Why did this movie story have to be made up? First the so called U-571 was never involved in what the movie shows. Second after the sub is damaged by depth charges it should have been dead in the water but somehow it gets started up again after being taken over some of the crew of the U.S. sub. It comes in contact with a German ship and gets depth charged a second time but again and with more damaged the U.S. crew gets it started up again. After outwitting the German ship by destroying the ships radio room with one shot from it's deck gun it is able to get under that ship and after is passes out from under the other side of it uses it's last rear fired torpedo to sink it.
An original story with very well done special visuals and sound. The music fit the scenes well and was very powerful in some. Jennifer Connelly is very beautiful and believable in her role. A better than average sci-fi movie.
It was suppose to be an action adventure movie but it turned out to be a sci-fi one instead. With stars Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie I was expecting a believable story line but you get a stupid one instead. I should have known that they were not proud of this movie because no one's name appears on the front of the package, a usual sign that they would rather forget that they ever appeared in it.
A total waste of time. One of the most negative story lines I have even seen. No redeeming value in this story. I can't imagine anyone liking this movie.
The copy I purchased from Best Buy had no start menu. I contacted Universal and they sent me a replacement but that one also had no start menu. Universal then let me pick another one of their movies for them to send me and then I returned both copies of American Gangster to them. They claimed that my Blu-Ray disc player that was the top of the Sony line in 2012 was at fault. Every other Blu-Ray disc that I own starts and play fine including all of the Universal ones.
I expected a great movie from the actors and was not dsappointed. As a BlueRay disk the details were awesome.

I purchased this Blu-Ray movie and the disc does not have a start menu. Universal sent me another copy but that one also does not have a start menu. A rep from Universal said that the fault was with my disc player. My disc player is a Sony model #S-790 from 2012 and maybe the hardware in it is several years old. I have played 290 Blu-Ray discs and many are Universal Picture disc and this is the only one to have this problem.
This movie was so bad that I could barely watch it all the way through. Bette Midler is one of my favorites and she was the only part of the movie that kept me watching, but still not nearly a great performance. Helen Hunt looked absolutely awful in this movie...really really bad. I wouldn't even be able to stand watching the preview for this one again.

Ejoyed This Movie

I first watched this movie alone and liked it enough that I watched it again and had my wife watch it with me. I rarely do this. She liked it too. Then I lent it to a friend and her husband and they both liked this movie as well. Maybe since we all had come from Brooklyn, NY where the movie takes place is why we enjoyed it. Helen Hunt is a fine actor as is Bette Midler and so are the other actors in this movie. It's just a believable story.

I recently purchased another Blu-ray copy of this movie and once again it would not play in my Blu-ray disc player. I own over 600 Blu-ray movie discs including many Universal Blu-ray movie discs. The player I own is a Sony model S-790 manufactured in 2012. It is their top of the line consumer model that year so why is American Gangster Universal Studio's disc the ONLY disc that does not play in this player?
