Finally saw this, was a disappointment
on April 24, 2013

Finally got around to seeing this movie. Can't say I was very impressed. Easily the best parts of the movie are when Steve Martin is in a scene, or Bill Murray's cameo. Rick Moranis is fine, doing what Rick Moranis does (but not what James Cameron does do), but I couldn't stand stand Ellen Greene. First off, I thought for the first few minutes of the movie that she was a drag queen (she has a giraffe neck, with a crazy collarbone), and secondly, her voice (at least for this movie) are nails-on-a-chalkboard irritating. It doesn't help that her character (and Moranis' for that matter) is nothing more than a boring stereotype. As I already said, I loved every minute of Steve Martin's sadistic dentist, that and Bill Murray's masochistic character easily steals the show. Decent puppet effects, a couple of kind of catchy songs, and a kind of crazy energy are the other things I liked.

Spielberg hits another home run
on April 24, 2013

Well, Spielberg has definitely made up for War Horse here. An actors' movie for sure; Day-Lewis deserves yet another Oscar (even if he doesn't receive one - he has so many), for he again disappears into his role as Lincoln. And the quality character actors in this movie is endless, even figures with a few lines are cast with great character actors; I'm surprised Spielberg didn't win out. Tommy Lee Jones and David Strathairn are the major standouts, as they are given the most to do. Although I said it's an actors movie, the script is top notch and Spielberg's direction is pretty good (especially like that shot of Lincoln and his son at the window near the end). There may be a scene or two too many where the movie stops to sermonize "Spielberg-ian" style, but truthfully it's forgivable because Day-Lewis is electric as Lincoln.

Bond is Back!

That was amazing! The Bond geek inside me is shouting with joy, just a great Bond movie. Really shows what can be done with a good script and talented director for the franchise. Even better than Casino Royale, and possibly the best Bond movie of them all, would have to rewatch the early Connery films to be sure. Such a great old fashioned Bond action movie while still being fresh and culturally up-to-date. Deserves a best picture nomination (at least with the larger format).

McConaughey returns to form, finally
on April 24, 2013

It's nice to see Matthew McConaughey try "acting" again after about a 16 year absence. Easily his most electric role since a long time ago in a movie far, far away called A Time to Kill, and he's better and more mature in this as an actor. I was also impressed with Thomas Haden Church; it's hard to play such a passive (and stupid) character right. I'm a big Joe R. Lansdale fan, and I know this wasn't written by him, but it feels like one of his novels coming to life. It's a compliment to the film that it is able to keep the audience engaged for so long with such unlikable characters; not one person in the movie is likable (even Juno Temple as Dottie who's the most innocent is still just kinda weird; maybe a little slow or something, she certainly doesn't seem "all there.").
What's great about it: McConaughey and Thomas Hayden Church
What's not so great: no likeable characters at all, doesn't keep me from enjoying the movie

A pretty satisfying return to Middle Earth
on April 24, 2013

The Hobbit was pretty good, but it doesn't look like it will approach the original trilogy, just as I thought (and was hoping against). The source material just isn't up to the task, but nor should it have to be solely judged on it. On its own, it is a great return to Middle-Earth; I can say I enjoyed every minute of it, practically. Did I enjoy it as much as, say, Fellowship of the Ring? No. The main reason is because the stakes just aren't the same. The movie plays like a sort of a side adventure to LOTR; sort of a compendium of Middle-Earth. The Hobbit is shaping up to be a nice tale that Tolkien created and Peter Jackson has interpreted, and as an opening up of Jackson's take on Middle-Earth. On it's own, The Hobbit is a pretty good movie, especially for the fantasy genre, and I think, like LOTR, once the new "trilogy" is done, it will stand even better on it's own when it's complete. That being said, there are a few issues with the movie. If I wasn't a hardcore Tolkien fan, this movie may not be for you. It IS too long. I enjoyed even the parts that went on too long, but I can see that the film itself is just too much. It's as if Jackson just made the theatrical cut like the extended DVD editions of LOTR (and that's with extended editions supposedly coming out for each chapter of The Hobbit). Truthfully, I liked pretty much everything in the theatrical cut for The Hobbit, but judged as a film, it's just too long. Maybe that has to do with Jackson trying to justify making The Hobbit into three films, maybe Jackson has just sort of lost a little perspective, because, despite having running times of all 3+ hours, the original trilogy felt briskly paced. Maybe that had more to do with the type of films; the fellowship was always on the move in some way. I must admit I sort of enjoyed the slower pace of The Hobbit, it allowed for some interesting instances of fleshing out the characters. And also more humor; one thing the Hobbit handled very well was the use of humor; in the LOTR I felt there were at least a few added "cringe-inducing" scenes that were attempts at humor that I felt just fell flat, but in The Hobbit I thought all of the humor worked well with the story, and I didn't cringe once. When the extended edition is released on Bluray, I'd like to both see a longer cut of the movie AND a shorter cut as well. I feel the theatrical version could have used some tightening up and made the movie better objectively, while the Tolkien fan in me would still want to see the scenes cut from the theatrical version put into the extended edition. Well, I can breathe a sigh of relief, The Hobbit is no Phantom Menace. Nor is it as I've said on par with the original trilogy. But it is a nice extension to that trilogy, as well as an expansion of Middle-Earth. I look forward to the next two installments, and imagine the completed film will be nearly up to the quality of the LOTR trilogy, and that is no small accomplishment.

What's great about it: cinematography, acting, seeing the world of Middle Earth again
What's not so great: too long, comedy might not work for some.

Not worth remaking
on April 24, 2013

No interesting characters to speak of. Needed (more) humor. Colin Farrell is solid but shows little personality or charisma; not sure if it was his acting or weak writing for the character (my guess is both). Beckinsale is adequate, I suppose, but is just going through the motions of a female action villain; Biel, like usual, just takes up space. Bryan Cranston really tries to elevate his character, but fails due to a weak script with weak story and characterizations.

A different kind of chase movie
on April 24, 2013

Great small action film, accomplishes what it set out to do; nothing more, nothing less. JGL gives a strong physical performance, and of course can handle that is required for him in the movie. Michael Shannon is as always fascinating to watch, even here in a oft-used character type of the dirty cop. Guess I can call this this the best bike movie of all time.
My Best Buy number: 569489575
What's great about it: good bike racing, Michael Shannon, JGL
What's not so great: doesn't have the greatest plot logic
