In what is by far the greatest series of Doctor Who produced to date, Donna Noble and the Doctor are joined by former companions Captain Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, and Rose Tyler to stop the greatest enemy the universe has ever known. Also appearing this series are the 5th Doctor, Mickey, Jackie, Gwen, Ianto, Luke, Mr. Smith, K-9, Agatha Christie, the Ood, the Daleks, and the Doctor's daughter Jenny.
What's great about it: The return of all companions since 2005
The Doctor's companion Sarah Jane Smith continues her adventures as the ever inquisitve investigative journalist. Together with her 14 year old son, Luke and his friends Maria and Clyde, they defend the Earth from every form of alien threat. Unlike it's sister show, Torchwood, this series never really stepped out from Doctor Who's shadow, though it did return to the classic format of half hour episodes ending in cliff hangers. In this season, Sarah Jane battles a soft drink company bent on world conquest, encounters the surviving Slitheen family who have unfinished business on Earth, and discovers what would happen if she never travelled with the Doctor
Excellent series, even better than the first. Jack is less brooding, Gwen is more butt-kicking, Ianto gets all the best lines, Martha joins the fight, Owen struggles with his zombification, and Tosh gets the boys in the end. Episodes include a lot of sci-fi gore, Jack/Ianto action, and the best Welsh drama available on the BBC.
What's great about it: Gwen's wedding, Ianto's one-liners, the undeath of Owen
What's not so great: The brain parasite and Journey's End for two characters
Series 2 is bigger and better as the 5 Torchwood team members plus Martha Jones fight to save Wales from the horrors of the Cardiff Rift. Jack is less brooding, Gwen kicks more butt, Owen becomes undead, Ianto gets all the best lines, and Martha joins the team to save the day. The series leads up to an explosive reunion between Jack, his former partner John, and his brother Grey which leaves the city in chaos and changes the Torchwood team forever.
What's great about it: The Space Whale, Gwen's wedding, and Ianto
What's not so great: Journey's End for 2 Characters
All the Strange, Strange Creatures is the best theme music used throughout Series 3. Futurekind, the Master's Vainglorious, and This is Gallifrey take a life of their own
Dark, gritty, and violent, Torchwood is the perfect companion series to Doctor Who. Stuck in 21st century Wales, Cpt. Jack Harkness and team scavenge alien technology to prepare the human race for the future. Unfortunately, the series raises more questions about Jack and the Time War than it answers and the plots are not the most original (Combat is Fight Club with Weevils), but it does provide a perfect set up for Series 3. Not for the squeamish or faint of heart, but definitely a must see for any Whovian.
