Great value & features for the money

Cover me deeply impressed with the XBR-55X850D, which I operate with the HT-CT790 soundbar (if you care about good sound you need to go with an external subwoofer of a soundbar w/ subwoofer). 720p/1080i/1080p as well as 4K looks stunning even with factory settings (I didn't feel the need for color calibration at all). Overall nice (but not perfect) black levels (but for that price really nice). Also love the seamless Netflix integration as well as the many other Apps utilizing the Android OS. TV Program Guide via wireless access (for over-the-air programming) works well too. Definitely highly recommend this TV.

Works very well with Sony XBR-55X850D

I had the Sony HT-CT390 soundbar before which I needed to return due to a white noise problem, but am I glad I upgraded to the Sony HT-CT790. What a difference! This soundbar makes watching my XBR-55X850D even more exciting. Though you can only make adjustments to the subwoofer level (and maxed that one out with level 12) the overall sound is really nice. I also extremely appreciate Sony they added an DLNA media player which even can playback HiRes (up to 192 kHz / 24-bit) music files, wow! Am considering adding 2 surround speakers ... but the 2.1 soundbar emulates 5.1 sound quite nicely already. Highly recommended, yes!

Leave this one alone if you can do Roku 3

Setup was very easy. You plug it in, it guides you through connecting to your wireless LAN, you're then asked to link the streaming stick to your Roku account, after which it downloads the latest software, and installs it. So far so good. But, neither Roku nor Netflix could ever solve the 25% load freeze problem. In order to watch Netflix you always needed to restart your streaming stick.
Also troublesome: It is very slow compared to Roku 3. Very, very slow. I ended up returning it and exchanging it for a Roku 3, which I connected via LAN --> no problems whatsoever, and awesome performance.
Can't give more than 3 stars, whereas the Roku 3 would get 5 stars no questions asked.
Recommendation: If you can go with a Roku 3 (and can spend more money) go for the Roku 3. Huge difference.

Awesome sound with plenty of power

I replaced a set of Altec Lansing speakers with this set, and boy was I blown away by the sound of this 2.1 systen, wow! - I totally enjoy listening to my MP3s where the speakers splendidly show the difference between 128 kBit/sec and 320 kBit/sec sampled MP3s. Also enjoy watching movies via NetFlix with these speakers.
Only thing I found disturbing that these speakers do not come with a On/Off switch, and that the green power lights stays on always. I am not sure if the speakers actually go into standby when not in use for a certain number of minutes. The manual does not mention anything.
Hoping the speakers are not drawing power when in use I can absolutely and very highly recommend this 2.1 set. You won't be disappointed!

when i hit display it shows 720hd, shouldn't be 1080

Depends on the source. TV stations broadcast HD programming in 720p or 1080i. Media streamers, such as Roku 3, transmit in 1080p. The TV plays back what you feed him. But this TV upscales apparently by default to 4K. Hope this helps.

Old TV with new Blu Ray

Can you hook up a Blu Ray player to an old TV? Will a new Surround Sound work on an old TV?
I guess the answer (you won't like) is: It depends. What input signal does your TV support? - HDMI has been out for around 10 years, but if your TV is older than that you may want to choose a Bluray player that comes with additional output options, such as regular RCA (Composite video plus stereo audio). Worst case is that you would need a video down-converter that would, for example, downgrade an HDMI signal to Coax/Antenna quality (480i). Do know, though, that only HDMI provides HD and 4K quality video. Anything else downgrades to 480i. Does this all makes sense to you? - Now with respect to the soundbar, as long as your old TV has an optical out (Toslink) or RCA Stereo out, this soundbar should work fine. You would need to manually turn on/off the soundbar with the remote, though (i.e., the soundbar does not automatically turn on/off with the TV). If you go RCA stereo, you would need to get a 3.5mm-to-RCA Stereo adapter to make it work with the soundbar.

Does the subwoofer power down when not in use? There is a power button behind where the link button is

The subwoofer turns on and off with the soundbar, i.e., it does not turn off by itself should the bass level be too low (as some subwoofer tend to do), which is great.

Does this model soundbar have a tuner meaning i can adjust the bass the tone ect

You mean equalizer for tone adjustments, right? - There are no treble/mid/bass settings that allow for individual preferences except the level of the subwoofer (from level 1 to 12, where I personally like level 12 the best). That said, there are various factory-provided (surround) sound settings you can choose from, which impact treble/mid/bass.
