Snow is coming. After going through an endless barrage of snowstorms last year I wanted a way to get in and out of my apartment without having to constantly fumble around for keys – whilst holding a shovel and wearing gloves. A few friends purchased Kevo last year and rave about it so I decided to join the club. Have to admit I was somewhat concerned with installing and converting my existing lock into a “smart” lock. Much to my relief when unboxing to find there wasn’t a mess of small parts I would have to put together and try to figure out. Packaging and parts were labelled clearly so no guess work there. Illustrations in the instruction guide were easy to understand and made for a straight forward installation. It’s designed as an ordinary deadbolt lock which makes it so there aren’t any additional changes required to existing lock and/or door. After bolting lock to door, which was easily done with just a screwdriver, with four included screws I just had to connect two wires with electronic panel. I was told by friend who previously installed Kevo to be careful with these two wires as they are rather sensitive and could detach easily – which almost happened to him. Four AA batteries were included, a nice small touch as it helps save a trip to drug store, and these were put into labelled slot. One step programming by pressing button which is clearly written on the panel. I was also able to re-key my old Kwikset lock keys by using Smart Key which was provided in the box. Had been using keyfob up until Kevo launched Android app for Lollipop users. Using it with my Nexus 6 seamlessly. I noticed phone must be unlocked to use with Kevo though I haven’t yet tried to add Kevo as Trusted Device. I do wish it was a little bit quicker in locking and unlocking. Android compatibility is a plus but limited to Lollipop. Used to carry flashlight on keychain to see keyhole for opening door – no longer necessary.
