This made-for-TV drama, based on the book by Earl Hamner Jr., was the basis for the popular long-running television series The Waltons. In this opening installment, the Waltons, led by matriarch Olivia Walton (Patricia Neal), spend an anxious 1933 Christmas Eve together as they await the arrival of their father during a snowstorm. The film won the Golden Globe Award for "Best TV-Movie" that year, and Neal won the "Best Actress" award for her performance.
Growing up in the 70's one of the favorite tv shows in our family was the Waltons. This movie was the catalyst for the show. Some of the characters are not the ones that starred in the show (grandpa, mom and dad Walton, Ike Godsey, etc) but the story is a good one, nonetheless, based on a real families struggles during one Christmas during the Depression. Many solid family values are represented. It is a reminder of how many families used to live, where love and respect were the rule instead of the exception.
