Gurgs's Reviews

The long-awaited and much-anticipated next installment of the award-winning The Elder Scrolls franchise is here. Now, the expansive, open world that forever revolutionized the face of the fantasy epic leads you deeper into the combat, the magic and the myth than you've ever been before. This time, you don't just play as a character, you truly become whomever it is you wish to be — and have the freedom to do anything you can possibly imagine. This follow-up to the 2006 Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, offers stunning graphics and a gripping storyline that immerses you in the game from the moment you turn it on. Are you ready to unroll the Scroll and let the journey begin?Imagine rolling clouds, rugged mountains, bustling cities, lush fields and crumbling dungeons. Imagine ancient dragons beholding secrets so powerful they could transform your future. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim immerses you in the engrossing world of the franchise you already know and love with more realism, more choice and more intensity than ever before. Featuring a new game engine that brings every tiny environmental aspect to life in blistering detail and AI that brings you close to your allies — and your enemies — Skyrim blurs the line between your world and that of the game. An all-new character engine opens wider an already vast virtual world, putting every decision, every action and every consequence entirely in your hands as you arm yourself with hundreds of new weapons, abilities and spells. Developed by Bethesda Game Studios, the creators of the 2008 Game of the Year, Fallout 3, this immaculate fifth chapter challenges your skills, immerses your mind and will forever change the way you view gaming. It's time to return. It's time for Skyrim.

This game defines epic.

This is my first review that i have done for a game here, and i think this is the perfect game to review. There are a lot of rpgs on the market and there a lot of rpgs that can be considered top in its class. This game surpasses that. How so......read on......i'll tell you.
When it comes to vast landscapes, hours of adventures, a good story, solid game play, and all around fun, this game offers that fully. The dept of the game is deeper than many games and the only game that can probably get close to being as deep as it is, is its predecessor. You can basically do whatever you want to do. You want to explore different cities and villages, do it. Want to smith your own weapons and sell them to earn some extra gold, go for it. Wanna make armor and enchant it so it can better protect you, enchant away! Want to loot and plunder caves, rob villagers, sleep all day, wake up and go on an epic quest for a dog, HAVE AT YOU! In this game, you can literally do whatever you wish. The only boundaries you have is your on imagination.
The graphics on the game is phenomenal. Not a giant step above oblivion, but still beautiful none the less. The character models are awesome, and they don't all look alike!!! *yay!* The scenery of Skyrim is very impressive, and lets not talk about the water animation, it looks as if you can literally dip your hand in it and take a sip.....well.....hoping a deer didn't relieve itself in it upstream.
The amount of time that you can spend on this game is crazy. There is so much to do in this game that if your new to the Elder Scrolls games, you could get overwhelmed very easily. On the bright side however, they made the interface a lot easier to use now, so if you are new to the series, it will be easy to just pick up and play. The favorites list has to be one of the best new installments in this game that i like. Now, you can select any weapon, armor, or magic spell that you frequently use, and add it to your favorites. To select an item as your favorite, simply click the Y or triangle button and BAM! Now all you have to do is push up on the D pad to select it.
The leveling up system has also changed making it easier for new players to get in and get there feet wet. When selecting new perks, don't just focus on one particular tree, move around to the others and see what they have to offer, and let me tell you, there is a LOT to offer. You can basically be and do whatever you want, there is no 'Warrior' class, or 'Rouge' class, you can be a big, strong meat eatin' guy, that runs around all day casting fire spells and using a dagger, or, a skinny high elf with a gigantic battle axe that eats carrots all day. Its totally up to you.
I can keep going on about this game, but it would be better if i stop talking, and YOU get to playing. Speaking of which, i'm gonna go play now. and to those who are about to game, I SALUTE YOU!
What's great about it: The dept of the game and the over all experience.
What's not so great: could be a little overwhelming if your new to the series.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Very frustrating
By Argolich from Cincinnati, Oh
The story is good, just as in Oblivion and the characters are very well defined but the game play is very frustrating. Even on the easiest setting (novice) combat is ridiculously difficult. I'm at level 15 and get killed by a bear. I move from location to location and get attacked by dragons that just appear...and you can't run away from them and I can't figure out how to defeat them. I get jumped by 3 or 4 bandits and no matter how high my combat skills are I get hit by magic and lose half my health points in one strike. I don't get it. I lowered the difficulty as low as it could go and still at level 15 my warrior is a frustrating embarrassment.
It could be me I grant you, but I thought Oblivion was much more fun. I've saved at a place where you can't proceed any further until you kill a frost dragon. I even have two companions with me. It always attacks my character and ignores the companions even when they repeatedly hit it with arrows and spells. I've tried to get past the dragon using every weapon and spell combo I have and i've died 13 times. I'm nearing the point where the frustration is sapping any joy out of the game. Leveling up does next to nothing to improve your abilities.
The dragon I get. But running into one every 30 minutes out in the world is a serious pain when you can't escape them or kill them. Getting attacked by a bear and getting killed 3 or 4 times before you get a lucky critical hit on it just ain't all that much fun after 30 minutes. Maybe others are having an easier time of it than I am but I'm losing patience. My sword hits do pathetic damage even when I use a power attack. My stamina is massive yet I run out of steam after 3 or 4 swings and can't even run away. I don't remember Oblivion being this way. I'm probably one of the few reviewers who is somewhat disappointed by Skyrim. Its difficult to enjoy the great story when it is frequently interrupted by stupid and unavoidable deaths and be forewarned...the game has many, many load points and the load times are ponderous. There are places where you have to load to go into a building and then suffer another load if you go into some of the interior rooms. Ponderous.

wow....

wow man, im sorry for your experience in the game. I had a friend that defeated at least 3 dragons before lvl 15, and also defeated there first at lvl 6. Myself, i have defeated multiple dragons so far, im lvl 22. Do you have good armor, any enchanted armor? How is your defense? Do you use light or heavy armor? Try adding perks to your armor, it can reduce damage starting off by 20%. Also, make sure you lvl up your swordmanship as well. You dont really have to take companions with you, and actually, in some cases, i would say not to. You will be too worried about trying to keep them alive than trying to defeat your enemy. Work on your healing as well and carry multiple potions, add poison to your blade. I normally defeat my dragons by using a bow and arrow, normally with the bow being enchanted and using poisons. Try these tips out and see if it helps, the combat is actually similar to that of Oblivion, however, its actually better on Skyrim. Good luck man, and don't give up the fight :)
