Great lens but slow

I purchased this lens for my 7D Mark II in the summer of 2015 to photograph birds. The lens really brings the birds close, and there is no distortion at the corners even when shooting at 600 mm. My only gripe is that at f-5, it is awfully slow. While the advertisement claims that it shoots well in shade, that is not quite true. Unless you are shooting a still object at a slow speed, your picture will be slightly blurry. Unfortunately, birds do not tend to be still. I try to fix some of the blur on the computer, but I have limited success. Overall, I do like the lens, however, and, since I cannot afford the $11,000 lens my friend bought, this $1,650 one will have to do--for now.

I would recommend this to a friend!

Great camera for stills and long distance.

Still learning this camera, Love the long zoom capability. But have not been able to get consistent focus on moving objects that are close. Manual is only on-line and not easy to find the best way to take certain pictures. i.e. close ups. fast action multiple shots with one click etc.
For the cost it is worth keeping just for those long shots.
One last thing is the mode select on the top. IT can be bummed and moved to another setting without realizing it. So now I check between shots to make sure it is on the desired one.

OK for the price

I have had the camera for about a week and have shot about 200 pictures so far. I have been using a Sony DSC HX100V with a 30X zoom and wanted to increase my zoom capability, but having the other features remain pretty much the same. Well, the H400 certainly does increase my zoom capability, but that is about all. My take is as follows:
Pros:
1. 63X zoom is incredible--speaks for itself.
2. The fantastic 20.1 MP is better for making enlargements than the not-too-shabby 14.5 on the old one.
3. The lens cap does not constantly fall off like it does on my HX100V. That saves my lens considerably.
4. There is a 55mm screw mount access on the lens, allowing me to attach a UV filter--used mainly to save the main lens from scratches. Also, I can attach other filters and lenses for very interesting shots.
Cons:
1. The auto focus takes forever long, and sometimes it is impossible to get it to focus on what I want to photograph. The birds have laid eggs by the time the focus fixes for photographing their mating rituals.
2. The HX 100V switches from screen viewing to viewfinder viewing automatically when I remove my eye from the eyepiece, while the H400 does not. I have to operate a button, adding wasted time when I want to see how the photo turned out and see if I need another shot.
3. The view screen on the H400 is fixed, while the one on the HX 100V folds out--allowing for ground shots or holding the camera up for air shots. This is really unfortunate.
I do not understand why Sony (and all the other companies) don't make a camera with all of the good features. And don't tell me that it would cost too much to make such a camera. While the camera has numerous drawbacks, I think I will keep it--for the price--but I will not get rid of my HX 100V as I had hoped I could.
