. I have not had any stability issues whatsoever in the four days I have been using it which is a good sign that the firmware is fairly mature at launch.
The only other minor annoyance I feel I should warn people about is the small light on top of each module. It is on all the time and not defeatable as far as I can tell. So be mindful of where you place each module as I have one in my bedroom and it is fairly annoying at night. That small blue light has enough output to light up my entire room. Problem has been solved with electrical tape, but Linksys really should offer some control over the lights to avoid having to resort to tape.
As a whole, the system is solid. Overall performance is top tier with 20+ devices on the network and it has been 100% stable. The price is in line with the other high end mesh wireless systems so that isn't an issue. The inclusion of only two Ethernet ports is a negative for me, but may not be for others. The power brick and lights are more of an annoyance than a deal breaker, but hopefully Linksys will sort out the lack of light control.

Great Flexibility
on December 26, 2016
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
The Ninja Nutri Bowl Duo is a well-made, thought out blender. The 1200W motor easily exceeds my Breville blender even if it may not necessarily directly outperform it. It can destroy ice and create great fruit smoothies or cocktails (if you should so choose). The multiple size bowls make whipping out single serve to family size drinks easy and even easier to clean. While I haven't tried the food processing aspects beyond smoothie/cocktail creation, the machine has ample power and a large enough mixing bowl to make moderate size creations. The blender comes with a cookbook with 75 recipes to get your creative thoughts going. It's dual purpose potentially replaces both my Breville blender and food-processor and Ninja does it for a lot less money.

Jack of all shaving trades. Master of none.
on November 15, 2016
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
This multi-groom trimmer attempts to replace every shaver in your drawer. I wish it could have accomplished that feat, but instead replaced none of them. If you don't have a trimmer or shaver already then this will probably fit the bill for far less than the individual items. The device is lightweight and waterproof. It has a short charge time and lasts for around an hour before needing to be topped off again. Also comes with an over-sized, leatherette case to hold the trimmer and all the various tools. The case is a tad too large in my opinion, but is very flexible so it can jam into a suitcase nicely. The real problem is that it doesn't shave as close as my Panasonic Arc4 and the beard trimmer is just awkward to use. It requires a very precise grip to insure that it cuts to the length it is set at. If you roll it too far forward it will shorten up the cutting length leading to a shorter trim than you intended. The detail trimmer tool works fine and so does the neck trimmer. The fact is that the two items I would use it for on a regular basis (beard trim and shave) it doesn't do a better job than what I already have. It's a tough business proposition for me, but my wife loves using it in the shower for her legs so I supposed that is a win after all. This multi-trimmer is really no different than others when it comes to trying too much and not being excellent at much of any.

Potential
on November 4, 2016
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
This has been one of the most frustrating computers I have had to review. It has tons of potential, but is hamstrung by Acer's short-sightedness. The Acer Aspire R15 is a decent notebook with the latest bells and whistles with one very huge caveat, the hard drive.
The Acer ticks off all the relevant modern notebook boxes. It has a decent 15.6" IPS multi-touch screen with good viewing angles and average color reproduction with middling contrast. It is probably average in this price class. The touch responsiveness is excellent and I did not notice any lag. The only negative I saw was a considerable amount of backlight bleed on all four sides. While this is becoming common even among high-end brands it is a tad disappointing nonetheless. The plus side is that it is only really distracting on black or very dark screens.
The Acer has 12GB RAM coupled to a Kaby Lake ULV i7 processor. The i7-7500U is the top of the line in the Intel Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) family and it is a super quick and responsive dual-core processor. Works great for light to medium tasks, but probably wouldn't recommend heavy tasks such as video editing on it.
The keyboard is pretty average and a tad mushy for me, but certainly acceptable for long use. The trackpad works fine, but seems to lag a bit behind the cursor on the screen.
The Acer has Nvidia Optimus technology meaning it can switch to the discrete GPU (a 940MX) for more demanding tasks. Don't expect to play any AAA games at Ultra settings with it, but it will certainly get you by at Low setting at a reduced resolution. It's a "nice to have", but just barely.
Wi-Fi performance is top-notch. I was able to maintain 500+ mbps up/down on a gigabit internet connection. The speakers are only slightly above average, but still have a pretty muffled sound at loud volumes. Didn't detect any distortion with the volume at max so that is a plus.
Now to the elephant in the room. It's 2016 and Acer has decided that a spinning hard drive is acceptable on a notebook of this class. Sorry, it's not. Not at all. The notebook simply does not perform like it should given all of the other specs thanks to a very slow conventional storage drive. It took 3+ hours to install updates to the machine on initial power-up. Yep, 3+ hours. I couldn't believe it myself. It's not 2008 anymore and solid-state drives should be standard at this price. You will certainly lose some capacity to keep it at its price point, but the speed difference would change the overall user experience so dramatically that it blows my mind that Acer engineers thought this was the better direction.
Battery life is just acceptable. Acer rates this machine at 9 hours and that is optimistic to say the least. I saw 4 hours on average with 50% brightness and light computing such as video streaming and web browsing. Not exactly class leading and certainly wouldn't get you through an average work day.
As a whole, the machine is decent. Reasonable weight and size coupled with the latest Intel processor. The hard drive is a deal breaker for me. I will have to investigate what the upgrade paths looks like. Otherwise, this Aspire will be short lived in my house.

Surprising Performance
on November 2, 2016
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
I substituted the WRT AC3200 for a Netgear Orbi system which had replaced a Linksys AC5300 before that. I am in a 4000+ sq ft. home with a full size basement and the AC5300 struggled to provide a decent 5GHz signal in the basement from the opposite side of the house on the main floor. So I switched to the Netgear Orbi system which provided a main base and satellite which I could use in the basement for better coverage. It's worked pretty well, but I thought I would give the AC3200 a chance since it offered additional features such as an OpenVPN server. Much to my surprise the AC3200 has given me a consistent and strong signal to the basement that the AC5300 could not. In fact, it is as good as the Orbi system without needing a satellite/repeater. Consider me impressed.
I have not experienced any lockups or abnormal behavior from the unit over the course of the last week. I have found that with more than 20 or so devices connected to the 5GHz band it does start to struggle with ping times. I have had my iPad timeout in Safari when trying to load a page if several other devices around the house are streaming video. This does give me reason to pause about the robustness of the unit, but I am hopeful some of that can be ironed out with new firmware.
I am on Gigabit internet and while I can obviously achieve those speeds when wired in, I can't come even close via wireless. The best I have seen is using a 3x3 802.11AC system in which I achieved 540mbps via SpeedTest. On wired I consistently receive 900+ mbps up and down. So, your mileage may vary and for the vast majority of people this should be more than enough bandwidth as so few have Gigabit internet access.
Overall, this is a very solid router and is considerably more compact than the AC5300. It represents a solid value especially when compared to the two "higher" end units I referenced above. The only caveat I have found is that it stresses when too many devices are on the 5GHz channel. This might be a deal breaker for some, but in a smaller household would be a non-issue.

A True iPhone Competitor
on October 22, 2016
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
Full disclosure: I am both an Android and iOS user. I have owned the iPhone 3G, 4, 5, 6 Plus, and 6S Plus. On the Android side I have owned a Nexus 4, Galaxy S6, and Nexus 5. My current day-to-day phone has been an 6S Plus for the last year.
The Pixel XL represents the first phone to carry the Google name. For all intents and purposes this is Google's direct, formal competition against the Apple empire. Let me just say they have a very strong contender on their hands to threaten Apple's dominance.
Pros:
- Outstanding OLED Screen (Vibrant and bright with razor sharp resolution)
- Great feel in the hand. Well constructed and feels like a premium product.
- Fingerprint sensor is fast and very reliable.
- Outstanding camera for both stills and video. The image stabilization feature is very solid.
- Call quality is pretty standard, but so far no dropped calls on Verizon
- Battery life is great. All day battery llife with some to spare. Meets or exceeds my iPhone 6S Plus.
- Headphone jack. Sad to say, but this is a plus now.
- Speakers are loud and clear
- Android 7.1 is great. Streamlined and fit-for-purpose exactly the way Google intended. Very similar to the Nexus line.
Cons
- Fingerprint sensor location is just plain bad. It is ergonomically challenged. I cannot find a reliable way to pick it up that feels natural and places my finger on the sensor to unlock the phone.
- Verizon model has preloaded apps (fortunately they can be removed)
- Verizon model has locked bootloader (no rooting or changing carriers in the future).
Overall, this is a pretty spectacular phone where my biggest gripe is the fingerprint sensor location. I would absolutely recommend anyone interested in the real Android experience to give it a look. I am switching from my 6S Plus to it full-time. That might not seem like a big deal to many, but I have the complete Apple ecosystem in my home and an Apple Watch too so making the switch is a very big deal indeed. That's how much I like the Pixel XL. Well done Google! Maybe next time fix the fingerprint sensor location...

Solid Vacuum for Multiple Floor Types
on October 20, 2016
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
This will mark my first vacuum cleaner review so bear with me. The Bissell is easy to setup and use. Comes out of the box in three pieces which quickly snap together and the overall construction feels very solid once assembled. Drop the battery in and then charge. Took about two hours to charge the supplied battery to 100%. The vacuum has a battery indicator on top of the battery that easily identifies condition. I got 40+ minutes from a single charge across hard floors and light carpet. The vacuum handle adjusts up and down, but only in two positions. It also has a pivoting head which makes turning the vacuum super easy. The unit is relatively lightweight in comparison to large uprights. Power is great and easily sucks up everything in its path. In a house with multiple cats and dogs it does a great job with pet hair and even the occasional Lego. The canister is a tad small as I did find it needed to be dumped more frequently than I cared for, but it is super easy to remove and has a mechanism for clearing the chamber. I do wish it was a tad bit more multifunctional and offered attachments of some kind, but it serves its single purpose very well. Overall, this is a solid, lightweight, medium-use vacuum cleaner.

Does the job...
on October 7, 2016
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
The Acer Switch One 10 is a fairly solid, entry-level, Windows based tablet. It is a rare breed in that it comes with an attachable keyboard. First, the tablet. It has a decent IPS screen with average color reproduction. My biggest gripe is the somewhat low resolution, but it gets the job done and helps with battery life. The overall performance is fairly snappy with basic activities such as web browsing or light productivity tasks. It can quickly bog down and part of this is due to the very slow SSD it is equipped with. Speaking of SSD, the drive after completing the update to the Win10 Anniversary edition had 16gb left. At least the tablet is equipped with MicroSD. The tablet is well built, but heavy. Almost too heavy considering its small form factor. The keyboard is useable, but flimsy. Mine doesn't sit flat on a table and has a slight twist which causes it to rock lightly. The tablet/keyboard combo has a tendency to fall backwards as it is very top heavy when installed. Key travel is acceptable. When closed the unit is about an inch thick, but still very compact. Battery life is a big plus. I have been getting 8-10 hours out of mine with heavy web browsing and multitasking. Charge time is, unfortunately, very slow. Overall, the tablet is a great value for its price. It's not a Surface Pro 4, but it wasn't meant to be. I don't know of another Win10 tablet remotely in this price range that can compete.

Good, but Gimmicky
on October 1, 2016
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
The Bose SoundSport Wireless Pulse easily exceeded my expectation in the sound quality department. It bested my Beats PowerBeats 2 and my wired B&W C5. It has a full, balanced sound with excellent bass reproduction and wide soundstage. Frankly, I really didn't expect much as I am not a Bose guy, but these SoundSport Wireless are really quite good. They are a bit bulky in your ear, but overall comfortable and lightweight. Battery life seems reasonable for this style of headphone and I managed to get a solid 6 hours out of them. Construction seems solid and charging is done with a USB micro cable. The only real negative I have is that the pulse rate monitoring is pretty gimmicky. It would frequently have trouble reading my pulse and I would have to reposition the buds, but when it worked it was often pretty accurate. The Bose Connect app is OK I suppose. Pretty no-frills app that offers software updating, pulse monitoring, and a very basic music player. Overall, the Bose SoundSport Wireless Pulse exceed my expectation for sound quality, are comfortable to wear, and have a decent battery life. Just not sure the extra money for Pulse monitoring is really worth it.

So Far, So Good
on September 22, 2016
Posted by: Balthazar2k4
I have been using the Netgear Orbi for just under a week. I was previously using a Linksys EA9500 in my two story home. I have the Orbi router in an upstairs corner where the cable modem is situated and the the satellite in the basement along the wall in the center of the house. While on the main floor I see little to no improvement with WI-Fi (it has been very good with the Linksys), the basement is much improved. At the far opposite end of the basement from the router I was barely getting a reliable signal before, but with the Orbi I get a much stronger and more reliable connection. My throughput in the basement generally ran 40-60mbps, but with the Orbi I get upwards of 200mbps. The only real negative I have at this point with the Orbi system is that it does occasionally seem to lose connection for about 30 seconds, but then resumes operation. This has happened twice so far, but I suspect issues like that will iron themselves out with new firmware. At this point I will say the experience has been overall very positive one.

They do not offer active noise cancellation. They do however provide pretty decent passive noise cancellation if you can get them snug in your ears.

Glossy with an anti-glare finish. Does a reasonable job with reflections, but is no match for a matte screen.

No. The AQ10 dry box is pretty small. Maybe an iPhone 4 or possibly a 5.

I have a Comcast modem going to a apple time capsule for wifi. Can this be installed after that and still give me access to time capsule and increase speeds?

Yes, the Orbi router can be placed into Access Point mode and used to extend your existing network.

How much are the Satlelites and are/when they available? My home is 4200 square feet. W/2000 square feet of finished basementnd I need all 3 floors covered. I know 2 cant cover 6200sqft. But one on each floor might. Also can each work being cat6 wired in

Three units (including the router itself) should have you covered assuming you can place them roughly center on each floor. Unfortunately, the satellites cannot be wired in at this time, but I do believe Netgear is looking at the situation. I am using the router and a single satellite in a ~4000sq ft home with a finished basement and it works great even with the satellite being connected wirelessly. Keep in mind the Orbi system uses a dedicated 5ghz channel as a backhaul so it does not work like a conventional router/extender combo.
