Another solid action flick from South Korea!

Wow! This was a fun movie!
I am a huge fan of the recent cinema pouring out of South Korea, and they seem to always be adding to their ever-growing catalog of entertaining movies... "Veteran" is no exception!
"Veteran" re-teams actor Hwang Jung-min and director Ryoo Seung-wan, who previously worked together on the highly successful 2010 film "The Unjust". Unlike their previous and more serious film, the duo opts to go for a funner tone on this venture. While it by no means shies away from some fairly brutal violence, it does have a nice level of comedic moments sprinkled in as well, making it a much lighter movie. The contrast between the righteous hero and a VERY despicable villain helps the movie gain its momentum in strides. Lets just say, you REALLY want to see the bad-guy get his just-deserve by the end of this ride. So, if you are a fan of action flicks and cop-dramas alike(especially from Asia), this one should certainly satisfy.
It is featured in its Korean language with English subtitles, and also has an English dubbed audio track as well for those who prefer not to have to read the dialogue. I can't comment on the quality of the dubbing though, as I wholeheartedly prefer to watch movies in their original languages.
All in all, I personally recommend "Veteran", especially to fans of the genre.

VAN DAMMAGE!

The main reason I'm posting this review is not only to give an opinion, but to clear-up a pretty big flaw in the information on this product here... It states that it includes "Knock Off", which it does NOT. It includes "Double Team" instead(at least my copy did)... which isn't too bad, considering "Double Team" is actually a better movie, in my opinion.
Now, with that out of the way... how are the movies quality-wise?
Well, it's certainly a mixed bag.
Video Quality -
"Hard Corps" is definitely the worst of the bunch, and looks EXACTLY like it's standard-definition DVD predecessor. Mill Creek has literally taken the SD version and just transferred it over to a Blu-ray disc with their previously released HD copy of "Second in Command". I compared the two side by side and, I'm not exaggerating, they are identical. As far as the other movies go, while not being as solid as their individual, official studio Blu-ray releases, "Universal Soldier: The Return" & "Maximum Risk" do hold-up well as being considered HD, but I would definitely recommend hanging onto the 2 aforementioned titles if you already own them on Blu-ray(as I do). Because the Sony releases of those two are better in terms of video and audio is concerned. "Double Team" is a dirty HD transfer, but is still far superior to the DVD version, and certainly worth the upgrade if you enjoy the movie.
Audio Quality -
Unfortunately, all 5 movies are featured in Dolby Digital 2.0 and don't offer their previous DTS 5.1 audio tracks that they did on their previous Blu-ray releases.
All in all, if you don't already own any of these movies, then it is definitely a must-buy for fans of action flicks and/or Van Damme!
Well, I hope that helps clear some things up for anyone that's interested in this set.

Another great TV from Samsung!

Me and the wife invested in the 40" LED 1080p Samsung several years ago and absolutely fell-in-love with the picture quality on that model, so we figured it would be best to stick with this brand for future TV purchases as well. Now that the time has come to get another TV for the larger bedroom, and saw that this larger 48" LED was on-sale, we opted to grab it with little hesitation... and, once again, Samsung doesn't fail to impress!
The picture quality is stunning, as usual! Of course, the sound is about as typically limited as one would expect on these kinds of TV's. Small speakers in the back never seem to cut it, and I would definitely recommend buying a soundbar or at least hook your Blu-ray/DVD player up to a receiver of some sort, or be prepared to crank the sound up quite a bit to hear things clearly in a larger room.
The only thing that kept me from giving this model a perfect score is the Eco Solution(energy saving option) that causes the picture to constantly dim in and out of brightness to adapt to the room's lighting environment. You can turn the function off in the settings, but I found that it still automatically adjusts brightness regardless of being ON or OFF. So, instead of writing this function off as a defect and going through the hassle of returning the TV back to the store, I went online and found that this is a common issue on the several Samsung models. One forum I came across was insightful enough to help me remedy this from happening, and seems to work now... all I had to do was switch the picture setting to "Movie", and now, no more fluctuation in brightness.
Well, I hope this might help someone else that is running into the same ordeal. All in all, I find this particular model, as well as my previous Samsung to be VERY solid purchases. :)

The ULTIMATE HUNTER EDITION!
on March 26, 2014

Well, I've been collecting Blu-rays for a short time now, and finally got the new Full HD TV set-up, and then starting re-watching some older titles on DVD.... now, I told myself that I wouldn't be making the effort to be re-buying many old titles that I already own, but after seeing a lot of the "classics" again, and in comparison to the new HD format, all I have to say is... yikes! A lot of them suffer badly from transfers that came from a much dirtier and damaged film source. The first "Predator"(one of my all-time faves) on DVD is one that is WAY to sub-par in video quality for my tastes. SO MANY black specks and scratches pop-up, that it's flat-out distracting to watch now by today's standards.
So, I had to make the effort of up-grading this bad-boy on good ol' Blu-Ray... and whatta'ya know, Best Buy has both the 1st and 2nd Predators movies on sale this week (for only $7.99) in a nifty little Double Feature 2-Pack. I did a lot of research to find out what exactly this Collection consists of, and there is a a lot of back-and-forth on what was actually included. There were many reviews stating that the set included the much more superior release of the 1st Predator, the 2010 "Ultimate Hunter Edition" which includes butt-loads of special features and a far better, fully remastered HD transfer, as opposed to the far inferior 2008 Blu-Ray release of the film that really didn't do the masterpiece justice(from what I've heard). But, then there were many other conflicting reviews stating that this set actually contains the cruddy 2008 release... ahhhh, who to believe?! Well, I figured it would be worth it to throw caution to the wind and just buy it at this awesome price, and hope I get the "UHE" version of the 1st film... and, I DID! SWEET!
So, I am here(after putting you all through this painful rant) to confirm that the version that Best Buy is currently selling is the proper 2-Disc Pack, with the much more superior UHE version of "Predator"... and, of course, a great copy of its equally entertaining sequel as well!
While some still confirm that there are copies floating around out there that do still contain the 2008 version, I can say with certainty that the one I bought this week at BB does include the correct version.
What's great about it: The price, TONS of old-school action... and the Ultimate Hunter Edition of "Predator"!!
What's not so great: Not a thing!

Definately a FUN flick! It's all the "RAGE"

Wow, this movie caught me by surprise.
I picked it up mainly 'cuz I'm a sucker for anything with Robert (Freddy Krueger) Englund in it, no matter how low-budget or campy it might be... and this movie is both of those things. But don't get me wrong, I mean that that in a good way. The production looks great for what they were working with. The monster effects are solid and have this kinda cartoony look to them(intentionally). Reminded me of something out of Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive". It shows how good filmmakers can make a movie look great, even without truck-loads of money. It's called dedication and artistry.
And as for the campyness, well, it rings similar to the Horror movies from my childhood that I love, like "Evil Dead 2" or "Monster Squad". It's just, all and all a good- -old-fashioned horror flick with a lot of great humor thrown in for good measure. Solid horror, solid FX, solid acting and it has a great feel to it. It's just plain fun.
The only complaint that I have about this movie, is that it wasn't long enough, but then again, all the good ones never are(or don't seem like it). But at least the ending leaves room for a sequel, so...
If you're looking for some entertainment this Halloween, I'd definitely recommend this movie to anyone who knows, and loves their horror flicks. Because this one's for us.
What's great about it: Not only a solid horror flick, but funny too.
What's not so great: Wasn't long enough. Let's hope there's gonna be a sequel.
